DUPHALAC RAPID 275ML

DUPHALAC RAPID is a laxative primarily used to manage constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Manufactured by ABBOTT INDIA LTD-OPTIMA DIV, this medicine is available as an oral solution.

  • Name:

    • Brand Name: DUPHALAC RAPID
    • Common Name: Lactulose Oral Solution
  • Composition:

    • The active ingredient is Lactulose (200mg or 3.335 g/5ml, depending on formulation). It may also contain small amounts of milk sugars like lactose, galactose, epilactose, or fructose as residues from its production process.
  • Uses: DUPHALAC RAPID is prescribed for:

    • Constipation: It works by drawing water into the bowel, softening stools, and making them easier to pass, thereby normalizing bowel movements. It also promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.
    • Hepatic Encephalopathy (HE): This medication helps lower ammonia levels in the blood, which is crucial for improving brain function in patients with liver disease and preventing hepatic coma.
  • Dosage and Administration: DUPHALAC RAPID can be taken diluted or undiluted. It is recommended to swallow the dose quickly without holding it in the mouth for an extended period.

    • For Constipation:
      • Adults and Adolescents: Initial doses typically range from 15 to 45 mL daily, which can be adjusted to a maintenance dose of 15 to 30 mL daily. It may take 1-2 days for the full effect to be observed.
    • For Hepatic Encephalopathy (Adults Only):
      • The usual dosage is 30 to 45 mL, three to four times daily. Doses may be adjusted to achieve two or three soft stools per day. In acute episodes, hourly doses of 30 to 45 mL or up to 50 mL every 1-2 hours may be given until two loose bowel actions occur.
    • It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids (1.5-2 liters, or 6-8 glasses) daily while on this medication.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Diarrhea (especially with high doses), flatulence (wind), abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Flatulence typically subsides after a few days.
    • Serious (less common): Electrolyte imbalance (such as hypokalaemia and hypernatraemia) due to excessive dosage or diarrhea.
  • Precautions:

    • Inform your doctor if you have galactosaemia (galactose indigestion disorder), galactose or fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, Lapp lactase deficiency, intestinal blockage, or digestive perforation.
    • Use with caution in patients with diabetes, as it contains sugars that can affect blood glucose levels.
    • Consult a doctor if symptoms worsen or do not improve after several days.
    • Chronic misuse or unadjusted high doses can lead to diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance.
    • Children, infants, and babies should use Duphalac under medical supervision.
    • Consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Storage:

    • Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
    • Keep out of sight and reach of children.
    • Store between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.
Frequently asked questions

DUPHALAC RAPID 275ML is an oral solution containing lactulose, primarily used as a laxative. It is manufactured by ABBOTT INDIA LTD - OPTIMA DIV.

What is DUPHALAC RAPID used for?

DUPHALAC RAPID is used to treat chronic constipation, making stools softer and easier to pass. It is also used to manage hepatic encephalopathy, a severe liver disease that can affect brain function, by lowering ammonia levels in the blood. Additionally, it may be used to provide softer stools where medically beneficial, such as with hemorrhoids or after anal surgery.

How does DUPHALAC RAPID work?

DUPHALAC RAPID contains lactulose, a synthetic sugar that acts as an osmotic laxative. It works by drawing water into the bowel, which softens the stool and increases its bulk, promoting normal bowel movements. In cases of hepatic encephalopathy, lactulose helps reduce ammonia levels in the blood by drawing ammonia from the blood into the colon, facilitating its removal from the body. It also promotes the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

What is the usual dosage?

For chronic constipation in adults, the usual starting dose is 15 to 45 mL daily, with a maintenance dose of 15 to 30 mL daily. For hepatic encephalopathy in adults, the usual dosage is 30 to 45 mL three to four times daily, adjusted to produce two or three soft stools per day. For children, the dosage varies by age and should be given under medical supervision. It may take 1-2 days for the medication to work fully.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects include bloating, increased wind (flatulence), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. These effects are typically mild and often subside after a few days. At high doses, diarrhea may occur. Rarely, serious side effects like severe diarrhea and electrolyte imbalance can happen, especially with chronic use of unadjusted dosages. If persistent or severe side effects occur, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DUPHALAC RAPID can be used during pregnancy, as studies have shown it to be effective for constipation associated with pregnancy. For breastfeeding women, no effects on the breastfed infant are anticipated as systemic exposure to lactulose is negligible. However, it is always advisable to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor or pharmacist.

Can it be taken with other medications?

There have been conflicting reports regarding the concomitant use of lactulose with certain antibiotics, such as neomycin, which may interfere with lactulose's effectiveness. It is generally recommended to take DUPHALAC at least 2 hours after other medicines, as it may interfere with their absorption. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter products, before starting DUPHALAC RAPID.

What precautions should be taken?

Do not take DUPHALAC RAPID if you are allergic to lactulose or any other ingredients, have galactosaemia, gastrointestinal obstruction, or a risk of digestive perforation. Patients with diabetes should use it with caution, especially at high doses for hepatic encephalopathy, as it contains sugars that can affect blood glucose levels. If you have unexplained abdominal pain, lactose intolerance, or are prone to electrolyte disorders, consult your doctor. During treatment, it is important to drink plenty of fluids (around 1.5 to 2 liters per day).

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one, as this may increase the chance of unwanted side effects.

How should it be stored?

DUPHALAC RAPID should be stored in a cool place, preferably below 25°C. Do not store it in the refrigerator or freezer. Keep the medicine in a closed container, away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and out of reach of children.
