SMUTH SUSP (Aristo-MF 2 Div)

Name

Common Name: Smuth Suspension, Smuth Oral Suspension Mint Sugar Free, Smuth Oral Suspension Delicious Pineapple Sugar Free. Brand Name: SMUTH SUSP by ARISTO-MF 2 DIV. The manufacturer is Aristo Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.

Composition

Each 5ml of Smuth Suspension contains:

  • Liquid Paraffin IP: 1.25 ml
  • Magnesium Hydroxide IP (Milk of Magnesia): 300 mg
  • Sodium Picosulfate BP: 3.33 mg

Uses

Smuth Suspension is primarily used to treat constipation by softening stools and promoting bowel movements. It is beneficial for constipation associated with various conditions such as piles, anal fissures, hernias, and cardiovascular disorders. It can also be used for bowel clearance before procedures like endoscopy and radioscopic examinations, and for pre/post-operative constipation. This medication also aids in relieving discomfort from irregular bowel movements and hard, dry stools. Some formulations may also help relieve sour stomach and heartburn.

Dosage and Administration

Take Smuth Suspension as advised by your physician. Shake the bottle well before each use. It can be taken with or without food, but it is best taken at a fixed time daily for consistency. The dose and duration will depend on your condition and response to the medication. It is crucial to maintain adequate hydration (at least 6-8 glasses of fluid) while using this suspension.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. Other potential side effects include abdominal discomfort, muscle weakness, dry mouth, extreme thirst, rectal bleeding, dizziness, and gastrointestinal disturbances. These effects are usually temporary; however, consult a doctor if they persist or worsen.

Precautions

Do not take Smuth Suspension if you are allergic to any of its components, or if you have acute abdominal surgery, intestinal obstruction, or undiagnosed abdominal pain. Prolonged use beyond 7 days is not recommended without medical supervision, as it may lead to dependency for bowel movements. It is not recommended for children without a doctor's guidance. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately if allergic reactions like skin rash, swelling, or itching occur. Report any sudden and persistent changes in bowel habits lasting over two weeks to your doctor.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. The ideal storage temperature is between 10ºC to 30ºC (or below 30ºC). Keep the medicine in a tightly closed container to protect it from air and moisture. Ensure it is kept out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

SMUTH SUSP by ARISTO-MF 2 DIV is a laxative medication used to treat constipation and related conditions. It is a combination of three active ingredients: Liquid Paraffin, Magnesium Hydroxide, and Sodium Picosulphate.

What is SMUTH SUSP used for?

SMUTH SUSP is primarily used for the short-term management of constipation. It is often prescribed for constipation associated with conditions like piles, anal fissures, hernias, cardiovascular disorders, or for bowel clearance before medical procedures such as endoscopy or radioscopy. It can also be beneficial for elderly and bedridden patients who struggle with regular bowel movements.

How does SMUTH SUSP work?

SMUTH SUSP works through the combined action of its three active ingredients. Sodium picosulphate is a stimulant laxative that prevents water absorption in the colon and stimulates its propulsive activity, leading to water accumulation and easier stool passage. Magnesium hydroxide acts as an osmotic laxative, drawing water into the intestines to soften stools and increase their volume. Liquid paraffin lubricates the bowels and softens the stools, further aiding in their smooth evacuation. This synergistic action helps to relieve constipation and reduce discomfort.

What is the usual dosage for SMUTH SUSP?

The dosage of SMUTH SUSP should always be as advised by your doctor. It depends on your age, body weight, and the specific medical condition being treated. It is crucial to follow your doctor's recommended dosage and duration to achieve optimal results and avoid dependency. Measure the advised dose using a measuring cup, as regular household spoons may not measure accurately.

What are the possible side effects of SMUTH SUSP?

Common side effects of SMUTH SUSP may include diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, and headache. Most of these side effects are temporary and usually resolve over time. However, if any side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is SMUTH SUSP safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

SMUTH SUSP should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There are no sufficient and well-controlled studies on its use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor before taking this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding; your doctor will determine if the benefits outweigh the risks.

Can SMUTH SUSP be taken with other medications?

SMUTH SUSP can interact with certain medications. For example, it may reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics like tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones by hindering their absorption. It can also interact with heart medications like digoxin and corticosteroids, potentially leading to electrolyte imbalances. Additionally, concurrent use with antacids containing aluminum or calcium may affect the absorption of both medicines. It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications, including prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines, that you are taking to avoid potential interactions. It's also advised to take SMUTH SUSP at least 2 hours after other medicines, as it may interfere with their absorption.

What precautions should be taken when using SMUTH SUSP?

Do not use SMUTH SUSP for more than 7 days unless advised by a doctor, as it might lead to dependency. Avoid taking it if you have severe dehydration, intestinal obstruction, undiagnosed abdominal pain, or a severe kidney or gastrointestinal condition. It is not recommended for children as its safety and effectiveness have not been established. Drink plenty of fluids (at least 6-8 glasses) while taking this suspension. If you notice any sudden changes in bowel habits that persist for over 2 weeks, consult your doctor.

What happens if a dose of SMUTH SUSP is missed?

If you miss a dose of SMUTH SUSP, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should SMUTH SUSP be stored?

SMUTH SUSP should be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally between 15-30°C, away from direct sunlight. Keep it in a tightly closed container to protect it from air and moisture. Ensure it is kept out of sight and reach of children. Always check the expiry date and do not use the medicine beyond it.
