SOLIACT 10 MG Tablets

Name: Soliact (Brand Name), Solifenacin (Common Name)

Composition: Each tablet contains Solifenacin Succinate 10 mg.

Uses: SOLIACT 10 MG is primarily used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB). This includes conditions such as:

  • Frequent urination
  • Urgent need to urinate (urgency)
  • Inability to control urination (urge urinary incontinence)
  • Neurogenic detrusor overactivity (a bladder control condition due to neurological problems) in adults and children 2 years and above

The medication works by relaxing the bladder muscles, thereby increasing the bladder's capacity to hold urine and reducing involuntary contractions.

Dosage and Administration: The recommended dose of SOLIACT is typically 5 mg once daily. If well tolerated and symptoms do not improve, the dose may be increased to 10 mg once daily. Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, with or without food. Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet. It's important to take it at the same time each day. Full benefits may take up to 4 weeks to be observed.

Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea, indigestion, or upset stomach
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Headache, fatigue, or dizziness

Serious but rare side effects can include severe fecal impaction, colonic obstruction, intestinal obstruction (especially at 10 mg dose), urinary retention, and angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat).

Precautions:

  • Exercise caution in patients with liver or kidney disease; dose adjustments may be necessary.
  • Inform your doctor if you have glaucoma (especially narrow-angle glaucoma), bladder blockage, myasthenia gravis, or a history of heart rhythm problems (including QT prolongation).
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or blurred vision; avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Avoid alcohol as it may worsen side effects.
  • Not recommended for children under 18 years unless prescribed for neurogenic detrusor overactivity.
  • Use with caution in pregnant or breastfeeding women, after consulting a doctor.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking to avoid potential interactions, especially with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole.

Storage: Store SOLIACT tablets at room temperature (between 20°C to 25°C or below 30°C) in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep out of sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

What is SOLIACT 10 MG TAB used for?

SOLIACT 10 MG TAB, containing solifenacin, is primarily used to treat the symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB) in adults. These symptoms include frequent urination, urgent need to urinate, and inability to control urination (urinary incontinence). It can also be used for neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), a bladder control condition caused by neurological problems.

How does SOLIACT 10 MG TAB work?

SOLIACT 10 MG TAB belongs to a class of medications called antimuscarinics or anticholinergics. Its active ingredient, solifenacin, works by blocking muscarinic receptors (specifically the M3 subtype) located in the bladder's smooth muscles. This action prevents acetylcholine, a chemical messenger, from causing involuntary bladder muscle contractions. By relaxing the bladder muscles, it increases the bladder's capacity to hold urine, thereby reducing the frequency and urgency of urination and helping to control incontinence.

What is the usual dosage for SOLIACT 10 MG TAB?

The recommended starting dose for adults is typically 5 mg once daily. If this dose is well tolerated and symptoms do not improve, your doctor may increase it to 10 mg once daily. It should be swallowed whole with water, and can be taken with or without food. It's best to take it at the same time each day.

What are the possible side effects of SOLIACT 10 MG TAB?

Common side effects include dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, nausea, indigestion, upset stomach, urinary tract infections, dizziness, drowsiness, and fatigue. Some individuals may also experience abdominal pain, burping/belching, or heartburn. More severe but rare side effects can include urinary retention, QT prolongation, hallucinations, angioedema, and anaphylaxis.

Is SOLIACT 10 MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: SOLIACT 10 MG TAB may not be safe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have indicated potential harm to the developing baby. It should only be used if the potential benefits are considered to outweigh the potential risks to the fetus, and only after consulting your doctor.

Breastfeeding: While limited data suggests it may be probably safe if prescribed, it is not known whether solifenacin is excreted in human milk. Long-term use might potentially reduce milk production and cause side effects like constipation, dry mouth, or urine infection in the baby. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the medication.

Can SOLIACT 10 MG TAB be taken with other medications?

SOLIACT 10 MG TAB can interact with certain medications. Concomitant use with potent CYP3A4 inhibitors (such as ketoconazole, ritonavir, nelfinavir, or itraconazole) can increase the levels of solifenacin in your body, potentially worsening side effects, and may require a dosage adjustment. Taking it with other anticholinergic medications may lead to additive effects, increasing the risk of side effects like dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. Conversely, CYP3A4 inducers like rifampicin may decrease solifenacin's effectiveness. It can also increase the risk of arrhythmias when taken with drugs that prolong the QT interval. Always inform your doctor about all medications, herbal preparations, and supplements you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken while using SOLIACT 10 MG TAB?

Several precautions should be observed:

  • Driving and Operating Machinery: This medicine can cause dizziness, blurred vision, and drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Liver and Kidney Conditions: Use with caution if you have liver or kidney disease. Dosage adjustments may be necessary, and it is generally contraindicated in severe liver disease.
  • Other Medical Conditions: Caution is advised for individuals with bladder outflow obstruction (due to risk of urinary retention), uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, or certain stomach or bowel problems (like gastric retention or ulcerative colitis).
  • Dietary Considerations: Avoid grapefruit or grapefruit juice, as well as alcohol and caffeine, as they can potentially worsen OAB symptoms or affect medication levels.
  • Heat Exposure: Solifenacin may make it harder for your body to cool down in hot weather, increasing the risk of heat stroke. Exercise caution during physical activity or in hot environments.
  • Children: For OAB, it's generally not recommended for children under 12 or 18 years of age, depending on the specific prescribing information. However, it can be used for NDO in children aged 2 years and older, usually in liquid form.

What happens if a dose of SOLIACT 10 MG TAB is missed?

If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should SOLIACT 10 MG TAB be stored?

Store SOLIACT 10 MG TAB at room temperature, typically between 10ºC to 25ºC (or below 30ºC), in a cool and dry place. Keep it away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Ensure it is stored out of the reach and sight of children and pets. Do not freeze the medication.
