FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray

FLUTIFLO FT is a corticosteroid nasal spray manufactured by Lupin Ltd., primarily used to manage symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

  • Composition The active ingredient in FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray is Fluticasone Furoate (27.5 mcg).

  • Uses FLUTIFLO FT is prescribed for alleviating symptoms of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, including nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, itching in the nose, and post-nasal drip. It may also be used as an adjunct therapy for nasal polyps and mild sinusitis symptoms.

  • Dosage and Administration The dosage should be as prescribed by a doctor. Typically, for adults and children over 12 years, the recommended dose is two sprays into each nostril once daily. For children aged 4 to 11 years, the usual dose is one spray into each nostril once daily. The bottle should be gently shaken before each use, and if not used for a while, primed until a fine mist appears. It is for nasal use only; direct the spray towards the sides of the nostril, away from the dividing cartilage. Avoid blowing your nose immediately after application.

  • Side Effects Common side effects include headache, nosebleeds, nasal discomfort, irritation, burning or itching sensations, sore throat, nausea, cough, nasal ulceration, and dryness. More serious but rare side effects can include vision changes (such as blurred vision, cataracts, or glaucoma with long-term use), severe allergic reactions, and nasal septal perforation (a hole in the nasal cartilage). It can also increase the risk of fungal infections like thrush in the nose or throat.

  • Precautions Inform your doctor if you are allergic to fluticasone or any other ingredients. Caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and for individuals with liver problems, tuberculosis, untreated infections, glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, a weak immune system, or recent nasal surgery or injury. Avoid contact with individuals who have contagious diseases like chickenpox, measles, or tuberculosis, as this medicine may lower the body's ability to fight infections. Interactions can occur with medicines like ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, and cobicistat-containing medicines.

  • Storage Store FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray at room temperature, generally below 25°C or 30°C. Keep the bottle in an upright position and protect it from sunlight and moisture, out of the reach of children. Do not use it after 120 sprays, even if medicine remains.

Frequently asked questions

What is FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray used for?

FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray is primarily used to treat symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, sinus discomfort, and itchy or watery eyes. It provides relief from these symptoms, which can be caused by seasonal or perennial allergies. It is not indicated for the common cold.

How does FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray work?

FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray is a corticosteroid that works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the body that cause inflammation (redness and swelling) and allergic reactions. By doing so, it reduces swelling and irritation in the nasal passages, helping to relieve discomfort and improve breathing.

What is the usual dosage for FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray?

The dosage of FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray should always be as advised by your doctor. It is typically used once or twice daily. To use, shake the bottle, clear your nostrils, then insert the tip into one nostril while closing the other. Aim the spray towards the sides of your nostril, away from the central cartilage, and breathe gently as you spray. Repeat for the other nostril if necessary. It is important to use it regularly to get the full benefit, and it may take a few days for the spray to take full effect. If symptoms do not improve after a week, consult your doctor. This medicine is generally not recommended for children below 6 years of age.

What are the possible side effects of FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray?

Common side effects of FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray include nasal discomforts such as burning or itching, nasal inflammation, headache, nosebleeds, and nasal ulceration. Other possible side effects include breathlessness, sore throat, nausea, and cough. In rare cases, more serious side effects like severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, breathing difficulty, swelling of face/throat/tongue) or vision changes can occur. Long-term or high-dose use can also lead to thrush (a fungal infection), growth retardation in children, weakening of bones (osteoporosis), and diabetes.

Is FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray may be unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby. It should only be used if clearly necessary, and after discussing the risks and benefits with your healthcare provider. During Breastfeeding: FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray is probably safe to use during breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug does not represent any significant risk to the baby. However, it is still advised to consult your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.

Can FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray be taken with other medications?

FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray can interact with certain medications. Specifically, strong inhibitors of the enzyme CYP3A4, such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, and cobicistat-containing products (used to manage HIV and fungal infections), can increase the levels of fluticasone in your body, potentially raising the risk of side effects. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal preparations you are taking, as well as any planned surgeries or vaccinations.

What precautions should be taken while using FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray?

Avoid using FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray if you are allergic to fluticasone or any other ingredients. Use with caution if you have conditions like tuberculosis, untreated infections, ocular herpes simplex, a recent nasal injury, or have undergone nasal surgery. This medicine may lower your body's ability to fight off infections, so try to avoid contact with people who have chickenpox, measles, or tuberculosis. For long-term use in children, a doctor may monitor their growth. It is important to follow proper administration techniques, such as avoiding blowing your nose immediately after use. This medicine is specifically for allergic rhinitis and should not be used for the common cold.

What happens if a dose of FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray is missed?

If you miss a dose of FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray be stored?

FLUTIFLO FT Nasal Spray should be stored below 25°C or 30°C, at room temperature, and protected from light and moisture. It should not be refrigerated or frozen. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.
