IGNALIS 50 MG Tablet

Name: Ignalis 50 mg Tablet (Brand name), Sitagliptin (Common name)

Composition: Each tablet contains Sitagliptin 50 mg.

Uses: Ignalis 50 mg Tablet is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to help control high blood sugar levels. By improving glycemic control, it helps reduce the risk of long-term diabetic complications such as kidney damage, eye damage, nerve problems, limb amputations, heart attack, and stroke.

Dosage and Administration: The typical dosage is one Ignalis 50 mg Tablet once daily, taken with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed, chewed, or broken. It is recommended to take the medicine at the same time each day for optimal benefit. Dosage adjustments may be necessary based on individual blood sugar levels and kidney function.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Upper respiratory tract infections, headache, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal passages and throat), low blood sugar (hypoglycemia, especially when combined with other diabetes medications), stomach discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, joint pain, runny or stuffy nose, and back pain.
  • Serious Side Effects (Rare): Acute pancreatitis (severe and persistent stomach pain that may spread to the back), severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing), heart failure, and bullous pemphigoid (skin blistering).

Precautions:

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions to sitagliptin or any other components of the tablet.
  • Exercise caution if you have kidney or liver problems, pancreatitis, gallstones, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, heart problems/heart failure, or high blood triglyceride levels.
  • Not recommended for children below 18 years of age.
  • Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid or limit alcohol consumption, as it may increase the risk of low blood sugar.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness and drowsiness; operate machinery or drive only if you are alert.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, as drug interactions can occur, particularly with other antidiabetic medicines like insulin or sulfonylureas.

Storage: Store Ignalis 50 mg Tablet in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and below 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Here are the most frequently asked questions about Ignalis 50 MG tablets:

What is Ignalis 50 MG used for?

Ignalis 50 MG Tablet is primarily used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It is prescribed alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise to help control blood sugar levels and prevent serious complications of diabetes, such as kidney damage and blindness. It is often used when diet and exercise alone, or other medications, are not sufficient to manage blood sugar.

How does Ignalis 50 MG work?

Ignalis 50 MG contains Sitagliptin, which is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. It works by blocking the action of the DPP-4 enzyme, which in turn increases the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreases the hormones (glucagon) that raise blood sugar levels. This combined action helps to reduce both fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels.

What is the usual dosage for Ignalis 50 MG?

The dosage of Ignalis 50 MG is determined by your doctor based on your specific condition and blood sugar levels. It is typically taken once daily, with or without food. For the best results, it is advisable to take the tablet at the same time each day. You should swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water and avoid chewing, crushing, or breaking it.

What are the possible side effects of Ignalis 50 MG?

Common side effects of Ignalis 50 MG include nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), headache, and hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), especially when taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylurea. Other reported side effects include upper respiratory tract infection, nasal congestion, joint pain, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, flatulence, vomiting, and back pain. In rare cases, more serious side effects such as acute pancreatitis and heart failure have been observed.

Is Ignalis 50 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Information regarding the use of Ignalis 50 MG during pregnancy is not readily available, and it is generally advised to consult your doctor. Caution is recommended as poorly managed blood sugars can harm the fetus. Breastfeeding: It is probably unsafe to use Ignalis 50 MG while breastfeeding. Limited human data suggests that the drug may pass into breastmilk and could potentially harm the baby. It is advisable to discuss this with your doctor to explore safer alternatives.

Can Ignalis 50 MG be taken with other medications?

Yes, but caution is advised. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including supplements and herbal products. Ignalis 50 MG may interact with other antidiabetic medications (such as insulin or sulfonylureas), which can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). If Ignalis is a combination product containing Metformin, interactions with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, certain cationic medicines, and diuretics like furosemide may occur. Your healthcare provider will review your medication list to prevent potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while taking Ignalis 50 MG?

Before starting Ignalis 50 MG, inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease, heart problems (including heart failure), pancreas conditions (such as pancreatitis), liver problems, or any known allergies to sitagliptin or its components. It is important to limit or avoid alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar and, if combined with metformin (in some Ignalis formulations), lactic acidosis. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood glucose levels may be necessary to ensure the medication is working correctly and safely. You should also be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia and carry a quick source of sugar (like fruit juice or glucose candy) to manage them. If you experience severe and persistent stomach pain, or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, seek immediate medical attention. Ignalis 50 MG is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose of Ignalis 50 MG is missed?

If you miss a dose of Ignalis 50 MG, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing routine. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Ignalis 50 MG be stored?

Ignalis 50 MG tablets should be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally below 25°C or 30°C. Keep the medication protected from moisture and light, and ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
