Frequently asked questions
What is MUCINAC 200 used for?
MUCINAC 200 is primarily used as an adjuvant treatment for acute and chronic broncho-pulmonary conditions characterized by the presence of thick and viscous mucus or mucopurulent secretions. This includes conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema with bronchitis, chronic asthmatic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, asthma with bronchial mucus plugging, bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, bronchiolitis, and pulmonary complications associated with surgery. It is also used in conditions like cystic fibrosis.
How does MUCINAC 200 work?
MUCINAC 200 contains Acetylcysteine (N-acetylcysteine or NAC), which is a mucolytic agent. It works by breaking down the disulfide bonds within the mucoproteins in phlegm (mucus), making the mucus less thick and sticky. This action helps to thin the secretions, making them easier to cough out and clear from the airways. Acetylcysteine also possesses antioxidant properties.
What is the usual dosage for MUCINAC 200?
MUCINAC 200 is typically taken as an effervescent tablet. For acute treatment, the recommended dose is one tablet three times per day. For chronic treatment, the recommended dose is one tablet two to three times per day. The tablet should be dissolved completely in half a glass of water and consumed immediately. It can be taken with or without food. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions regarding dosage and duration.
What are the possible side effects of MUCINAC 200?
Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever, rash, and general gastrointestinal discomfort. More serious but less common side effects may include hypersensitivity reactions such as shortness of breath, tightness of chest, cough, itching, rashes, and a pounding heart rate. Other reported side effects include headache, ringing in the ears, inflamed and sore mouth, diarrhea, and low blood pressure. Rarely, severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported.
Is MUCINAC 200 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
For pregnancy, MUCINAC 200 is generally considered safe if clearly needed and prescribed by a doctor, as there are limited safety data and animal reproduction studies may not always predict human responses. It is classified as a Category B pregnancy drug. Regarding breastfeeding, it is not known if acetylcysteine is excreted in human milk. Therefore, caution should be exercised, and it should only be used if prescribed by a doctor who determines that the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the infant.
Can MUCINAC 200 be taken with other medications?
MUCINAC 200 can be taken concurrently with certain antibiotics like amoxycillin, doxycillin, erythromycin, and thiamphenicol. However, other oral antibiotics or drugs should ideally be administered 1-2 hours apart from MUCINAC 200 to prevent potential interactions with its active component. It is advisable to avoid or use with caution with cough suppressants, certain medicines for high blood pressure, nitroglycerine, and activated charcoal. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking.
What precautions should be taken while using MUCINAC 200?
Always dissolve the effervescent tablet completely in half a glass of water and drink the solution immediately; do not swallow the tablet whole. Avoid mixing other drugs into the same glass of water. Inform your doctor if you have a history of stomach ulcers or asthma, as close monitoring may be required or the condition could worsen. If you experience any difficulty breathing, skin rashes, lesions, or blisters, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids while undergoing treatment. While some sources suggest alcohol is safe, others recommend avoiding it or state the interaction is unknown, so it's generally best to avoid consuming alcohol or consult your doctor. MUCINAC 200 is generally not recommended for children under 2 years of age, or under 14 years by some guidelines, unless specifically advised by a child specialist.
What happens if a dose of MUCINAC 200 is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
How should MUCINAC 200 be stored?
MUCINAC 200 tablets should be stored below 30°C. Protect them from light and moisture, and always keep them out of the reach of children and pets.
