EMPAHOPE 10 Tablet

Name: EMPAHOPE 10 (brand name)

Composition: EMPAHOPE 10 contains Empagliflozin 10 mg as its active ingredient. Empagliflozin belongs to the class of medications called SGLT2 inhibitors.

Uses: EMPAHOPE 10 Tablet is primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps improve blood sugar (glucose) control when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. By managing blood sugar levels, it helps prevent and reduce diabetic complications such as eyesight problems (retinopathy), kidney problems (nephropathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), diabetic foot ulcers, and delayed wound healing. Additionally, EMPAHOPE 10 is also used to treat chronic kidney disease in adults with reduced kidney function and can help protect kidneys from losing function. It can also be used in the treatment of heart failure.

Dosage and Administration: EMPAHOPE 10 should be taken as directed by your doctor. It is usually taken once daily, preferably in the morning, with or without food. The tablet should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not chewed, crushed, or broken. It is important to take it at the same time each day to help remember. Do not stop taking EMPAHOPE 10 abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this may increase blood sugar levels and risk complications.

Side Effects: Common side effects of EMPAHOPE 10 include frequent urination, urinary tract infections, and female genital yeast infections (vaginal mycosis). Other potential side effects may include dizziness, light-headedness, increased thirst, cough, rash, itching, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially when used with other antidiabetic medicines, alcohol, or if meals are delayed or missed.

Precautions: EMPAHOPE 10 is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus or severe kidney or liver disease. Use with caution in elderly patients and those with existing kidney or liver problems, low blood pressure, or if taking diuretics. It is important to stay well-hydrated, especially during hot weather or physical activity, and maintain good personal hygiene to reduce the risk of infections. Inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking to avoid possible interactions. Pregnancy and breastfeeding status should be discussed with a doctor, as limited data suggests it may be unsafe during these periods.

Storage: EMPAHOPE 10 should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from sunlight, at room temperature (10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC). Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

EMPAHOPE 10 TAB contains Empagliflozin 10 mg, which belongs to a class of medications called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Empagliflozin 10 mg:

What is Empagliflozin 10 mg used for?

Empagliflozin 10 mg is primarily used to lower blood sugar levels in adults and children aged 10 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus, alongside diet and exercise. It is also prescribed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. Additionally, it helps reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure and cardiovascular death in adults with heart failure, and to slow the progression of kidney disease and reduce the risk of related cardiovascular events and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease.

How does Empagliflozin work?

Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called SGLT2. This action prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream, leading to increased glucose excretion in the urine. This process helps to lower blood sugar levels. It also reduces sodium and fluid in the body, which contributes to its benefits in heart failure and chronic kidney disease by reducing strain on the heart and kidneys.

What is the usual dosage for Empagliflozin 10 mg?

The recommended starting dose for Empagliflozin is typically 10 mg once daily. It is usually taken orally in the morning, with or without food. Your doctor may adjust your dose based on your condition and response to treatment, but it is generally not more than 25 mg per day for type 2 diabetes.

What are the possible side effects of Empagliflozin?

Common side effects include genital yeast infections (more common in females), urinary tract infections, and dehydration, which can lead to dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up. More serious but less common side effects can include diabetic ketoacidosis (a serious condition where too much acid builds up in the blood), acute kidney injury, and a rare bacterial infection called Fournier's gangrene affecting the area around the genitals.

Is Empagliflozin safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Empagliflozin is generally not recommended during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy due to potential risks to the developing baby's kidneys. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss alternative treatment options with your doctor. It is also not usually recommended during breastfeeding because it is unknown how much of the medication passes into breast milk and the theoretical risk to an infant's developing kidneys.

Can Empagliflozin be taken with other medications?

Yes, Empagliflozin can be taken with other diabetes medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, and insulin, as well as various cardiovascular medications like statins and ACE inhibitors. However, caution is advised when taking it with diuretics ("water pills"), insulin, or sulfonylureas, as this can increase the risk of dehydration or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Your doctor may need to adjust the doses of these other medications. It can also interact with lithium.

What precautions should be taken while on Empagliflozin?

It is important to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially during exercise or hot weather, to prevent dehydration. You should also be monitored for signs of urinary tract infections, genital infections, and diabetic ketoacidosis. Empagliflozin is not for people with type 1 diabetes. Your doctor may advise temporarily stopping the medication before certain surgeries or if you experience severe illness, vomiting, or diarrhea.

What happens if a dose of Empagliflozin is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is less than 12 hours until your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

How should Empagliflozin 10 mg be stored?

Empagliflozin should be stored in a closed container at room temperature, typically between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C). Keep the medication away from heat, moisture, and direct light, and do not freeze it. Always store medicines out of the reach of children.
