DEBRIFREE OINT

DEBRIFREE OINTMENT is a topical medication manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd..

  • Composition DEBRIFREE OINTMENT contains Papain (52170.00 UNT or 521700U) and Urea (100.00 mg or 100mg) as its active ingredients. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme that helps break down and remove dead or damaged tissue, while Urea acts as a keratolytic agent to soften and hydrate the skin by increasing its water content. Together, they facilitate the removal of necrotic tissue, improve skin moisture, and dissolve keratin. The ointment also contains Methyl Paraben and Propyl Paraben as preservatives.

  • Uses DEBRIFREE OINTMENT is primarily used for wound healing and the debridement (removal) of dead skin and necrotic tissue. It is effective in promoting natural healing for various types of wounds, including pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous leg ulcers. Additionally, it is used for conditions such as dry, rough, or scaly skin, improving skin texture and appearance, and treating calluses and corns.

  • Dosage and Administration Apply a thin layer of DEBRIFREE OINTMENT to the affected area as directed by a healthcare provider, typically once or twice daily. Gently massage until absorbed. Before application, cleanse and dry the affected area, preferably with saline or a mild wound-cleansing solution. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application, unless the treatment is for the hands.

  • Side Effects Common side effects may include application site reactions such as redness, skin irritation, a burning sensation, itching, or excessive dryness. These are usually mild and temporary. If symptoms persist or worsen, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider. Allergic reactions are rare but possible, indicated by rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.

  • Precautions

    • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or open wounds, cuts, and infected skin. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
    • Consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
    • Use with caution in individuals with sensitive skin; a patch test is recommended before widespread application.
    • Avoid using hydrogen peroxide to clean wounds before application, as it may inactivate papain.
    • DEBRIFREE OINTMENT may increase skin sensitivity to the sun; use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors.
    • Not recommended for children under two years of age, and use in older children should be under medical guidance.
    • Individuals with liver or kidney disease or poor blood circulation should consult a doctor before use.
  • Storage Store DEBRIFREE OINTMENT at room temperature (20-25°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is Debrifree Ointment used for?

Debrifree Ointment is primarily used to remove dead or damaged skin and tissues (a process known as debridement) and promote wound healing. It is effective for various types of wounds, including ulcers, cysts, bedsores, surgical wounds, and burn wounds. By clearing the affected area, it helps prevent infections and supports the regeneration of healthy skin and tissues.

How does Debrifree Ointment work?

Debrifree Ointment contains two active ingredients: Papain and Urea. Papain is a proteolytic enzyme that breaks down and digests non-viable (dead) protein matter without harming healthy tissue. Urea acts as a keratolytic agent, increasing moisture in the skin, softening it, and helping to denature the non-viable tissue, making it more susceptible to digestion by papain. This combined action facilitates the shedding of dead skin cells and accelerates the healing process. It also has an emollient effect, which helps soften the skin.

What is the usual dosage and application?

It is typically advised to apply Debrifree Ointment 1 to 2 times daily, or as directed by your healthcare provider. Before application, the affected area should be cleaned with saline or another mild wound-cleansing solution recommended by your doctor. Apply a generous amount of the ointment to create a thin, even layer, approximately 1/8-inch thick, covering the affected skin. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after applying the ointment, unless the treatment is for your hands.

What are the possible side effects of Debrifree Ointment?

Common side effects associated with Debrifree Ointment include a burning sensation, itching, irritation, and redness at the application site. These reactions are usually mild and temporary. If these side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience signs of a severe allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately.

Is Debrifree Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Debrifree Ointment contains urea, which is categorized as a Category C pregnancy drug. It should be used with caution during pregnancy and only if your doctor determines that the potential benefits outweigh the possible risks to the unborn baby. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant.

Breastfeeding: It is not known whether Debrifree Ointment passes into breast milk. Therefore, it should be used with caution in breastfeeding mothers and only if the doctor believes the benefits justify the potential risks. Always consult your healthcare provider for guidance if you are breastfeeding.

Can Debrifree Ointment be taken with other medications?

There are no known significant general drug-drug interactions with Debrifree Ointment. However, certain substances can affect its efficacy. You should avoid using hydrogen peroxide solution for wound cleansing before applying Debrifree Ointment, as it may inactivate the papain. Similarly, contact with topical medications containing heavy metal salts like lead, silver, and mercury should be avoided as they can inactivate papain. Urea, one of the components, may enhance the absorption and efficacy of other topical formulations like 5-fluorouracil, dithranol, and corticosteroids. It's best to avoid using other skin creams on the treated area without consulting your doctor; if other creams are prescribed, maintain an interval of at least 30 minutes between applications.

What precautions should be taken while using Debrifree Ointment?

Debrifree Ointment is for external (topical) use only. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals; if accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not apply the ointment to open cuts, existing infections, or sores unless specifically directed by your doctor. This ointment may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so it is recommended to use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors, and avoid tanning beds or sunlamps. Inform your doctor if you have underlying medical conditions such as liver or kidney disease or poor blood circulation. It is not recommended for children under two years of age, and for children above two, it should be used under medical supervision only if the benefits outweigh the risks. If skin irritation persists or worsens, stop using the ointment and inform your doctor.

What happens if a dose of Debrifree Ointment is missed?

If you miss a dose of Debrifree Ointment, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular application schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Debrifree Ointment be stored?

Debrifree Ointment should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20-25°C. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. It should also be protected from direct sunlight and moisture.
