Frequently asked questions

GLIMY-3 Tablet is an oral anti-diabetic medicine manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. It contains Glimepiride (3mg) as its active ingredient. This medication is primarily used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults.

What is GLIMY-3 Tablet used for?

GLIMY-3 Tablet is used to lower high blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It is prescribed when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control blood sugar. It can also be used in combination with insulin or other diabetes medications to achieve better glycemic control and help prevent serious diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, nerve problems, blindness, and loss of limbs.

How does GLIMY-3 Tablet work?

GLIMY-3 Tablet contains Glimepiride, which belongs to a class of medicines called sulfonylureas. It works by stimulating the beta cells in the pancreas to release more insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar (glucose) from the blood into the body's cells, where it is used for energy, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

What is the usual dosage of GLIMY-3 Tablet?

The typical starting dose of GLIMY-3 Tablet is 1 mg or 2 mg once daily, taken with breakfast. The usual maintenance dose ranges from 1 mg to 4 mg once daily, with a maximum recommended dose of 8 mg once daily. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your blood sugar levels and individual needs, and this dosage may be adjusted over time. It is crucial to take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor and not to exceed the recommended amount.

What are the possible side effects of GLIMY-3 Tablet?

Common side effects of GLIMY-3 Tablet include low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), nausea, headache, dizziness, weakness, and weight gain. Less common side effects can include flu-like symptoms, allergic skin reactions (rash, hives, sensitivity to sunlight), and stomach upset. If you experience symptoms of low blood sugar such as sweating, dizziness, headache, or shaking, immediately consume a fast-acting source of glucose like candy or fruit juice. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is GLIMY-3 Tablet safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

GLIMY-3 Tablet is generally not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester, as it may harm the unborn baby. It is a pregnancy Category C medicine, meaning there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are taking it during pregnancy, your doctor may switch you to insulin therapy. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers, as it is not known if the medicine passes into breast milk and could cause low blood sugar in the infant. Discuss all risks and benefits with your doctor.

Can GLIMY-3 Tablet be taken with other medications?

GLIMY-3 Tablet can interact with various other medications. It can be taken along with other diabetes medications as prescribed by your doctor. However, it's essential to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking, as some interactions can cause serious side effects, including an increased risk of hypoglycemia. For instance, certain blood pressure tablets, pain killers, and blood thinners may interact with GLIMY-3 Tablet.

What precautions should be taken with GLIMY-3 Tablet?

Several precautions should be taken while using GLIMY-3 Tablet:

  • Hypoglycemia: Be aware of the signs of low blood sugar (e.g., sweating, dizziness, headache, shaking) and always carry a source of sugar to counteract it.
  • Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol consumption, as it can significantly increase the risk of low blood sugar.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, heart disease, thyroid disease, G6PD deficiency, or a history of hemolytic anemia, as these conditions may require dose adjustments or alternative treatment.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: GLIMY-3 Tablet can cause dizziness or affect concentration due to fluctuating blood sugar levels, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Sun Sensitivity: This medicine can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight; use sunscreen or wear protective clothing.
  • Type 1 Diabetes: GLIMY-3 Tablet is not for Type 1 Diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of GLIMY-3 Tablet, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How should GLIMY-3 Tablet be stored?

GLIMY-3 Tablet should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. The typical storage temperature is below 30°C or between 10°C to 25°C.
