Description
BRIMOCOM EYE DROP 5 ML by CIPLA LTD.
Name
BRIMOCOM EYE DROP.
Composition
BRIMOCOM EYE DROP contains two active ingredients: Brimonidine (0.2% or 2 mg/ml) and Timolol (0.5% or 5 mg/ml). It also includes Benzalkonium Chloride (0.005%) as a preservative.
Uses
BRIMOCOM EYE DROP is primarily prescribed to lower elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It can also be used as an adjunct to other glaucoma therapies or as an initial treatment when a significant reduction in IOP (more than 5 mmHg) is needed. Additionally, it may help relieve redness associated with minor eye irritations.
Dosage and Administration
Typically, one drop is instilled into the affected eye(s) twice daily, or as directed by a healthcare professional.
Instructions for use:
- Wash hands thoroughly before application to prevent contamination.
- Tilt the head back slightly and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
- Hold the dropper above the eye without touching the eye or any other surface to maintain sterility.
- Gently squeeze the bottle to release one drop into the pocket.
- Close the eye gently for 1-2 minutes, avoiding blinking or squeezing tightly, to allow proper absorption.
- Wipe away any excess liquid from the face with a clean tissue.
- If using multiple eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent dilution.
- Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
- Do not discontinue use without consulting a doctor. If a dose is missed, skip it and continue with the regular schedule; do not double the dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include:
- Blurred vision
- Eye irritation, dryness, itching, burning, or stinging sensation
- Redness of the eye (conjunctival hyperemia)
- Foreign body sensation in the eye
- Headache
- Tiredness or drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Changes in alertness
Most of these side effects are usually temporary and subside as the body adjusts to the medication. Consult a doctor if any side effects persist or worsen. Seek immediate medical attention for severe allergic reactions such as intense itching, severe redness, or sensitivity to light.
Precautions
- Contraindications: Do not use if hypersensitive to Brimonidine, Timolol, or any other components of the eye drop. It is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
- Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with heart problems (e.g., severe heart conditions), respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), depression, diabetes, hyperthyroid disease, liver or kidney disease, or myasthenia gravis, as systemic absorption may worsen these conditions.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor if pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
- Driving and Machinery: BRIMOCOM EYE DROP may cause temporary blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until vision is clear and alertness returns.
- Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, as interactions can occur. Specific interactions can occur with other alpha-2 agonists and beta-blockers, potentially increasing systemic side effects.
- Alcohol: It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while undergoing treatment.
Storage
Store BRIMOCOM EYE DROP at a temperature not exceeding 15°C - 25°C, or below 30°C. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Discard the bottle if the solution changes color or contains particles. The eye drops should be used within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.
Frequently asked questions
Here are some frequently asked questions about BRIMOCOM EYE DROP 5 ML by CIPLA LTD.
What is Brimocom Eye Drop used for?
Brimocom Eye Drop is a prescription medicine primarily used to lower elevated pressure within the eyes. It treats conditions such as open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, which are characterized by increased intraocular pressure (IOP). If left untreated, these conditions can lead to optic nerve damage and potential vision loss.
How does Brimocom Eye Drop work?
Brimocom Eye Drop contains two active ingredients: Brimonidine (an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist) and Timolol (a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor blocker). Brimonidine works by reducing the production of aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) and increasing its outflow. Timolol also decreases the secretion of aqueous humor. Together, these dual actions synergistically lower the eye pressure more effectively than either medication alone.
What is the usual dosage and how should it be applied?
Brimocom Eye Drop is typically prescribed for twice-daily administration, usually about 12 hours apart, or as directed by your doctor. To apply, first wash your hands thoroughly. Tilt your head back slightly, pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket, and squeeze one drop into the pocket without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface. Close your eye gently for 1-2 minutes without blinking or rubbing, and gently press the inner corner of your eye (near the nose) for about 1 minute to help with absorption and reduce systemic effects. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.
What are the possible side effects of Brimocom Eye Drop?
Common side effects include burning, itching, stinging sensation, redness in the eye (conjunctival hyperemia), dry eyes, blurred vision, headache, fatigue, drowsiness, and dryness in the mouth. Most of these effects are usually temporary and subside as your body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist or worsen, it's important to consult your doctor.
Is Brimocom Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Brimocom Eye Drop is generally not recommended during pregnancy as there is limited information on its effects and animal studies have shown adverse effects on the fetus. It may also pass into breast milk, making it unsafe for breastfeeding mothers. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding before using this medication.
Can Brimocom Eye Drop be taken with other medications?
This medicine can interact with several other medications. It's crucial to inform your doctor about all prescription, non-prescription, and herbal medicines you are taking. Interactions can occur with central nervous system depressants (like morphine, zolpidem), certain heart medications (such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, digitalis), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and tricyclic antidepressants. Using multiple eye medications requires a waiting period of at least 5-10 minutes between applications.
What precautions should be taken when using Brimocom Eye Drop?
Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery immediately after using these eye drops, as they can cause temporary blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove them before applying the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. Do not use if you have severe respiratory conditions like asthma or severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), certain heart diseases, or a history of allergic reactions to its components. Caution is also advised for patients with depression, diabetes, thyroid disorders, or liver/kidney diseases.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of Brimocom Eye Drop, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should it be stored?
Brimocom Eye Drop should be stored at room temperature (typically 20-25°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep the container tightly closed when not in use. It is important to dispose of any unused medicine, especially after 4 weeks of opening the bottle, to prevent contamination.
