LOTEGATE EYE DROP 5ML

Lotegate Eye Drop is a combination medication used to treat bacterial eye infections and associated inflammation. It is manufactured by Ajanta Pharma Ltd.

Composition

Lotegate Eye Drop contains a combination of three active ingredients:

  • Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5% w/w): A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by suppressing the inflammatory response and blocking the production of chemical messengers like prostaglandins that cause redness, swelling, and itching in the eye.
  • Gatifloxacin (0.3% w/w or 3mg): A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, thereby killing bacteria and preventing their growth.
  • Benzalkonium Chloride (0.01%): A preservative that helps prevent microbial contamination of the eye drop solution.

Uses

Lotegate Eye Drop is primarily prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Management of steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions where there is a bacterial eye infection or a risk of one.
  • Treatment of bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye).
  • Inflammation of the eye's outer layer (conjunctivitis) and swelling and irritation of the eyelid edges (blepharitis).
  • Prophylaxis or treatment of ocular bacterial infections and inflammation following eye surgery.
  • Relief from symptoms like pain, swelling, redness, itching, or irritation in the eyes caused by bacterial infections.

Dosage and Administration

Lotegate Eye Drop is for external ophthalmic use only.

  • Administer the prescribed amount of drops as advised by your doctor.
  • Wash hands thoroughly before and after use.
  • Tilt your head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and instil the drops.
  • Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes to allow the medication to spread evenly.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface, including the eye, eyelids, or surrounding areas, to prevent contamination.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to avoid dilution.
  • If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Shake well before each use.
  • It is often recommended to apply 2-3 times a day for at least a week or as prescribed by the doctor. Do not stop use without consulting your doctor to prevent re-infection.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about Lotegate Eye Drop 5ML:

What is Lotegate Eye Drop used for?

Lotegate Eye Drop is primarily used to treat bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye). It also helps manage steroid-responsive inflammatory eye conditions and reduces inflammation following eye surgery. Additionally, it can serve as a proactive measure against potential bacterial infections in the eye.

How does Lotegate Eye Drop work?

Lotegate Eye Drop is a combination medication containing Gatifloxacin and Loteprednol. Gatifloxacin is an antibiotic that works by stopping the growth and multiplication of bacteria by inhibiting essential enzymes. Loteprednol is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, redness, swelling, and itching by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers called prostaglandins in the eye.

What is the usual dosage of Lotegate Eye Drop?

The exact dosage and duration should be determined by your doctor based on your specific condition. Lotegate Eye Drop is for external use only, applied to the affected eye. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions carefully regarding the number of drops and frequency.

What are the possible side effects of Lotegate Eye Drop?

Common side effects may include eye irritation, stinging or burning sensation, temporary blurred vision, eye dryness, watery eyes, headache, and redness in the eye. These symptoms usually resolve as your body adjusts to the medication. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor. Prolonged use can potentially lead to increased eye pressure (glaucoma) or cataracts.

Is Lotegate Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Lotegate Eye Drop is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to a lack of sufficient safety data. Animal studies have shown potential adverse effects with loteprednol. It is crucial to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, as they will weigh the potential benefits against the risks.

Can Lotegate Eye Drop be taken with other medications?

Avoid administering other eye medications in the same eye simultaneously. It is recommended to wait at least 5-10 minutes between applying different eye drops to prevent dilution. Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including ophthalmic medications containing silver, as they may cause a precipitate. Oral corticosteroids may increase the risk of side effects like glaucoma and cataracts when used concurrently with Lotegate Eye Drop.

What precautions should be taken while using Lotegate Eye Drop?

To prevent contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before instilling the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience temporary blurred vision after use. It is important to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve. Lotegate Eye Drop is generally not recommended for children under 18 years of age due to insufficient safety data. Inform your doctor if you have a history of eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, or viral/fungal eye infections, or if you are allergic to any components of the medicine.

What happens if a dose of Lotegate Eye Drop is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Lotegate Eye Drop be stored?

Lotegate Eye Drop should be stored below 30°C, protected from heat and direct light. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and out of reach of children and pets. After opening the bottle, use the medicine within one month.
