Frequently asked questions
What is Elocon Cream used for?
Elocon Cream is a potent topical corticosteroid used to alleviate the redness, swelling, itching, and discomfort associated with various inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and dermatitis.
How does Elocon Cream work?
Elocon Cream contains mometasone furoate, an active ingredient that works by reducing the body's inflammatory response. It does this by inhibiting the production of certain chemical messengers (like prostaglandins) that cause redness, swelling, and itching in the skin. It suppresses the immune response in the affected area, thereby decreasing inflammation and preventing allergic reactions and irritation.
What is the usual dosage for Elocon Cream?
For adults and children aged 2 years and above, a thin layer of Elocon Cream should be gently rubbed into the affected skin area once a day. It is not recommended for children under 2 years of age. Do not use the cream on your face for more than 5 days, or on children, on any part of their body, for more than 5 days. Avoid using large amounts on extensive body areas for prolonged periods.
What are the possible side effects of Elocon Cream?
Common side effects include a burning sensation, stinging, itching, irritation, dryness, and thinning of the skin (atrophy) at the application site. Other reported side effects can include allergic skin reactions, bacterial and secondary skin infections, acne, inflammation or infection of hair follicles, loss of skin color, tingling, excessive hair growth, stretch marks, and blurred vision. If you experience severe skin irritation, blurred vision, eye pain, or symptoms of high blood sugar (increased thirst, increased urination, dry mouth, fruity breath odor), contact your doctor immediately.
Is Elocon Cream safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Elocon Cream is classified as Pregnancy Category C. It should only be used during pregnancy if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus, as animal studies have shown potential fetal damage with potent corticosteroids. It is not known if the active ingredient passes into breast milk, so caution should be exercised. If prescribed while breastfeeding, avoid applying the cream to the breast area to prevent contact with the infant.
Can Elocon Cream be taken with other medications?
It is generally unlikely that other topical medicines will significantly affect how mometasone skin treatments work. However, it's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking medicines for HIV (such as ritonavir or cobicistat), fungal infections (such as itraconazole), or other medications that contain steroids (e.g., other eczema creams, asthma inhalers, steroid tablets, injections, nasal sprays, or eye/nose drops). No specific drug-drug interaction studies have been conducted with Elocon Cream, but there are some known interactions with other medications, including 1 major and 49 moderate interactions.
What precautions should be taken when using Elocon Cream?
Do not use Elocon Cream if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any other ingredients in the cream. Avoid using it on skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, skin atrophy (thinning), dermatitis around the mouth, genital itching, nappy rash, cold sores, chickenpox, shingles, warts, ulcerated skin, wounds, or other skin infections. Do not cover the treated area with bandages or other occlusive dressings unless specifically advised by your doctor, as this can increase absorption and the risk of side effects. Avoid applying the cream to your face, underarms, or groin area unless directed by your doctor. Also, avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, or vagina. Prolonged use, especially in children, can potentially affect hormone levels and growth, so strictly follow your doctor's instructions.
What happens if a dose of Elocon Cream is missed?
If you miss a dose of Elocon Cream, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Elocon Cream be stored?
Elocon Cream should be stored at room temperature, typically below 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Keep the cream and all medicines out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use Elocon Cream after the expiry date printed on the carton and tube.
