AZRO 500MG TAB is an antibiotic medication manufactured by GOAPPTIV PVT LTD-DIV. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics, specifically the azalide subclass, and is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Azithromycin (500 mg)
Uses AZRO 500MG TAB is prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections, including:
- Respiratory Tract Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and sinusitis.
- Ear Infections: Including acute otitis media.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Like acne, rosacea, cellulitis, and other skin conditions.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Specifically non-gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, and also gonorrhea.
- Typhoid Fever.
- Other Infections: It can also treat infections of the blood, brain, lungs, bones, joints, urinary tract, stomach, and intestines.
Dosage and Administration AZRO 500MG TAB can be taken with or without food, though taking it with food may help reduce stomach upset. It should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not broken, crushed, or chewed. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by a doctor, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the infection from returning or developing antibiotic resistance.
- Adults:
- Typically, 500 mg once daily orally for 3 days.
- Alternatively, 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on days 2-5 for a total of 4 days.
- For STIs caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, a single 1 gm dose or 500 mg once on day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily for the next 2 days, may be given.
- Children (over 6 months): Dosage is usually 10 mg/kg body weight once daily for 3 days. Specific dose ranges by weight are also available.
- Typhoid Fever: 500 mg once daily for 7-10 days.
Side Effects Common side effects are usually temporary and may include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain or stomach cramps
- Diarrhea (can be severe and persistent)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Flatulence
- Skin rashes
- Indigestion
Serious side effects, though rare, include allergic reactions (sudden wheeziness, difficulty breathing, swelling of eyelids, face/throat/tongue, rash, itching), prolonged QT interval, and cholestatic jaundice.
Precautions
- Allergies: Do not take if allergic to Azithromycin or any other macrolide antibiotics (e.g., erythromycin, clarithromycin).
- Liver Problems: Use with caution and inform your doctor if you have liver disease or a history of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction, as Azro 500MG TAB could worsen the condition.
- Kidney Problems: No dose adjustment is typically required for renal impairment, but inform your doctor.
- Heart Conditions: Exercise caution if you have heart problems, a prolonged QT interval, or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia), or low potassium or magnesium levels.
- Myasthenia Gravis: This medicine may worsen symptoms of myasthenia gravis.
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor. Pregnancy category is B, meaning animal studies showed no harm to the fetus, but controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Azithromycin is present in breast milk in low levels, so caution is advised for nursing mothers.
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol while taking AZRO 500MG TAB as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and could potentially harm liver function.
- Drug Interactions:
- Absorption is lessened by food and antacids (containing aluminum or magnesium).
- Avoid concurrent use with ergot alkaloids (e.g., ergotamine) due to potential for ergotism.
- Macrolides can raise plasma levels of cyclosporin and digoxin.
- May interact with antiarrhythmic medications like amiodarone and dofetilide.
- Has not been found to interact with Warfarin, Theophylline, Carbamazepine, Methylprednisolone, or Cimetidine in some studies.
- Sunlight Exposure: AZRO 500MG TAB can make skin sensitive to sunburn; use protective clothing or sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) when outdoors.
- Children: Not recommended for children less than 6 months of age or weighing less than 45 kg, unless specifically prescribed by a doctor.

Frequently asked questions
Here are frequently asked questions about AZRO 500MG Tablet:
What is AZRO 500MG Tablet used for?
AZRO 500MG Tablet, containing Azithromycin, is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. These include respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, and sinusitis. It is also effective against skin and soft tissue infections (like acne and rosacea), ear infections (like otitis media), and sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea. It is important to note that AZRO 500MG Tablet does not treat viral infections like the flu or common cold.
How does AZRO 500MG Tablet work?
AZRO 500MG Tablet works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It does this by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of the bacteria, which inhibits protein synthesis—a crucial process that bacteria need to grow and multiply. This action either slows the growth of the bacteria or sometimes kills them, helping the body's immune system clear the infection.
What is the usual dosage of AZRO 500MG Tablet?
The usual adult dose of AZRO 500MG Tablet is 500mg once a day. The duration of treatment can vary from 3 to 10 days, depending on the type and severity of the infection. For some infections, a higher single dose of 1g or 2g might be prescribed. Dosage for children is based on body weight and must be determined by a doctor. It's crucial to follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration.
What are the possible side effects of AZRO 500MG Tablet?
Common side effects of AZRO 500MG Tablet include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain or discomfort, headache, and dizziness. Less common but serious side effects can include severe allergic reactions (such as rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face/throat/tongue, difficulty breathing), changes in heart rhythm (QT prolongation), and liver problems (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine). If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, contact your doctor immediately.
Is AZRO 500MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, AZRO 500MG Tablet is generally considered safe if prescribed by a doctor when the benefits outweigh the risks. However, other antibiotics might be more suitable depending on the infection. If breastfeeding, AZRO 500MG Tablet passes into breast milk in small amounts, and it is generally considered safe if your doctor or health visitor confirms your baby is healthy. Monitor the breastfed infant for potential side effects like diarrhea, rash, or upset stomach. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Can AZRO 500MG Tablet be taken with other medications?
AZRO 500MG Tablet can interact with several medications. It's important to inform your doctor about all medicines, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal remedies, and supplements you are taking.
- Antacids: Do not take antacids containing aluminum or magnesium (e.g., Maalox, Mylanta) at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after taking AZRO 500MG Tablet, as they can reduce its absorption.
- Heart medications: Azithromycin can interact with antiarrhythmics (e.g., amiodarone, sotalol) and digoxin, increasing the risk of heart rhythm problems or increased digoxin levels.
- Blood thinners: Caution is advised with anticoagulants like warfarin, as azithromycin can affect their action.
- Colchicine: Concomitant use with colchicine (for gout) can increase the risk of colchicine toxicity.
- Ergot derivatives: Should not be taken together due to potential for ergotism.
What precautions should be taken while taking AZRO 500MG Tablet?
Inform your doctor if you have a history of allergies to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics, or if you have liver or kidney problems, heart conditions (especially irregular heartbeats or QT prolongation), or myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disorder). Complete the full prescribed course of the medicine, even if you start to feel better, to prevent the infection from returning and to avoid antibiotic resistance. Avoid alcohol consumption during the course of treatment as it may increase the risk of side effects like dizziness and could potentially harm liver function. It's also recommended to avoid excessive exposure to sunlight as azithromycin may increase the risk of sunburn.
What happens if a dose of AZRO 500MG Tablet is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one. Setting an alarm can help you remember to take your medicine consistently.
How should AZRO 500MG Tablet be stored?
AZRO 500MG Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of sight and reach of children. Generally, it should be stored below 30°C.
