JALRA 50MG Tablet

Name

Common Name: Vildagliptin Brand Name: JALRA 50MG Tablet

Composition

Each tablet contains Vildagliptin 50 mg as the active ingredient.

Uses

JALRA 50MG Tablet is prescribed for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It is used to help control blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. It can be used as a monotherapy or in combination with other anti-diabetic medications, including metformin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin. It works by increasing the release of insulin from the pancreas and decreasing the hormones that raise blood sugar levels, thereby reducing fasting and post-meal sugar levels.

Dosage and Administration

The dose will be determined by a healthcare professional based on the patient's condition and blood sugar levels. It can be taken with or without food. For once-daily dosage, it is typically taken in the morning. If prescribed twice daily, doses are usually taken in the morning and evening. It should be taken at the same time each day for optimal benefit. For patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment or end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily. Do not chew, crush, or break the tablet; swallow it whole with a glass of water.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include hypoglycemia (low blood glucose level), tremor, headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and nasopharyngitis. Serious, though less common, side effects can include liver disease (hepatitis) and angioedema. Patients should be aware of hypoglycemia symptoms such as lightheadedness, sweating, and confusion, and carry sugary food or juice to manage them.

Precautions

JALRA 50MG Tablet is not recommended for individuals with Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with liver impairment, including those with pre-treatment elevated liver enzymes, should not use JALRA. Caution is advised for patients with kidney disease, heart disease (especially NYHA functional class III-IV), or a history of acute pancreatitis. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Dizziness may occur, so caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function may be advised by the doctor.

Storage

Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of sight and reach of children. Store at temperatures below 30°C.

Frequently asked questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about JALRA 50MG TAB:

What is JALRA 50MG TAB used for?

JALRA 50MG TAB is an antidiabetic medicine used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps to control high blood sugar levels, especially in patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled by diet and exercise alone. By managing blood sugar, it helps prevent serious complications of diabetes such as kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and heart attack or stroke.

How does JALRA 50MG TAB work?

JALRA 50MG TAB contains vildagliptin, which belongs to a class of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors. It works by preventing the breakdown of certain chemical messengers called incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP). These hormones are released after meals and stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin when needed, while also decreasing glucagon production by the liver. This combined action helps to lower both fasting and post-meal blood sugar levels.

What is the recommended dosage for JALRA 50MG TAB?

The dosage of JALRA 50MG TAB varies depending on the individual's condition and whether it's taken alone or with other medications. The maximum daily dose is typically 100 mg. When taken as monotherapy, or in combination with metformin, a thiazolidinedione, or insulin, the recommended daily dose is 100 mg, usually administered as 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening. If used in dual combination with a sulfonylurea, the recommended dose is often 50 mg once daily in the morning. For patients with moderate or severe kidney disease or those undergoing dialysis, the recommended dose is 50 mg once daily. It can be taken with or without food. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions for dosage and timing.

What are the possible side effects of JALRA 50MG TAB?

Common side effects of JALRA 50MG TAB can include low blood glucose levels (hypoglycemia), headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, constipation, tremor, and nasopharyngitis (common cold symptoms). Symptoms of low blood sugar may include sweating, dizziness, dry mouth, fast heartbeat, and trembling. More serious, but rare, side effects can include acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and liver dysfunction. You should contact your doctor if side effects persist or worsen, or if you experience severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the skin, or dark urine.

Is JALRA 50MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

JALRA 50MG TAB is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy. There is limited information on its safety in pregnant women, and animal studies have shown reproductive toxicity at high doses. Similarly, it is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding because it is unknown if vildagliptin is excreted in human milk, though animal studies have shown excretion in milk. It is advised to consult a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Can JALRA 50MG TAB be taken with other medications?

JALRA 50MG TAB can be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medicines like metformin or insulin. However, its hypoglycaemic effect may be reduced by certain active substances, including thiazides, corticosteroids, thyroid products, and sympathomimetics. Clinically relevant pharmacokinetic interactions were not observed when vildagliptin was co-administered with amlodipine, ramipril, valsartan, or simvastatin. Caution is advised if taken with digoxin. Inform your doctor about all medicines and supplements you are taking, as it may interact with antipsychotics, corticosteroids, medicines for glaucoma, cardiac stimulants, and thyroid medicines.

What precautions should I take while using JALRA 50MG TAB?

Several precautions should be taken when using JALRA 50MG TAB. It is not a substitute for insulin and should not be used for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients with severe kidney or liver disease should not use JALRA 50MG TAB, and those with moderate kidney impairment may require dose adjustments. There is a risk of developing pancreatitis; inform your doctor if you experience persistent severe abdominal pain. If you feel dizzy, avoid driving or operating machinery. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is crucial, especially when combined with other antidiabetic medications, as it may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Patients with a history of heart disease should also inform their doctor. Avoid alcohol consumption as it can interfere with blood glucose levels.

What should I do if I miss a dose of JALRA 50MG TAB?

If you miss a dose of JALRA 50MG TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the forgotten tablet.

How should JALRA 50MG TAB be stored?

JALRA 50MG TAB should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. The medicine should be stored at a temperature below 25°C or below 30°C and protected from moisture. Do not use the medicine after its expiry date.
