Description
LINAXA E 10MG TABLET
LINAXA E 10MG Tablet, manufactured by Torrent Pharmaceuticals Ltd, is a combination medication for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Composition Each tablet contains:
- Empagliflozin 10 mg
- Linagliptin 5 mg
Uses LINAXA E 10MG Tablet is prescribed for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood sugar control, used in conjunction with a balanced diet and regular exercise. It helps to properly utilize insulin and lower blood sugar levels. Additionally, it may reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and help reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and worsening kidney disease.
Dosage and Administration The recommended dose is one LINAXA E 10MG Tablet (10 mg Empagliflozin and 5 mg Linagliptin) once daily, taken in the morning, with or without food. It is important to take the medicine at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels. Do not discontinue the medication abruptly without consulting a doctor.
Side Effects Common side effects may include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages)
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Cough, rash, itching
- Frequent urination
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other anti-diabetic medications
- Genital fungal infection
- Dizziness or light-headedness
Serious, though less common, side effects can include pancreatitis, ketoacidosis, and necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier's Gangrene).
Precautions
- Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to empagliflozin, linagliptin, or any other ingredient. It is also contraindicated in severe renal impairment, end-stage renal disease, or dialysis, and in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
- General Warnings: Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, a urinary tract infection, or are taking diuretics.
- Alcohol: Limit alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar or dehydration.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for alternative treatment options.
- Interactions: Use with caution when co-administered with insulin or sulfonylureas, as this may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Storage Store LINAXA E 10MG Tablet in a cool, dry place, below 30°C (or between 20-25°C), away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is LINAXA E 10MG TAB used for?
LINAXA E 10MG TAB is a combination medication containing empagliflozin (10mg) and linagliptin (5mg). It is primarily used in adults with Type 2 diabetes mellitus to improve blood sugar control, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. Additionally, the empagliflozin component is indicated to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with Type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. It may also help in reducing the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and worsening kidney disease.
How does LINAXA E 10MG TAB work?
LINAXA E 10MG TAB combines two different mechanisms to lower blood sugar. Empagliflozin works by inhibiting the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys, which reduces the reabsorption of glucose and increases its excretion through urine. Linagliptin is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that increases the levels of natural substances called incretin hormones. These hormones help the pancreas produce more insulin when blood sugar levels are high and also reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver.
What is the usual dosage?
The typical recommended dose for LINAXA E 10MG TAB is one tablet (10mg empagliflozin/5mg linagliptin) once daily. It can be taken in the morning, with or without food. Your doctor may adjust the dose based on your response and needs; however, the dose is generally not more than 25mg empagliflozin and 5mg linagliptin per day.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects of LINAXA E 10MG TAB include urinary tract infections, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), upper respiratory tract infections, frequent urination, cough, rash, itching, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other diabetes medications. Less common but serious side effects can include ketoacidosis, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum (Fournier's gangrene), severe joint pain, dehydration, and allergic reactions (such as anaphylaxis or angioedema).
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
LINAXA E 10MG TAB is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to potential risks to the developing fetus. For breastfeeding, there is limited information, and it is advised to avoid using this medication while breastfeeding an infant, as a risk to the breast-fed child cannot be excluded. If you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding, your doctor will discuss alternative, safer diabetes treatments.
Can it be taken with other medications?
LINAXA E 10MG TAB can be used with other diabetes medications if prescribed by your doctor. However, it is crucial to monitor blood sugar levels closely, as combining it with insulin or sulfonylureas (like glimepiride or glipizide) can increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), potentially requiring a dose reduction of the insulin or sulfonylurea. Taking it with diuretics ("water pills") may increase the risk of dehydration. The effectiveness of linagliptin can be reduced by strong inducers of CYP3A4 or P-gp, such as rifampin. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid possible interactions.
What precautions should be taken?
This medication is not for Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Your kidney function should be assessed before starting treatment and monitored periodically, as LINAXA E 10MG TAB should not be initiated in patients with an eGFR less than 45 mL/min/1.73 m² and is contraindicated in severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/minute/1.73 m²) or if on dialysis. Monitor for signs and symptoms of urinary tract infections, pancreatitis, ketoacidosis, and dehydration. Limit alcohol consumption, as it can affect blood sugar control and increase the risk of side effects like low blood sugar or dehydration. Maintain good genital hygiene to help prevent fungal infections. Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart problems, liver problems, or pancreatitis. Be aware of the possibility of severe joint pain or rare skin reactions. It's also important to stay well-hydrated.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of LINAXA E 10MG TAB and it's 12 hours or more until your next scheduled dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is less than 12 hours until your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should it be stored?
Store LINAXA E 10MG TAB at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
