Frequently asked questions

What is Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) used for?

Triz Tablet, containing Cetirizine, is primarily used to relieve symptoms associated with various allergic conditions. These include seasonal allergies like hay fever, year-round allergies such as those caused by dust mites or pet dander, and chronic urticaria (hives). It helps alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat or nose, and itchy skin rashes. It may also provide symptomatic relief for conditions like the common cold, characterized by a runny or blocked nose.

How does Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) work?

Triz Tablet works by blocking the effects of histamine, a natural substance produced by the body during an allergic reaction. When allergens enter the body, immune cells release histamine, which then binds to H1 receptors, leading to allergic symptoms like inflammation, itching, and increased mucus production. Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine that acts as a selective H1 receptor antagonist, meaning it competes with histamine for binding sites on these receptors, thereby preventing histamine from exerting its effects and reducing allergy symptoms. It has a high affinity for peripheral H1 receptors and only slightly crosses the blood-brain barrier, which minimizes sedative effects for most people compared to first-generation antihistamines.

What is the usual dosage of Triz Tablet (Cetirizine)?

For adults and children 6 years and older, the typical dosage of Cetirizine is one 10-milligram (mg) dose once daily. Depending on the severity of symptoms, a doctor might recommend a 5-mg dose once or twice a day. Adults 65 years and older should generally start with a lower dose of 5 mg once daily. The maximum dose in a 24-hour period should not exceed 10 mg. For children aged 2 to under 6 years, the usual dosage is 2.5 mg once daily, which can be increased to a maximum of 5 mg once daily or 2.5 mg every 12 hours if needed. Cetirizine can be taken with or without food.

What are the possible side effects of Triz Tablet (Cetirizine)?

While Cetirizine is generally well-tolerated, some common side effects include drowsiness, excessive tiredness, dry mouth, headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting. Less common side effects can include dizziness, anxiety, nervousness, fatigue, and trouble sleeping. More serious, though rare, side effects that warrant immediate medical attention include allergic reactions like skin rash, itching, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, as well as heart palpitations or an increase in blood pressure. Severe itching may also occur within a few days after stopping long-term use of cetirizine.

Is Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, it is generally considered safe to take cetirizine, and studies involving over 1,300 pregnancies exposed to cetirizine did not show an increased chance of birth defects or other pregnancy-related problems like preterm delivery or low birth weight. However, it is always recommended to talk to your doctor or healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy.

For breastfeeding individuals, cetirizine passes into breast milk in small amounts. Most reports indicate no problems for babies exposed to cetirizine through breast milk, and it is considered one of the preferred antihistamines during breastfeeding due to a lower chance of causing drowsiness in the infant compared to some other antihistamines. However, a product label for cetirizine recommends breastfeeding women not use this medication. Consult your healthcare provider to discuss the benefits and risks.

Can Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) be taken with other medications?

Cetirizine can interact with other substances and medications. Avoid consuming alcoholic beverages while taking cetirizine, as this can increase drowsiness and make you less alert. Taking cetirizine with tranquilizers, sedatives, sleep aids, or other central nervous system depressants (including certain medications for depression, anxiety, or pain like opioids and benzodiazepines) can also increase sleepiness and affect mental alertness. There is also a possibility of interaction with theophylline (used for asthma) at daily doses of 400 mg or more, potentially extending the time cetirizine stays in the body. Inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using Triz Tablet (Cetirizine)?

It's important to be aware of several precautions when taking Triz Tablet (Cetirizine). Due to the potential for drowsiness, even if mild, exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you. Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants as they can increase drowsiness. Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, as a lower dose may be necessary. Do not use cetirizine if you are allergic to it or any of its ingredients, or to hydroxyzine (a related antihistamine). If you are scheduled for allergy testing, discuss with your doctor whether to stop taking cetirizine beforehand, as it may affect test results.

What happens if a dose of Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) is missed?

If you miss a dose of Triz Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed one.

How should Triz Tablet (Cetirizine) be stored?

Triz Tablet should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, generally between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not freeze the liquid form of this medicine. Dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
