Frequently asked questions
Zoxan Eye Drops are an antibiotic medication primarily used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes. This includes conditions such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye), corneal ulcers, blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), and keratitis (inflammation of the cornea).
How does Zoxan Eye Drops work?
Zoxan Eye Drops contain Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting specific bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are vital for bacterial DNA replication and repair. By blocking these processes, Ciprofloxacin effectively kills the bacteria causing the eye infection. The drops also contain Benzalkonium Chloride, which acts as an antimicrobial preservative.
What is the usual dosage for Zoxan Eye Drops?
The dosage of Zoxan Eye Drops varies depending on the type and severity of the eye infection, and should always be followed as prescribed by your doctor. For bacterial conjunctivitis, a common regimen involves instilling one or two drops into the affected eye every two hours while awake for two days, followed by one or two drops every four hours while awake for the next five days. For corneal ulcers, the dosing schedule is typically more frequent in the initial stages of treatment.
What are the possible side effects of Zoxan Eye Drops?
Common side effects include temporary eye irritation, redness, discomfort, and blurred vision. You might also experience eyelid swelling or itching, a foreign body sensation in the eye, headache, or a taste disturbance. Occasionally, white crystal-like corneal deposits may form, especially with frequent use for corneal ulcers, but these are generally harmless and usually clear up after treatment. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is Zoxan Eye Drops safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Zoxan Eye Drops should be used with caution during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is crucial to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding to discuss the potential risks and benefits.
Can Zoxan Eye Drops be taken with other medications?
Specific drug interaction studies with ophthalmic ciprofloxacin are limited due to its low systemic absorption. However, it's important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements. If you are using other topical ophthalmic medications, they should be administered at least 5 to 15 minutes apart, with eye ointments applied last.
What precautions should be taken while using Zoxan Eye Drops?
- Do not use Zoxan Eye Drops if you are allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolone antibiotics, or any other ingredients in the drops.
- Avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment for an eye infection. If you are permitted to wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- Complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
- Zoxan Eye Drops may cause temporary blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your vision is clear.
- To prevent contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface.
What happens if a dose of Zoxan Eye Drops is missed?
If you miss a dose of Zoxan Eye Drops, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use extra drops to make up for a missed dose.
How should Zoxan Eye Drops be stored?
Store Zoxan Eye Drops at room temperature, typically not exceeding 30°C or below 25°C, and protect them from direct light. Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use and ensure it is kept out of reach of children. It is recommended to discard the product 30 days after opening.
