Description

ASCABIOL Emulsion 120 ML by Abbott Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.

Name

  • Brand Name: ASCABIOL Emulsion

Composition

ASCABIOL Emulsion contains a combination of two active ingredients:

  • Cetrimide (0.1% w/v)
  • Gamma Benzene Hexachloride (1% w/v), also known as Lindane

Uses

ASCABIOL Emulsion is a topical medication used for the treatment of various parasitic skin conditions.

  • Scabies: It is primarily used to manage scabies, a contagious and intensely itchy skin condition caused by tiny mites (Sarcoptes scabiei) that burrow into the skin. The emulsion works by paralyzing and killing these mites and their eggs, providing relief from itching, swelling, and redness.
  • Lice Infestations: It is also effective in managing head lice and pubic lice infestations, by paralyzing and eliminating the lice and their eggs.
  • Antiseptic properties: Cetrimide, one of its components, acts as an antiseptic, helping to prevent secondary infections and soothe irritated skin.

Dosage and Administration

ASCABIOL Emulsion is for external use only.

  • Application: Shake the bottle well before use. Clean and dry the affected area before applying. Gently apply a thin layer of the emulsion to the affected areas, covering the entire body from the neck down in cases of scabies.
  • Duration: The emulsion should typically be left on the skin for 8 to 12 hours (or up to 14 hours in some cases) before being washed off completely with warm water.
  • Frequency: A single application is often sufficient for scabies, but a healthcare professional might advise repeating the treatment after 7 to 8 days to kill any newly hatched mites.
  • Important Notes: Avoid contact with eyes, nose, and mouth. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Do not apply to open, broken, or cracked skin. Avoid using oil, shampoo, or soap one hour before application and while washing off the medicine.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Itching
  • Temporary stinging or burning sensation
  • Redness of the skin
  • Dry skin
  • Skin rash
  • Irritation
  • Tingling and numbness of the skin
  • Dizziness (in some cases)

Most of these side effects are temporary and resolve over time. However, if they persist or worsen, medical advice should be sought.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to Cetrimide, Gamma Benzene Hexachloride (Lindane), or any other components of the emulsion.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor about any history of seizures, epilepsy, alcoholism, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, crusted scabies, liver disease, or HIV. It is contraindicated in patients with severely damaged skin.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before using if pregnant or breastfeeding. It is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clearly necessary. If used while breastfeeding, avoid applying to the breast or other large areas that may come into contact with the infant.
  • Children: Use with caution in infants and young children, especially those under 2 years, as there is an increased risk of systemic absorption. For very young children, specific application times (e.g., 6-12 hours) and precautions like wrapping hands to prevent accidental ingestion are recommended. It should not be used in newborns under one month old except in absolute necessity.
  • External Use: Strictly for external use; do not swallow.
  • Environmental Control: To prevent re-infestation, it is crucial to wash all recently used clothing, underwear, bedding, and towels thoroughly in hot water or dry-clean them. Non-washable items can be sealed in a plastic bag for at least 3-8 days.

Storage

  • Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight.
  • Keep out of reach and sight of children and pets.
  • Store at room temperature, ideally between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC.
  • If the product freezes, immerse the vial in warm water.
Frequently asked questions

ASCABIOL 120 ML by ABBOTT HEALTHCARE PVT. LTD. is an emulsion primarily used to treat parasitic skin infestations such as scabies and lice. It contains active ingredients that work to eliminate the causative microorganisms and alleviate associated symptoms like itching and irritation.

What is ASCABIOL used for?

ASCABIOL Emulsion is primarily used for the treatment of scabies, a contagious skin condition caused by microscopic mites, and for pediculosis, which includes infestations of head lice and body lice. It also helps in preventing secondary skin infections that may arise from scratching or skin damage due to these infestations.

How does ASCABIOL work?

ASCABIOL typically contains a combination of active ingredients, often Lindane (Gamma Benzene Hexachloride) and Cetrimide, or Benzyl Benzoate. Lindane acts as an insecticide and anti-parasitic agent by paralyzing and killing the mites and lice, including their eggs, by disrupting their nervous system. Cetrimide functions as an antiseptic, cleaning the skin and preventing secondary bacterial infections. Benzyl Benzoate, another active ingredient found in some formulations, also exerts a neurotoxic effect on parasites, leading to their paralysis and death.

What is the usual dosage and application method?

ASCABIOL is for external use only. For scabies, it's typically applied to the entire body, excluding the face, after a bath or shower. The emulsion is massaged into the skin until absorbed. It should be left on for 8-12 hours (some sources suggest up to 24 hours) before being washed off thoroughly with warm water. For autumnal trombidiosis (chiggers), it can be applied to the lesions with a cotton swab 1-2 times. The specific frequency and duration depend on the condition and your doctor's advice. It's important to shake the bottle well before use.

What are the possible side effects?

Common side effects can include itching, temporary stinging or burning sensation, redness, skin rashes, and dry skin at the application site. Most of these are mild and temporary. More serious but rare side effects can include skin blistering, tingling, numbness, or seizures, especially with excessive use or if absorbed systemically. If you experience persistent or severe side effects, consult your doctor.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

ASCABIOL is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless considered clearly necessary and advised by a doctor. Limited information is available on its effects during pregnancy, and it can pass into breast milk. If used while breastfeeding, avoid applying it to the breast or large skin areas that could come into contact with the infant.

Can it be taken with other medications?

There are no well-documented drug-drug interactions specific to Benzyl Benzoate, one of the active ingredients. However, it is always advised to inform your doctor about all other medicines you are using, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, especially other topical treatments, to minimize the risk of skin irritation. Some sources mention potential interactions with antipsychotics, antidepressants, theophylline, cyclosporine, certain antibiotics, antimalarials, and antituberculosis drugs with formulations containing Gamma Benzene Hexachloride.

What precautions should be taken?

ASCABIOL is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and other mucous membranes. Rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs. Do not apply to open wounds, broken, or severely damaged skin. Exercise caution in individuals weighing less than 50 kg, infants, young children (especially under 2 years), and the elderly. Inform your doctor if you have a history of seizures, epilepsy, liver disorders, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, or HIV. A patch test on a small skin area for 10 minutes is recommended before general application to check for excessive stinging.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next scheduled application, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Do not over-apply the medicine to compensate for a missed dose.

How should it be stored?

Store ASCABIOL Emulsion in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, at room temperature (between 10°C and 30°C or 20°C - 25°C). Keep it out of reach and sight of children and pets.
