LOMOFEN + TABLET (20 TAB) by RPG LIFE SCIENCES LIMITED

Name

  • Brand Name: Lomofen Plus Tablet
  • Common Name: Loperamide Tablet

Composition Lomofen Plus Tablet contains Loperamide Hydrochloride IP 2 mg as its active ingredient.

Uses Lomofen Plus Tablet is an anti-diarrhoeal medication primarily used to treat diarrhoea. It is indicated for:

  • Acute and chronic diarrhoea.
  • Diarrhoea associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Reducing the volume of discharge from ileostomies. It works by slowing down an overactive bowel, allowing for increased absorption of water and salts. It is not used for all types of diarrhoea, such as those with blood in the stool or caused by antibiotic use or bacterial infection.

Dosage and Administration Lomofen Plus Tablet should be taken orally as directed by a doctor. For adults, the usual initial dosage is 4 mg, followed by 2 mg after each loose stool, with a maximum of 16 mg per day. It can be taken with or without food. It is generally prescribed for adults and children above 12 years of age.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness

Serious side effects, though rare, can include severe allergic reactions, severe skin blisters (Stevens-Johnson's Syndrome), or a bloated tummy which may indicate megacolon.

Precautions

  • Avoid use if you have diarrhoea with blood in your stool (dysentery), severe constipation, or diarrhoea caused by bacterial infection or severe diarrhoea after taking antibiotics.
  • Exercise caution in patients with liver disease or AIDS, as side effects like dizziness and drowsiness may be intensified.
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before use, as it is generally not recommended.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or drowsiness; therefore, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, especially oral rehydration solutions (ORS), to compensate for fluid loss due to diarrhoea.

Storage Store Lomofen Plus Tablet in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. Do not store it in the fridge or freezer.

Frequently asked questions

LOMOFEN + TABLET: Frequently Asked Questions

LOMOFEN + TABLET, containing Loperamide, is an anti-diarrhoeal medication used to manage various forms of diarrhea. Here are some frequently asked questions about this medicine:

What is LOMOFEN + TABLET used for?

LOMOFEN + TABLET is primarily used to treat acute diarrhea, including cases caused by food poisoning or viral infections. It is also prescribed for managing acute episodes of diarrhea associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in adults aged 18 years and over, as well as diarrhea related to inflammatory bowel disease and to reduce the volume of discharge from ileostomies. It can also be used for traveler's diarrhea.

How does LOMOFEN + TABLET work?

LOMOFEN + TABLET contains Loperamide, which works by acting on the internal intestinal lining to reduce the movement and contractions of the intestines. This slowing down of intestinal activity allows more time for water and salts to be absorbed back into the body, leading to firmer and less frequent stools. It also helps increase control over bowel movements.

What is the usual dosage of LOMOFEN + TABLET?

For adults with acute diarrhea, the usual initial dose is 4 mg (two tablets), followed by 2 mg (one tablet) after each loose stool. The maximum daily dose should not exceed 16 mg (eight tablets). For IBS-associated diarrhea in adults (18 years and over), follow your doctor's specific instructions. LOMOFEN + TABLET is generally not recommended for children under 12 years of age, though it may be used with caution in children over 12 for short-term diarrhea as directed by a doctor. It should not be used for more than 5 days; consult your doctor if symptoms persist beyond this period.

What are the possible side effects of LOMOFEN + TABLET?

Common side effects may include headache, nausea, constipation, flatulence (gas), stomach pain, vomiting, dizziness, and drowsiness. If these side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor. In rare cases, more serious side effects can occur, such as a bloated tummy (which could indicate a severe bowel condition like megacolon), allergic reactions (swelling of the face, throat, or tongue, difficulty breathing, dizziness), severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson Syndrome), fever, itching, or joint pain. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects.

Is LOMOFEN + TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

LOMOFEN + TABLET is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the first three months, as there is limited information on its effects in human pregnancy. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or suspect you might be pregnant, consult your doctor before taking this medicine. Loperamide, the active ingredient, passes into human breast milk, so it is not recommended for use while breastfeeding. Always discuss the potential risks and benefits with your doctor.

Can LOMOFEN + TABLET be taken with other medications?

LOMOFEN + TABLET can interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor if you are taking ritonavir (anti-HIV), quinidine (for malaria or heart rhythm disorders), itraconazole or ketoconazole (for fungal infections), gemfibrozil (for high cholesterol), or oral desmopressin (for excessive urination), as these can increase the levels of Loperamide in your blood. It is also advised to avoid taking it with MAOIs (a type of antidepressant), other anticholinergic medications (like diphenhydramine), or other opioid medications, as this can increase the risk of side effects like drowsiness. Do not use LOMOFEN + TABLET if your diarrhea is caused by antibiotics or a bacterial infection, or with other anti-diarrheal preparations like bismuth subsalicylate.

What precautions should be taken while using LOMOFEN + TABLET?

It is crucial to stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids while experiencing diarrhea. Do not take LOMOFEN + TABLET if you are allergic to Loperamide or any of its components. Avoid this medicine if you have diarrhea with blood in your stools or high fever, severe diarrhea after taking antibiotics, constipation, bowel blockage, stomach bloating, or a bacterial infection. Use with caution and consult your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, AIDS (especially if your stomach becomes swollen), heart conditions, or intolerance to certain sugars. Since it can cause dizziness or sleepiness, avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medicine affects you. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided as it can increase these side effects.

What happens if a dose of LOMOFEN + TABLET is missed?

If you miss a dose of LOMOFEN + TABLET, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should LOMOFEN + TABLET be stored?

LOMOFEN + TABLET should be stored at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, in a cool and dry place. Protect it from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. Always keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
