FINTOP CREAM by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals

FINTOP CREAM, manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is a topical antifungal medication primarily used for treating various fungal infections of the skin. It is also sometimes referred to as Fintop AF Cream.

Composition The active ingredient in FINTOP CREAM is Butenafine Hydrochloride 1% w/w. Butenafine is a synthetic antifungal agent belonging to the benzylamine class. It works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, specifically by disrupting the synthesis of ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, leading to the death of the fungus.

Uses FINTOP CREAM is prescribed for the topical treatment of superficial dermatophytosis, including:

  • Athlete's Foot (Tinea Pedis): Effective in relieving itching, burning, and scaling between the toes.
  • Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris): Helps manage fungal infections in the groin area, reducing redness and irritation.
  • Ringworm (Tinea Corporis): Treats ring-shaped fungal infections on the body, promoting skin healing and symptom relief. It may also be used for Tinea Versicolor.

Dosage and Administration FINTOP CREAM is for external use only. It is typically applied once daily. The affected area should be thoroughly washed and dried before application. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected skin and the surrounding area, gently rubbing it in. The duration of treatment varies depending on the condition; for example, it may be 2 weeks for tinea corporis or tinea cruris, and up to 4 weeks for interdigital tinea pedis. Continue using the cream for the entire recommended period, even if symptoms improve. Do not cover the treated area with tight clothing or a bandage unless advised by a doctor.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Contact dermatitis (skin rash)
  • Erythema (skin redness)
  • Irritation
  • Itching
  • Burning or stinging sensation at the application site
  • Dry skin or peeling Most of these side effects are usually temporary and fade away over time.

Precautions

  • FINTOP CREAM is not for ophthalmic, oral, or intravaginal use. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes; rinse with plenty of water if accidental contact occurs.
  • Do not use if allergic to Butenafine or any other ingredients in the cream.
  • Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding, as its excretion in human milk is unknown and safety in pregnancy is not fully established.
  • Not recommended for use in children below 12-18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established.
  • Avoid applying the cream on open wounds, windburned, or sunburned skin.
  • Do not use other topical medications simultaneously without a doctor's recommendation.

Storage Store FINTOP CREAM in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, at a temperature below 30°C (or between 10°C to 25°C). Keep it out of reach and sight of children and pets. Do not freeze.

Frequently asked questions

1. What is FINTOP CREAM used for?

FINTOP CREAM, manufactured by Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, is an antifungal medication primarily used to treat various fungal skin infections. These include common conditions such as ringworm (tinea corporis), athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and pityriasis (a fungal disease causing skin lightening or darkening). It helps relieve symptoms like itching, scaling, and redness.

2. How does FINTOP CREAM work?

FINTOP CREAM contains Butenafine Hydrochloride 1% as its active ingredient. Butenafine is a benzylamine antifungal that works by inhibiting an enzyme called squalene epoxidase, which is crucial for the biosynthesis of ergosterol. Ergosterol is a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. By disrupting its production, Butenafine alters the permeability of the fungal cell membrane, causing cellular contents to leak out and harmful substances to enter, ultimately inhibiting fungal growth and killing the fungus. This mechanism makes Butenafine fungicidal.

3. What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?

FINTOP CREAM is for external use only and should be used as directed by your doctor. Typically, it is applied once daily. For certain conditions like interdigital tinea pedis, it might be applied twice daily for 7 days or once daily for 4 weeks. For tinea corporis or tinea cruris, a once-daily application for two weeks is common, and for tinea versicolor, once daily for two weeks. Before application, ensure the affected skin area is thoroughly cleaned with soap and water and completely dried. Apply a thin layer of the cream and gently massage it into the skin. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after application, unless your hands are the area being treated. Continue using the cream for the full prescribed duration, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning.

4. What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects associated with FINTOP CREAM may include a burning sensation, itching, stinging sensation, skin irritation, and redness (erythema) at the application site. In some cases, allergic contact dermatitis, characterized by severe irritation, blistering, or rash, may occur. Most side effects are temporary and often resolve with continued use as your body adapts to the medication. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

5. Is FINTOP CREAM safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Caution is advised when using FINTOP CREAM during pregnancy. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on topically applied butenafine in pregnant women, and animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. Therefore, it should only be used if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, who will weigh the benefits against potential risks.

Breastfeeding: FINTOP CREAM is probably safe to use during breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests it does not pose a significant risk to the baby. However, it is unknown if butenafine HCl is excreted in human milk, so caution should still be exercised. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine while breastfeeding, and avoid applying it on or near the breast area to prevent infant exposure.

6. Can FINTOP CREAM be taken with other medications?

Potential drug interactions between butenafine HCl cream and other medications have not been extensively evaluated. However, using FINTOP CREAM with other topical antifungal medications could potentially lead to additional skin irritation. It is advisable to inform your doctor about all other topical products you are using before starting treatment. Interactions with alcohol or systemic issues like liver or kidney conditions are generally not expected, as it is an externally applied medication.

7. What precautions should I take while using FINTOP CREAM?

  • FINTOP CREAM is for external use only.
  • Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, nose, and other mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with plenty of water and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Do not apply the cream on open wounds, broken, windburned, or sunburned skin.
  • Do not cover the treated area with bandages or any other covering unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as this might increase absorption and side effects.
  • Do not use more than the recommended dosage or for a longer duration than prescribed, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • The safety and efficacy of FINTOP CREAM in children have not been clearly established, so it is not recommended for pediatric patients unless prescribed by a doctor.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene, such as keeping the affected area clean and dry, wearing breathable fabrics, and avoiding sharing personal items, to help manage and prevent fungal infections.

8. What should I do if I miss a dose of FINTOP CREAM?

If you miss a dose of FINTOP CREAM, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.

9. How should FINTOP CREAM be stored?

Store FINTOP CREAM at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, in a cool and dry place. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Ensure the tube is tightly closed when not in use. Always keep FINTOP CREAM out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
