ORDENT TABLET (10 TAB) by DR REDDY S LABORATORIES LTD

ORDENT TABLET is a potent antibiotic combination medication prescribed for a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections. It is manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd.

  • Composition: Each ORDENT TABLET contains Ofloxacin 200mg and Ornidazole 500mg. Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication, thereby blocking their multiplication and growth. Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole derivative that kills parasites and anaerobic bacteria by damaging their DNA and interfering with protein formation.
  • Uses: ORDENT TABLET is used to treat various bacterial and parasitic infections. These include:
    • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
    • Gastrointestinal tract infections, such as diarrhea and dysentery caused by mixed infections in adults.
    • Lung infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis).
    • Skin and soft tissue infections.
    • Eye and ear infections.
    • Sexually transmitted infections.
    • Vaginal and other genital tract infections.
    • Protozoan and intra-abdominal infections.
    • Prevention of infections during surgical procedures, particularly colon and gynecological operations.
  • Dosage and Administration: ORDENT TABLET is for oral use. It should be taken with food at a fixed time each day for better absorption and efficacy, or as advised by your doctor. The usual dosage is one tablet once or twice daily. It is crucial to complete the full prescribed course of treatment, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection and prevent antibiotic resistance. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablet; swallow it whole with water.
  • Side Effects: Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, changes in taste sensation, insomnia, itching, and vaginal inflammation. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor. Serious side effects can include tendon pain, swelling, inflammation, or rupture, and allergic reactions such as rashes, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
  • Precautions:
    • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption while taking ORDENT TABLET, as it may increase dizziness and drowsiness.
    • Allergies: Do not take this medication if you are allergic to Ofloxacin, Ornidazole, or any of its components, or if you have experienced tendon swelling or tearing with quinolone antibiotics.
    • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, low potassium levels, nervous or muscle disorders (like myasthenia gravis), head injury, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, or heart, kidney, or liver complications.
    • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
    • Driving and Machinery: ORDENT TABLET may cause dizziness and drowsiness; refrain from driving or operating heavy machinery if you experience these symptoms.
    • Children: This medication is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents below 18 years of age.
    • Antibiotic Resistance: Complete the full course of treatment to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.
    • Photosensitivity: The medication may cause increased sensitivity to sunlight or UV radiation.
  • Storage: Store ORDENT TABLET in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, typically below 25°C or 30°C. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions

What is Ordent Tablet used for?

Ordent Tablet is a combination antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections in various parts of the body. These include infections of the teeth, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, urinary tract, genital tract, skin, soft tissues, eyes, ears, blood, brain, and reproductive system. It is also effective in treating diarrhea caused by mixed infections in adults and can be used to prevent infections during surgical procedures, particularly in colon and gynecological operations.

How does Ordent Tablet work?

Ordent Tablet contains two active ingredients: Ofloxacin and Ornidazole. Ofloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, thereby stopping bacterial growth. Ornidazole is another antibiotic that interferes with protein synthesis and damages the DNA of parasites and bacteria, leading to their cell death. Together, these components effectively combat both bacterial and parasitic infections.

What is the usual dosage for Ordent Tablet?

The exact dosage and duration of treatment for Ordent Tablet are determined by your doctor based on your specific condition. It is generally recommended to take the tablet with food at a fixed time each day for better efficacy. It is crucial not to exceed the prescribed dosage and to complete the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection and prevent resistance.

What are the possible side effects of Ordent Tablet?

Common side effects of Ordent Tablet may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, dizziness, headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), itching, vaginal inflammation, dry mouth, and changes in taste sensation. Most of these side effects are usually mild and may resolve on their own. However, more serious side effects, such as tendon pain, swelling, inflammation (tendonitis), or even tendon rupture, can occur. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, or signs of an allergic reaction like rashes, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention.

Is Ordent Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Ordent Tablet is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medication. In life-threatening situations, a doctor may weigh the risks and benefits. If a breastfeeding mother takes Ordent Tablet, breastfeeding may need to be discontinued, and the infant should be monitored for potential side effects such as diarrhea and yeast infection if breastfeeding is resumed after treatment.

Can Ordent Tablet be taken with other medications?

It is important to inform your doctor about all other medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal remedies, to avoid potential drug interactions. Ordent Tablet can interact with various medications, including antacids (which should not be taken within two hours before or after Ordent Tablet), cimetidine, NSAIDs (pain relievers, which can increase the chance of fits), theophylline (for asthma), warfarin (blood thinner, which may increase bleeding risk), certain antipsychotics, cyclosporine, quinidine, lithium, tricyclic antidepressants, and macrolides.

What precautions should be taken while using Ordent Tablet?

Several precautions should be observed when taking Ordent Tablet. You should complete the entire prescribed course of treatment even if you start feeling better. Avoid consuming alcohol, as it can enhance dizziness and drowsiness. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery if you experience dizziness or drowsiness. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, kidney or liver problems, epilepsy, central nervous system disorders, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), diabetes, or a history of tendon problems, as these may require special caution or dose adjustment. Ordent Tablet is generally not recommended for children under 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose of Ordent Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose of Ordent Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Ordent Tablet be stored?

Ordent Tablet should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, typically at temperatures below 30ºC. Keep the medicine in its original container or pack, tightly closed, and ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children and pets. Dispose of any unused medicine properly, as instructed.
