Description

NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROP 10 ML by CIPLA LTD.

Name

Brand Name: NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROP Common Name: Norfloxacin Eye/Ear Drops

Composition

NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROP contains Norfloxacin 0.3% w/v as the active ingredient. Norfloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Uses

NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROP is an antibiotic primarily used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes and ears. It is effective in managing conditions such as:

  • Superficial eye infections, including acute bacterial conjunctivitis.
  • Eyelid inflammation (blepharitis).
  • Acute otitis externa (outer ear infection).
  • Chronic suppurative otitis media (a persistent ear infection). It works by inhibiting the growth of the bacteria causing the infection by preventing their DNA from dividing and repairing.

Dosage and Administration

NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROP is for external use only and should be used in the dose and duration advised by a doctor.

  • For Eye Instillation: Tilt the head back slightly, pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Hold the dropper close to the eye without touching it, and gently squeeze to place 1 or 2 drops as needed into the lower eyelid.
  • For Ear Instillation: Clean and dry the ear canal. Lie down with the affected ear facing upward and instill the prescribed number of drops into the ear (e.g., 4 drops). Remain in this position for about a minute to allow penetration.

Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface or the eye/ear to prevent contamination. Do not skip any doses and complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection and prevent recurrence. Wait at least 5-10 minutes before administering another medication in the same eye/ear.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Application site irritation or burning sensation.
  • Eye discomfort, stinging, itching, redness.
  • Temporary blurred vision upon initial use.
  • Headache, nausea, abdominal cramp.

Serious side effects are uncommon but can include rash, itchy skin, swelling of the face and mouth, difficulty in breathing, pain in tendons, numbness, or tingling sensations.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to Norfloxacin or other quinolones.
  • Contact Lenses: Avoid wearing contact lenses until the infection clears up. Wait at least 15 minutes after application before re-inserting contact lenses, unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and the medicine is likely unsafe during breastfeeding.
  • Driving and Machinery: Use caution, as it may cause temporary blurred vision, dizziness, or sleepiness.
  • Underlying Conditions: Exercise caution in patients with a history of kidney impairment, Central Nervous System (CNS) disorders (which may increase seizure risk), or myasthenia gravis.
  • Interactions: Inform your doctor about any other medications being used, especially those metabolized by CYP1A2 (e.g., theophylline, caffeine) or CYP3A4 (e.g., cyclosporine), and corticosteroids (due to potential tendon disorder risk).
  • Contraindications: Not effective for viral or fungal eye/ear infections.
  • Expiry: Discard the bottle four weeks after opening.

Storage

Keep NORFLOX EYE/EAR DROPS 10 ML in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Store at room temperature (below 30°C or between 10°C to 25°C). Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

What is Norflox Eye/Ear Drop used for?

Norflox Eye/Ear Drop is primarily used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes and ears. This includes conditions such as acute bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), blepharitis (eyelid inflammation), acute otitis externa (outer ear infection), and chronic suppurative otitis media (a persistent ear infection). It also helps to reduce inflammation, swelling, and discomfort associated with these infections.

How does Norflox Eye/Ear Drop work?

Norflox Eye/Ear Drop contains Norfloxacin, an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class. Norfloxacin works by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a crucial bacterial enzyme involved in the replication, repair, and transcription of bacterial DNA. By disrupting these processes, Norfloxacin effectively stops bacterial DNA synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria causing the infection.

What is the usual dosage of Norflox Eye/Ear Drop?

The precise dosage and duration of treatment should always be determined by your doctor based on your specific condition. For eye instillation, typically 1 or 2 drops are squeezed into the affected eye. For ear instillation, after cleaning the ear canal, usually 4 drops are instilled into the affected ear, and you should remain in that position for about a minute.

What are the possible side effects of Norflox Eye/Ear Drop?

Common side effects can include local irritation, discomfort, a burning or stinging sensation in the eyes or ears, temporary blurred vision, redness, eyelid itching, swelling, or crusting. Less common side effects may include headache, nausea, abdominal cramp, and dizziness. Most side effects are temporary and resolve on their own, but if they persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor.

Is Norflox Eye/Ear Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Caution is advised when using Norflox Eye/Ear Drop during pregnancy. Limited human studies are available, and animal studies have shown potential harmful effects on the developing baby. It should generally only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the fetus, and under strict medical guidance. Breastfeeding: Norflox Eye/Ear Drop is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding as norfloxacin is excreted in breast milk. Some experts suggest monitoring the infant for gastrointestinal effects, while others advise against its use or recommend discontinuing breastfeeding. Always consult your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

Can Norflox Eye/Ear Drop be taken with other medications?

Since Norflox Eye/Ear Drop is applied topically to the eyes or ears, it is less likely to interact significantly with other systemic medications. However, it's always important to inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including prescribed, over-the-counter, herbal, and dietary supplements, to prevent any potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using Norflox Eye/Ear Drop?

To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including your eye or ear. You should complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is completely cured and to prevent recurrence. If you experience temporary blurred vision, avoid driving or operating machinery. If you wear contact lenses, it's advisable not to wear them until your infection clears up, and wait at least 15 minutes after applying the drops before reinserting them, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Norflox Eye/Ear Drop is effective only against bacterial infections and will not work for viral or fungal infections.

What happens if a dose of Norflox Eye/Ear Drop is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Norflox Eye/Ear Drop be stored?

Norflox Eye/Ear Drop should be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. It is important to discard the bottle four weeks after opening, as using expired or contaminated medication may not effectively treat the infection.
