Description
LOOZ PEG (ORANGE FLAVOUR) SOLUTION 200 ML
LOOZ PEG (ORANGE FLAVOUR) SOLUTION 200 ML, manufactured by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is an oral solution used to relieve constipation and prepare the intestines for medical procedures.
Composition The active ingredients include Polyethylene Glycol 3350, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, and Potassium Chloride. These salts work together to increase the water content in the intestine and stimulate bowel movement.
Uses LOOZ PEG is primarily used for the treatment of chronic constipation and for the resolution of faecal impaction. It also serves as an intestinal preparation before diagnostic procedures like colonoscopy or barium enema, or prior to surgical procedures.
Dosage and Administration This solution must be diluted with water before use.
- For Constipation (Adults, Adolescents, and Elderly): 25 ml of solution diluted in 100 ml of water, taken 1 to 3 times daily, adjusted according to individual response. A course of treatment for constipation should not normally exceed two weeks.
- For Faecal Impaction (Adults, Adolescents, and Elderly): 4 x 25 ml doses, each diluted in 100 ml of water, taken twice daily. Treatment for faecal impaction does not normally exceed three days. Doses for faecal impaction should be divided so no more than two doses are taken in any one hour.
- Children (2-6 years): Usual starting daily dose is 12.5 ml solution diluted in 50 ml of water.
- Children (7-11 years): Usual starting daily dose is 25 ml solution diluted in 100 ml of water. The dose for children should be adjusted to produce regular soft stools, with increases made every second day if needed.
Side Effects Common side effects may include stomach pain/cramps, nausea, diarrhoea, and abdominal discomfort or bloating. Most of these effects are usually mild and may subside over time.
Precautions
- Consult a doctor if symptoms persist after three days or if taking for more than 7 days.
- Contraindicated in cases of intestinal perforation or obstruction, ileus, or severe inflammatory bowel conditions like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease.
- Caution is advised in patients with impaired cardiovascular function or electrolyte abnormalities.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Can be used, as systemic exposure to PEG 3350 is negligible, but consulting a doctor is recommended.
- May transiently reduce the absorption of other medicinal products due to increased gastro-intestinal transit rate. Take at least 2 hours after other medicines.
Storage Store at a temperature not exceeding 30°C in a cool and dry place. Do not refrigerate or freeze. The diluted solution should be kept covered, and any unused solution should be discarded within 24 hours. Keep out of the reach of children. Discard the product 30 days after first opening.
Frequently asked questions
LOOZ PEG (Orange Flavour) Solution by Intas Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is an oral solution primarily used as a laxative. It contains Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 3350, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, and Potassium Chloride.
Here are some frequently asked questions about LOOZ PEG Solution:
What is LOOZ PEG Solution used for?
LOOZ PEG Solution is primarily used for the treatment of chronic constipation and faecal impaction. It is also used to cleanse the colon (bowel) before medical procedures such as colonoscopy or barium enema.
How does LOOZ PEG Solution work?
LOOZ PEG Solution works as an osmotic laxative. Its main ingredient, Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 3350, draws water into the intestines. This increases the water content and volume of the stool, making it softer and easier to pass, thereby promoting bowel movements. The electrolytes present (Sodium Chloride, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, and Potassium Chloride) help maintain the body's fluid and electrolyte balance.
What is the usual dosage of LOOZ PEG Solution?
LOOZ PEG Solution must always be diluted with water before use and should not be taken undiluted.
- For chronic constipation (Adults, adolescents, and the elderly): The usual dose is 25 ml of solution diluted in 100 ml of water, taken 1 to 3 times daily, adjusted according to individual response. A typical course of treatment should not exceed 2 weeks, though it can be repeated if necessary. For extended use, the dose can be adjusted to 1 or 2 doses per day.
- For faecal impaction (Adults, adolescents, and the elderly): The recommended dose is 4 x 25 ml doses, with each 25 ml dose diluted in 100 ml of water, taken twice daily. A course of treatment for faecal impaction typically does not exceed 3 days.
- Children aged 2 to 6 years: The usual starting daily dose is 12.5 ml solution diluted in 50 ml of water.
- Children aged 7 to 11 years: The usual starting daily dose is 25 ml solution diluted in 100 ml of water. The dose for children should be adjusted to achieve regular soft stools, and if an increase is needed, it can be done every second day.
What are the possible side effects of LOOZ PEG Solution?
Common side effects include stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort or cramps, bloating, and excessive gas. To minimize these effects and prevent dehydration, it's important to drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication. Rarely, more severe effects like severe or bloody diarrhea, rectal bleeding, or worsening abdominal pain can occur, in which case medical attention should be sought immediately.
Is LOOZ PEG Solution safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy: While there is limited data in humans, animal studies have shown indirect reproductive toxicity. However, clinically, no adverse effects are anticipated during pregnancy as systemic exposure to PEG 3350 is negligible. It can be used during pregnancy, but it's advisable to consult your doctor, who will weigh the benefits against any potential risks. During breastfeeding: As systemic exposure to PEG 3350 in breastfeeding women is negligible, no effects on the breastfed infant are anticipated. LOOZ PEG Solution can be used while breastfeeding, but always consult your doctor first.
Can LOOZ PEG Solution be taken with other medications?
LOOZ PEG Solution may transiently reduce the absorption of other medications due to an increased rate of gastrointestinal transit. There have been isolated reports of decreased efficacy with some concomitantly administered medicines, such as anti-epileptics. To avoid potential interactions, it is generally recommended to take LOOZ PEG Solution at least 2 hours after other medicines. You should avoid taking other laxatives without consulting your doctor.
What precautions should be taken while using LOOZ PEG Solution?
Always dilute LOOZ PEG Solution with water as instructed and do not take it undiluted. Ensure adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration. Prolonged use of this medicine is generally not recommended, typically not exceeding 2 weeks for constipation or 3 days for faecal impaction, as it may lead to dependence. Inform your doctor if you have a history of gastrointestinal obstruction, bowel perforation, gastric retention, or inflammatory bowel disease (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease). Use with caution if you have electrolyte abnormalities, kidney disease, or are on a controlled sodium diet. If you have diabetes or lactose intolerance, inform your doctor; long-term use may require periodic blood tests to monitor mineral levels.
What happens if a dose of LOOZ PEG Solution is missed?
If you miss a dose of LOOZ PEG Solution, simply skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should LOOZ PEG Solution be stored?
Store LOOZ PEG Solution at a temperature not exceeding 30°C. It should not be refrigerated or frozen. Keep the medicine out of the reach of children. Once opened, the product should be discarded after 30 days. Any diluted solution that is not used within a 24-hour period should be thrown away.
