GEMINOR 2 MG TABLET

Geminor 2 MG Tablet, manufactured by Macleods Pharmaceuticals Ltd., is an oral anti-diabetic medication primarily used for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.

  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Glimepiride 2 mg
  • Uses: Geminor 2 MG Tablet is prescribed to lower elevated blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus when diet and exercise alone are insufficient to achieve adequate glycemic control. It may also be used in combination with insulin or other anti-diabetic medicines for better blood sugar management. The medication helps in preventing serious long-term complications associated with diabetes, such as kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, limb amputations, and cardiovascular issues. Glimepiride works by stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin.

  • Dosage and Administration: Geminor 2 MG Tablet should be taken orally once daily, preferably just before or with the first main meal (usually breakfast).

    • The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not be split, crushed, chewed, or dissolved.
    • Typical starting doses are 1 mg or 2 mg once daily.
    • Dosage adjustments are made by a doctor based on individual blood glucose levels, with a maximum recommended dose of 8 mg once daily.
    • It is crucial to take this medicine regularly as prescribed, even if you feel well, and not to stop without consulting a doctor.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common Side Effects: Low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), nausea, dizziness, headache, weight gain, and increased skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity). Symptoms of hypoglycemia can include sweating, shaking, weakness, increased hunger, and an irregular heartbeat.
    • Serious Side Effects: Severe allergic reactions (including inflammation of blood vessels, skin rash, swelling of the face, eyelids, lips, tongue, or throat causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing, and a drop in blood pressure), abnormal liver function (such as jaundice, cholestasis, hepatitis, or liver failure), severe hypoglycemia potentially leading to loss of consciousness or seizures, and a decrease in the number of blood cells (including platelets, white blood cells, and red blood cells).
  • Precautions:

    • Inform your doctor if you have any allergies to glimepiride, sulfonylureas, or sulfonamides.
    • Not recommended for patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver disease, or G6PD deficiency.
    • Caution is advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and it is generally not recommended unless prescribed by a doctor.
    • Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it can interfere with blood sugar control and increase the risk of low blood sugar.
    • Discontinue use under stressful conditions such as fever, trauma, surgeries, or accidents.
    • Inform your doctor about all other medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking, as Geminor 2 MG Tablet can interact with them (e.g., other diabetes medicines, corticosteroids, thyroid medicines, antifungals).
    • Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is advised.
  • Storage: Store Geminor 2 MG Tablet at room temperature, ideally between 15-25°C or below 30°C, in its original package. Keep the medicine away from direct heat, light, and moisture, and out of the reach of children. Ensure to use the medicine before its expiry date.

Frequently asked questions

What is Geminor 2 MG Tablet used for?

Geminor 2 MG Tablet is primarily used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps to lower high blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. It may also be used in combination with insulin or other antidiabetic medications to achieve better blood sugar control and prevent diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, eye problems, and nerve issues.

How does Geminor 2 MG Tablet work?

Geminor 2 MG Tablet contains Glimepiride as its active ingredient. It works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to release more insulin. Additionally, it enhances the sensitivity of the body's tissues to insulin, which helps the cells take up and utilize glucose from the bloodstream, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

What is the usual dosage for Geminor 2 MG Tablet?

The typical starting dose for Geminor 2 MG Tablet is 1 mg or 2 mg, taken once daily with breakfast. The usual maintenance dose ranges from 1 mg to 4 mg once daily, and the maximum recommended dose is 8 mg once daily. Dosage adjustments are made by your doctor based on your blood sugar levels, increasing by no more than 2 mg at 1- to 2-week intervals. It should always be taken with food.

What are the possible side effects of Geminor 2 MG Tablet?

The most common side effect is low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), which can manifest as sweating, dizziness, headache, and shaking. Other possible side effects include nausea, weight gain, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, allergic skin reactions (including sensitivity to sunlight), anemia, and jaundice. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Geminor 2 MG Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Geminor 2 MG Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy as it may harm the unborn baby. Your doctor may switch to insulin therapy if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding because the active ingredient, Glimepiride, may pass into breast milk and could potentially cause low blood sugar in the infant.

Can Geminor 2 MG Tablet be taken with other medications?

Geminor 2 MG Tablet can interact with various medications. Taking it with other antidiabetic medicines (such as metformin, insulin, or certain fluoroquinolones like trovadloxacin, norfloxacin, moxifloxacin, gatifloxacin) may lead to a drastic fall in blood glucose. Other medications like warfarin (a blood thinner), corticosteroids, thyroid medicines (e.g., levothyroxine), and some antibiotics or antifungals (e.g., fluconazole) can also interact, potentially affecting blood sugar control. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while on Geminor 2 MG Tablet?

It is crucial to be aware of the signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) and to carry a fast-acting source of glucose (like candy or fruit juice) to counteract it. Alcohol consumption should be avoided or limited as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar. This medicine is not suitable for Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Caution is advised for individuals with pre-existing liver, kidney, or heart problems, and those with G6PD deficiency or hemolytic anemia should avoid it. Geminor 2 MG Tablet can cause photosensitivity, so use sunscreen or wear protective clothing. It may also cause dizziness, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor.

What happens if a dose of Geminor 2 MG Tablet is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one, as this can lead to dangerously low blood sugar levels.

How should Geminor 2 MG Tablet be stored?

Geminor 2 MG Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight. It is typically recommended to store it below 25°C or 30°C. Always keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
