Frequently asked questions
What is Eucalmin Capsule used for?
Eucalmin Capsule is primarily used for managing bone and joint health, treating low calcium levels (hypocalcaemia), and addressing vitamin and calcium deficiencies in adults. It is also used to manage post-menopausal osteoporosis and can help prevent and treat osteoarthritis. Additionally, it supports red blood cell formation and promotes nerve health.
How does Eucalmin Capsule work?
Eucalmin Capsule works through its combination of active ingredients. Calcitriol, a form of Vitamin D3, helps the body absorb calcium from the stomach. Calcium is crucial for the growth and development of strong bones and teeth. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) contribute to joint health, have anti-inflammatory properties, and may offer cardioprotective benefits. Folic Acid and Methylcobalamin are important for red blood cell production, nerve regeneration, and maintaining nerve cell conduction. Boron is essential for bone matrix formation and bone mineralization.
What is the usual dosage for Eucalmin Capsule?
For adults, the average dose is one capsule once daily. For the treatment of post-menopausal osteoporosis, the recommended dosage is one capsule twice daily. The capsule should be swallowed whole with a glass of water and not chewed or crushed.
What are the possible side effects of Eucalmin Capsule?
Common acute side effects can include decreased appetite, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation. Some individuals may also experience burping or diarrhea. A frequently reported adverse reaction is hypercalcaemia (high calcium levels in the blood). Chronic effects may involve muscular weakness, weight loss, sensory disturbances, fever, thirst, excessive urination (polydipsia, polyuria), dehydration, apathy, growth retardation, and urinary tract infections.
Is Eucalmin Capsule safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The safety of Eucalmin capsules during pregnancy has not been definitively established, and it falls under Pregnancy Category C, meaning it should be used only if the benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus. Calcitriol, an ingredient in Eucalmin, may pass into breast milk. If breastfeeding, mothers may continue taking Eucalmin capsules, provided that the serum calcium levels of both the mother and infant are monitored. It is advised to consult a doctor before use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Can Eucalmin Capsule be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential drug interactions. You should avoid taking additional calcium supplements without consulting your doctor to prevent excessive calcium intake. Eucalmin Capsule may interact with diuretics, digitalis, antacids, anticonvulsants, and other vitamin D compounds. It can also enhance the effects of blood-thinning medications like warfarin and aspirin, increasing the risk of bleeding. Blood pressure medications might have enhanced effects, potentially leading to hypotension. Some studies suggest contraceptive drugs may reduce the effectiveness of omega-3 supplements, and orlistat can reduce the absorption of omega-3 fatty acids.
What precautions should be taken while taking Eucalmin Capsule?
Do not take Eucalmin Capsule if you have a known hypersensitivity to calcitriol or any other components, or if you have conditions associated with high calcium levels (hypercalcaemia), severe renal failure, metastatic calcification, or vitamin D toxicity. It is crucial to avoid other vitamin D compounds during treatment. Monitor your calcium intake to prevent hypercalcaemia, and if you have renal failure, maintain normal plasma phosphate levels. Staying hydrated by avoiding dehydration and maintaining adequate fluid intake is also important. Patients are advised to have a minimum daily dietary intake of 600 mg of calcium.
What happens if a dose of Eucalmin Capsule is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should Eucalmin Capsule be stored?
Eucalmin Capsule should be stored protected from light and moisture, at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. It should be kept out of reach of children.
