OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops 5 mL

OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops are a combination antibiotic medication manufactured by Centaur Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, designed for topical use in bacterial infections of the eyes and ears.

  • Name: OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops (Brand Name: OCUPOL)

  • Composition:

    • Polymyxin B (5000 IU/ml)
    • Chloramphenicol (4 mg/ml)
  • Uses: OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops are primarily prescribed for the treatment of bacterial infections affecting:

    • Surface ocular infections involving the conjunctiva and/or cornea.
    • Superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal.
    • Infections of mastoidectomy and fenestration cavities. The active ingredients are effective against a range of susceptible organisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus species. This medication is not effective against viral or fungal infections.
  • Dosage and Administration: This medicine is for external use only. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to prevent contamination.

    • For Eye Infections: Typically, 2 drops are instilled into the affected eye every 3 hours. Administration should be continued day and night for the initial 48 hours, after which the interval between applications may be increased. Treatment should persist for at least 48 hours after the eye appears normal. Some sources suggest 2-4 times a day, or as directed by a doctor.
    • For Ear Infections:
      • Adults: 4 drops of the suspension instilled into the affected ear three to four times daily.
      • Infants and Children: 3 drops instilled into the affected ear three to four times daily. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure complete recovery and prevent recurrence.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects may include:

    • Transient burning or stinging sensations.
    • Irritation, itching, or redness at the application site.
    • Blurred vision. Serious, though rare, side effects associated with topical chloramphenicol can include blood dyscrasias, such as bone marrow hypoplasia and aplastic anaemia. Hypersensitivity reactions like angioneurotic oedema, urticaria, anaphylaxis, fever, and skin rashes may also occur.
  • Precautions:

    • The prolonged use of antibiotics may occasionally result in the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If new infections appear, discontinue the drug.
    • Use with caution in cases of perforated eardrum and chronic otitis media due to the possibility of ototoxicity (ear damage).
    • Individuals should avoid wearing contact lenses during treatment for eye infections.
    • If using other eye drops, maintain a 10-minute time gap between applications.
    • OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops are not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women.
    • As temporary blurred vision may occur, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery immediately after applying the drops until vision is clear.
    • A known personal or family history of blood dyscrasias, including aplastic anemia, is a contraindication for chloramphenicol.
  • Storage: Store in a cool and dry place. Keep out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any unused medicine safely.

Frequently asked questions

What is OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops used for?

OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops is a combination antibiotic medicine used to treat bacterial infections of the eye and ear. Specifically, it is indicated for surface bacterial infections of the conjunctiva and/or cornea of the eye, and for superficial bacterial infections of the external auditory canal, as well as infections of mastoidectomy and fenestration cavities. It is not effective against viral or fungal infections.

How does OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops work?

This medicine contains two antibiotics: Polymyxin B and Chloramphenicol. Polymyxin B works by disrupting the bacterial cell wall, which is essential for the bacteria's survival and prevents leakage of cell contents, thus killing the bacteria. Chloramphenicol works by inhibiting the production of essential proteins required for bacteria to grow and multiply. Together, they effectively destroy the bacteria causing the infection.

What is the usual dosage for OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops?

The dosage depends on whether it's for eye or ear use and the patient's age.

  • For Eye Infections (Adults): Typically, 2 drops are instilled into the affected eye every 3 hours. For the first 48 hours, administration should continue day and night. After this, the interval between applications may be increased. Treatment should continue for at least 48 hours after the eye appears normal. Some sources also suggest twice a day (morning and evening) or up to four times a day for severe symptoms.
  • For Ear Infections (Adults): The usual recommended dose is 4 drops into the affected ear three to four times a day (tid or qid).
  • For Ear Infections (Infants and Children): The dose is typically 3 drops into the affected ear three to four times a day (tid or qid). It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions for the specific dose and duration and complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cured.

What are the possible side effects of OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops?

Common side effects can include temporary burning, stinging, irritation, itching, redness, dryness, eye discomfort, blurred vision, and ear pain or a ringing sensation at the application site. More serious, though rare, side effects reported with chloramphenicol include bone marrow hypoplasia, including aplastic anemia, which can be fatal. Hypersensitivity reactions such as angioneurotic edema, urticaria, anaphylaxis, fever, and various forms of dermatitis may also occur. If these occur, treatment should be discontinued immediately.

Is OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops is generally not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies on its use during pregnancy or lactation, and one of its ingredients, chloramphenicol, can be absorbed systemically and cross the placenta. It is advisable to consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops be taken with other medications?

Since OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops is for external use, systemic drug interactions are less likely. However, you should inform your doctor about all other medications you are using, especially any other eye or ear drops. If you are using multiple eye or ear medications, it's recommended to wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applications. Neomycin is one medication that may interact with OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops.

What precautions should be taken while using OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops?

  • This medicine is for external use only.
  • To prevent contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, ear, or any other surface.
  • Prolonged use of antibiotics may occasionally lead to an overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If new infections appear, the drug should be discontinued, and appropriate measures taken.
  • Use with caution if you have a perforated eardrum or chronic otitis media, due to the possibility of ototoxicity (ear damage).
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses during the course of treatment for eye infections as they may worsen the infection.
  • If you experience temporary blurred vision after applying the drops to your eyes, avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a family history of blood disorders.

What happens if a dose of OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops be stored?

OCUPOL Eye/Ear Drops should be stored in a cool and dry place. Keep the medicine out of reach of children and pets. Any unused medicine should be discarded safely according to local guidelines.
