Dosage and Administration: This medicine is for external ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Frequently asked questions
AZITHRAL Eye Ointment 5 GM, containing azithromycin, is an antibiotic medication primarily used for treating various bacterial eye infections.
What is AZITHRAL Eye Ointment used for?
AZITHRAL Eye Ointment is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), trachoma conjunctivitis, and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids). It is effective against specific bacteria like Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mitis group, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. This medicine is not effective against viral eye infections.
How does AZITHRAL Eye Ointment work?
AZITHRAL Eye Ointment contains azithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the protein synthesis essential for the growth and multiplication of bacteria. This action either kills the bacteria or stops them from reproducing, thereby clearing the infection.
What is the usual dosage for AZITHRAL Eye Ointment?
The typical dosage involves applying one drop to the affected eye(s) twice a day (approximately 8 to 12 hours apart) for the first two days. Subsequently, the dosage is usually reduced to one drop in the affected eye(s) once a day for the next five days. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions for dosage and duration.
What are the possible side effects of AZITHRAL Eye Ointment?
Common side effects may include a temporary burning or stinging sensation, redness (conjunctival hyperemia), eye irritation or discomfort, itching in the eyes, and temporary blurred vision immediately after application. These usually resolve gradually. More serious, but rare, side effects can include severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of the face/tongue/throat, severe dizziness, trouble breathing), vision changes, eye pain, or signs of new eye infections (including fungal infections). If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Is AZITHRAL Eye Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
For pregnancy, AZITHRAL Eye Ointment should be used with caution and only if clearly necessary, as determined by your doctor. It is classified as FDA pregnancy category B, meaning animal studies have not shown fetal risk, but controlled human studies are lacking. When breastfeeding, azithromycin is excreted into human milk in low levels, and adverse effects on the infant are not expected due to the low systemic availability from eye drops. However, it's always best to consult your doctor before using this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can AZITHRAL Eye Ointment be taken with other medications?
There are no noted significant drug interactions between azithromycin ophthalmic ointment and other medications. However, it is important to inform your healthcare provider about all prescription, over-the-counter, herbal, and supplement products you are using. Do not use other eye products without first consulting your doctor.
What precautions should be taken while using AZITHRAL Eye Ointment?
This ointment is for ophthalmic (eye) use only; it should not be injected or swallowed. Avoid touching the tip of the ointment tube to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. It is crucial to complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent bacterial resistance. You should avoid wearing contact lenses while you have an eye infection and during treatment. If you experience temporary blurred vision after applying the ointment, wait until your vision returns to normal before driving or operating machinery. Inform your doctor if you have any known allergies to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
What happens if a dose of AZITHRAL Eye Ointment is missed?
If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should AZITHRAL Eye Ointment be stored?
Store unopened AZITHRAL Eye Ointment in the refrigerator, typically between 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). Once opened, the ointment can usually be stored at room temperature (between 2°C to 25°C or below 30°C) or in the refrigerator for up to 14 days, after which any unused portion should be discarded. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of sight and reach of children, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Do not freeze the ointment.
