Frequently asked questions
TOPCORT CREAM 15GM by CIPLA HEALTH LIMITED is a topical corticosteroid medication used to treat various inflammatory and itchy skin conditions. It contains Mometasone (0.1% w/w) as its active ingredient.
What is Topcort Cream used for?
Topcort Cream is primarily used to reduce redness, swelling, and itching associated with skin problems such as psoriasis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), and other corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. It can also manage scalp psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis.
How does Topcort Cream work?
Topcort Cream contains mometasone, a topical steroid that functions by decreasing inflammation. It achieves this by blocking the production of chemical messengers, such as prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing red, swollen, and itchy skin during allergic reactions or irritation. By inhibiting these inflammatory mediators, the cream helps alleviate symptoms and promote healing.
What is the usual dosage of Topcort Cream?
Topcort Cream should be used for local application on the affected skin area as advised by your doctor. Typically, a thin film of the cream is applied once or twice daily. The duration of use is generally up to 4 weeks, and it should not be used for longer periods without consulting a doctor. For children, it is not recommended for those under 2 years of age, and prolonged or extensive use should be avoided as it may affect hormonal balance. Do not rub the medicine vigorously onto the skin, and avoid using it on the face for extended periods without medical consultation.
What are the possible side effects of Topcort Cream?
Common side effects include mild to moderate itching, a burning or stinging sensation on the skin, dryness, folliculitis (inflamed hair follicles), mild skin thinning (atrophy), and acne-like eruptions. More serious, but rare, side effects can include allergic skin reactions, bacterial or secondary skin infections, stretch marks, and, with prolonged and extensive use, potential hormonal imbalances or worsening of psoriasis. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, or signs of infection, consult your doctor.
Is Topcort Cream safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: The use of Topcort Cream during pregnancy should only be done if clearly necessary and as per a doctor's advice. Adequate safety data for mometasone use during pregnancy is limited. Application on large body surface areas or for prolonged periods should be avoided.
Breastfeeding: It is generally not recommended for use in breastfeeding women. If use is advised by a doctor, especially for high doses or long periods, breastfeeding might need to be discontinued. Do not apply the cream near the breast or nipple area. If you need to use fluticasone cream while breastfeeding, wash off any cream from your breasts or nipples before feeding your baby.
Can Topcort Cream be taken with other medications?
As Topcort Cream is applied topically, systemic drug interactions are generally minimal. However, using other creams that contain corticosteroids on the same skin area can increase the risk of side effects. It is advised not to use any other topical medicine without your doctor's advice.
What precautions should be taken while using Topcort Cream?
Avoid using Topcort Cream if you have rosacea, acne, skin atrophy (thinning skin), dermatitis around the mouth, itching in private parts, wounds, nappy rash, or certain skin infections (viral, bacterial, fungal). Do not apply it in or around your eyes. Avoid covering the treated area with bandages or occlusive dressings unless specifically instructed by your doctor, as this can increase medication absorption and the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve within two weeks.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you forget to apply Topcort Cream at the suggested time, apply it as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular schedule. Do not apply a double amount to make up for a missed dose.
How should it be stored?
Topcort Cream should be stored below 25°C or at room temperature, ideally below 30°C. Keep it out of sight and reach of children. Ensure the tube is tightly closed to prevent air exposure and do not use it after the expiry date.
