Description

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET, manufactured by ALKEM LABORATORIES LTD., is a combination medication used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.

Composition Each tablet contains two active ingredients:

  • Dapagliflozin: 10 mg
  • Metformin: 500 mg

Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that works by increasing the excretion of glucose through urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels. Metformin is a biguanide that reduces glucose production in the liver, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and increases the body's sensitivity to insulin.

Uses DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET is prescribed for:

  • Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, particularly when diet and exercise alone are insufficient, or when diabetes cannot be controlled with other medicines.
  • Improvement of blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients.
  • Reduction in the chances of diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, kidney damage, blindness, and amputations.
  • Assistance in cardiovascular well-being and reduction in the risk of hospitalization due to heart failure.
  • Slowing down the progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

Dosage and Administration This medicine should be taken in the dose and duration as advised by your doctor. It is typically taken with food, usually once daily in the morning. The tablet should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken. Taking it at the same time each day is recommended for consistent blood sugar control.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages, cold-like symptoms), female genital mycotic infections, urinary tract infections, diarrhea, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain/upset, loss of appetite, frequent urination, mild skin rash, itchy skin, taste change, flatulence, constipation, back pain, dizziness.
  • Serious Side Effects (requires medical attention): Lactic acidosis (increased risk with alcohol consumption), and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially when used with other antidiabetic medicines or if meals are missed.

Precautions

  • Contraindications: Do not use if allergic to dapagliflozin, metformin, or any other ingredients. It is contraindicated in patients with moderate to severe kidney disease, liver disease, recent heart attack, heart failure, septicemia, severe infection, diabetic ketoacidosis, or uncontrolled diabetes. Not recommended for type 1 diabetes.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It is generally advised to avoid DAPANORM M during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for guidance.
  • Alcohol: Limit or avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.

  • Hygiene: Maintain good genital hygiene to help prevent fungal infections.

  • Driving: Your ability to drive may be affected if your blood sugar levels are too low or too high.
  • Pediatric and Elderly Use: Not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, or individuals 85 years or older.

Frequently asked questions

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET is a combination medication containing Dapagliflozin (10 mg) and Metformin (500 mg), primarily used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd.

What is DAPANORM M used for?

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults, in conjunction with diet and exercise, when other medicines or diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar levels. It helps to improve blood sugar control and also reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications such as heart attack, kidney damage, blindness, and amputations. Additionally, the dapagliflozin component offers cardiovascular and renal benefits, lowering the likelihood of hospitalization due to heart failure and slowing the progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients.

How does DAPANORM M work?

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET combines two active ingredients: Dapagliflozin and Metformin.

  • Dapagliflozin (10 mg) is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works in the kidneys by blocking SGLT2, which prevents glucose from being reabsorbed back into the bloodstream from the urine. This leads to increased excretion of glucose through the urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
  • Metformin (500 mg) is a biguanide that reduces glucose production in the liver and decreases the absorption of glucose from the intestines. It also enhances the body's sensitivity to insulin, leading to increased uptake and utilization of glucose by peripheral tissues.

Together, these mechanisms help to effectively control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

What is the usual dosage?

The correct dosage of DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET is determined by your doctor based on your individual health condition. It is crucial to take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Typically, it is taken once or twice daily with food to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort and enhance absorption. Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break it. Consistency in taking the medicine at the same time each day is important for optimal blood sugar control.

What are the possible side effects?

While taking DAPANORM M, some common side effects may occur, including:

  • Nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal passages and throat, often described as cold-like symptoms)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Female genital mycotic (fungal) infections
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain and loss of appetite
  • Increased urination

Less common or more serious side effects can include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when taken with other antidiabetic medications like insulin or sulfonylureas. A rare but serious side effect associated with metformin is lactic acidosis, which requires immediate medical attention. If you experience any persistent or severe side effects, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly during the second and third trimesters. It is advised to avoid this medicine if you are pregnant, and your doctor may suggest alternative medications. For breastfeeding women, DAPANORM M should not be taken as it may pass into breast milk, and its effects on the infant are not fully known. Always consult your doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can it be taken with other medications?

DAPANORM M can interact with certain medications. It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking or plan to take.

  • Diuretics (water pills) such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide may increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure when taken with DAPANORM M.
  • Antihypertensive medicines like amlodipine or lisinopril, when taken with DAPANORM M, could lead to a further decrease in blood pressure.
  • Insulin and insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas) can increase the risk of extremely low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) if used concurrently.
  • Corticosteroids or atypical antipsychotics may alter blood glucose levels, potentially reducing the effectiveness of DAPANORM M.
  • Avoid using DAPANORM M if you are undergoing an X-ray with certain injectable dyes known as iodinated contrast agents, as it may interact negatively.

What precautions should be taken?

Several precautions should be observed while taking DAPANORM M:

  • Blood Sugar Monitoring: Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels as directed by your doctor.
  • Kidney Function: Caution is advised for individuals with kidney disease, and regular monitoring of kidney function is important, especially for those with severe impairment.
  • Liver Health: Exercise caution if you have liver problems, and inform your doctor about any history of liver issues.
  • Hydration: Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially during situations that may lead to fluid loss, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or excessive sweating, to prevent dehydration.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Limit or avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and low blood sugar.
  • Genital Hygiene: Maintain good genital hygiene to help prevent fungal infections, which are a common side effect.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any history of heart failure, severe infections, or a history of bladder cancer.
  • Driving: Your ability to drive or operate machinery may be affected if your blood sugar levels become too low or too high.

DAPANORM M is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those under 18 years of age.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of DAPANORM M, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should it be stored?

Store DAPANORM M 10 MG/500 MG TABLET at a cool temperature, ideally below 25°C, and ensure the temperature does not exceed 30°C. Keep the medicine in a place protected from excess moisture, light, and heat. Always keep this medicine out of the reach of children and pets. It is important to use the tablet before its expiry date.
