LOBAZAM 10 MG Tablet

Name: Lobazam 10 MG Tablet (Brand name: Lobazam)

Composition: Each tablet contains Clobazam 10 mg as the active ingredient. Clobazam belongs to a group of medicines called Benzodiazepines.

Uses: Lobazam 10 MG Tablet is prescribed to manage various neurological and mental health conditions. It is primarily used to treat epilepsy (fits) by stabilizing the electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain. It is also used for short-term management of severe anxiety and can be used in combination with other medicines to treat schizophrenia, a mental illness. Additionally, it can help in muscle relaxation and short-term relief of sleep disturbances.

Dosage and Administration: Lobazam 10 MG Tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by a doctor. It can be taken with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not crushed, chewed, or broken. Dosage for adults and children (2 years and older weighing over 30 kg) typically starts at 10 mg per day, given as two divided doses. The doctor may adjust the dose, but it usually does not exceed 40 mg per day. Abrupt discontinuation of the medicine is not recommended as it may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as convulsions, behavioral disorders, and anxiety.

Side Effects: Common side effects include drowsiness, irritability, fatigue, constipation, restlessness, aggressive behavior, and breathing problems. More serious but rare side effects can include suicidal thoughts or tendencies, agitation, memory problems (amnesia), hallucinations, and unusual behavior.

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy or for breastfeeding mothers as it may cause adverse effects on the baby.
  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption, as it can increase side effects like drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: May cause dizziness, drowsiness, or blurred vision, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery if affected.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in elderly patients and those with liver problems, kidney disease, depression, myasthenia gravis, or sleep apnea.
  • Dependence: Clobazam has the potential for drug dependence and abuse, especially with prolonged use.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, including other epilepsy medicines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and opioids, as interactions can occur.

Storage: Store Lobazam 10 MG Tablets in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. The recommended storage temperature is between 10ºC and 25ºC or below 30ºC.

Frequently asked questions

LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is a medication containing Clobazam, which belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. It is manufactured by SUN PHARMA LABORATORIES LTD.

Here are some frequently asked questions about LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET:

What is LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET used for?

LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is primarily used for the long-term management of epilepsy (seizures), particularly certain types like Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, and for the short-term treatment of severe anxiety. It may also be used in conjunction with other medicines for mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, and to help relieve short-term symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

How does LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET work?

LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET works by enhancing the action of a natural chemical messenger in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that helps to calm and regulate brain activity. By increasing GABA's effects, Clobazam suppresses the abnormal and excessive electrical activity of nerve cells in the brain, thereby helping to control seizures and reduce anxiety.

What is the usual dosage for LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET?

The dosage of LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is determined by your doctor based on your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. For adults, a typical starting dose may be 5 to 10 mg per day, which can be gradually adjusted. It is often taken in divided doses (e.g., twice daily) or as a single dose at night. The maximum daily dose usually does not exceed 40-60 mg. For children, the dose will be adjusted based on their body weight and age. Always follow your doctor's instructions precisely.

What are the possible side effects of LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET?

Common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, sleepiness, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, constipation, decreased appetite, nausea, irritability, aggression, restlessness, and depression. Some individuals may experience difficulty staying awake or alert, slurred speech, or difficulty with movement. More serious but rare side effects can include severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome), suicidal thoughts or behaviors, and paradoxical reactions such as increased agitation or aggression. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.

Is LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

  • Pregnancy: LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it may cause adverse effects in the baby, including withdrawal symptoms, "floppy infant syndrome," or changes in heart rate and movement. It is important to discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
  • Breastfeeding: The use of LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is generally not recommended during breastfeeding because the active ingredient can pass into breast milk and may cause adverse effects such as drowsiness, lethargy, or muscle weakness in the infant. Consult your doctor for advice if you are breastfeeding.

Can LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET be taken with other medications?

LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET can interact with several other medications. Taking it with other sedatives, such as opioids, barbiturates, or certain anxiety medications, can significantly increase the risk of severe drowsiness, breathing problems, coma, and even death. It may also interact with some antifungal medications (e.g., fluconazole) and stomach medicines (e.g., omeprazole). Additionally, Clobazam can reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken while using LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET?

  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption while taking LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET, as it can intensify drowsiness and other side effects.
  • Driving & Machinery: Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness, sleepiness, and impaired motor skills.
  • Abrupt Discontinuation: Do not stop taking LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET suddenly, as this can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including an increase in seizure frequency, anxiety, tremors, and behavioral changes. Your doctor will provide a plan for gradual dose reduction if needed.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution if you have liver disease, kidney disease, breathing disorders, myasthenia gravis, or sleep apnea. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Dependence: This medicine has a potential for habit-forming, so take it strictly as prescribed by your doctor and do not exceed the recommended dose or duration.

What happens if a dose of LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET is missed?

If you miss a dose of LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you frequently miss doses or are unsure, consult your doctor for guidance.

How should LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET be stored?

Store LOBAZAM 10 MG TABLET in a cool, dry place, typically at room temperature (between 15°C and 30°C or 68°F and 77°F), away from direct sunlight and moisture.
