  • Bacterial and Parasitic Infections: Effective against a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections in various organs.
  • Intestinal and Hepatic Infections: Such as amoebiasis (amoebic dysentery) and giardiasis.
  • Genitourinary Infections: Including trichomoniasis (in women and men), bacterial vaginosis, and chlamydiosis.
  • Anaerobic Bacterial Infections: Including septicaemia, meningitis, peritonitis, post-operative wound infections, puerperal sepsis, septic abortion, and endometritis.
  • Infections of Specific Body Parts: Used for infections of the liver, stomach, intestines, vagina, brain, heart, lungs, skin, urinary tract, and genital areas.
  • Surgical Prophylaxis: To prevent infections during and after surgical procedures, especially those involving the colon and gynecological operations.
  • Other Infections: Also used in the treatment of dental infections, leg ulcers, and pressure sores.

Dosage and Administration

ORNIDA TAB should be taken orally, preferably after eating food, at the same time each day to maximize benefits. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as advised by your doctor, even if symptoms improve, to ensure complete eradication of the infection and prevent resistance.

  • The exact dosage and duration will depend on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight.
  • Typical Adult Dosages: For conditions like amoebiasis, dosages may range from 500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days. For acute trichomoniasis, a single dose of 1.5 g may be prescribed, or 500 mg twice daily for 5 days in chronic cases, with concomitant treatment of sexual partners.

Side Effects

  • Common Side Effects: Headache, dryness in the mouth, metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset/abdominal pain, dizziness, loss of appetite, skin rashes, itching, sleeplessness, and fatigue.
  • Serious/Rare Side Effects: Leucopenia (low white blood cell count), and neurological issues such as vertigo, seizures, nerve pain, tremor, rigidity, coordination impairments, temporary loss of consciousness, and sensory or mixed peripheral neuropathy. Abnormal liver function has also been reported. Immediate medical attention is required if serious side effects occur.

Precautions

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Ornidazole or any other components of the tablet.
  • Liver and Kidney Impairment: Use with caution in patients with kidney or liver diseases, as dose adjustments and close monitoring of organ function may be necessary.
  • Nervous System Disorders: Caution is advised for patients with central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as epilepsy, seizure disorders, or multiple sclerosis, due to an increased risk of adverse effects.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before taking ORNIDA TAB if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Alcohol Consumption: Avoid alcohol during treatment with ORNIDA TAB and for at least 2-3 days after completing the course, as it can lead to unpleasant side effects like nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: ORNIDA TAB may cause dizziness, sleepiness, or blurred vision. Patients should exercise caution when driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking, especially muscle relaxants (e.g., vecuronium bromide), oral anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), lithium, cimetidine, phenytoin, and phenobarbital, as interactions may occur.
  • Antibiotic Resistance: Do not self-medicate or stop taking the medicine prematurely, as this can lead to antibiotic resistance.
  • Prolonged Use: High doses or prolonged use of Ornidazole can increase the risk of nerve damage.
  • Hemodialysis: Patients undergoing hemodialysis may require an additional dose as advised by a physician.

Storage

Store ORNIDA TAB below 30°C or at room temperature.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ornida Tab used for?

Ornida Tab, containing Ornidazole, is an antibiotic medicine primarily used to treat various bacterial and parasitic infections. These include amoebiasis (intestinal and liver infections), giardiasis, trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted infection), bacterial vaginosis, chlamydiosis, and other vaginal, urinary tract, intestinal, and post-operative infections. It is also used to prevent infections after surgery, and in the treatment of dental infections, leg ulcers, and pressure sores. Ornida Tab is not effective against viral infections like the common cold or flu.

How does Ornida Tab work?

Ornidazole, the active ingredient in Ornida Tab, belongs to a class of antibacterial medications called 'nitroimidazoles'. It works by entering the cells of anaerobic bacteria or protozoa and undergoing a reduction process. This process generates reactive intermediates and free radicals that damage the DNA of the infection-causing agent, inhibiting its growth and ultimately leading to cell death.

What is the usual dosage of Ornida Tab?

The dosage of Ornida Tab varies depending on the type and severity of the infection, as well as the patient's age and weight. For adults and children weighing over 35kg, a common dose might be three 500mg tablets taken in the evening for one to three days, or one to two 500mg tablets in the morning and evening for three to ten days. For children weighing 35kg or less, the dose is typically 25mg to 40mg per kg body weight once daily for up to 10 days. In cases like trichomoniasis, a single dose of 1.5g is sometimes administered, or 500mg twice daily for 5 days, with treatment often extended to sexual partners. It is crucial to take Ornida Tab exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually with or immediately after a meal to avoid stomach upset.

What are the possible side effects of Ornida Tab?

Common side effects of Ornida Tab may include nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, and taste disturbances (often a metallic taste). These side effects are usually mild and tend to resolve over time. Less common but more serious side effects can include sleepiness/tiredness, confusion, disorientation, tremor, rigidity, poor coordination, seizures, temporary loss of consciousness, numbness or tingling in fingers or toes, skin reactions (rash, itching), and rarely, leucopenia (low white blood cell count). If any side effects are persistent, severe, or concerning, it is important to contact your doctor immediately.

Is Ornida Tab safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Ornida Tab should be used with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is generally not recommended in early pregnancy or for nursing mothers unless absolutely necessary and the potential benefits clearly outweigh the risks, as there is limited clinical data on its effects. Ornidazole can pass into breast milk, and while the amount may be low, experts have varying opinions on its use during longer-term breastfeeding due to potential mutagenicity and carcinogenicity concerns, similar to related drugs. It is crucial to consult your doctor to discuss the risks and benefits before taking this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can Ornida Tab be taken with other medications?

Ornida Tab can interact with certain other medications. It may potentiate the effect of coumarin-type oral anticoagulants (blood thinners like warfarin), requiring more frequent monitoring of INR. It can also prolong the muscle relaxant effect of drugs like vecuronium bromide. Caution is advised when co-administering Ornidazole with lithium, cimetidine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, and 5-fluorouracil, as interactions can occur, such as increased lithium levels or reduced clearance of fluorouracil. It is important to inform your doctor about all current medications, including over-the-counter products, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions.

What precautions should be taken?

Several precautions should be taken when using Ornida Tab:

  • Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption during treatment with Ornidazole and for at least three days after the treatment, as it may cause a disulfiram-like reaction (e.g., flushing, rapid heartbeat) and can worsen dizziness and sleepiness.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of CNS diseases (such as epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, or peripheral neuropathy), liver impairment, or kidney problems, as the dosage may need adjustment or the medicine might be contraindicated.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: Ornidazole may cause dizziness and sleepiness, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
  • Allergies: Do not take Ornidazole if you have a known allergy to Ornidazole or any other nitroimidazole derivatives.
  • Complete the Course: It is essential to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully cleared and to prevent antibiotic resistance.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose of Ornida Tab, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you have trouble remembering your doses, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

How should it be stored?

Ornida Tab should be kept in its blister pack until it is time to take them, as removing them from the packaging can affect their stability. Store the tablets in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays below 30°C. Protect them from light. Do not store this medicine in a bathroom, near a sink, in a car, or on window sills, as heat and dampness can degrade medicines. Keep Ornida Tab out of reach of young children, ideally in a locked cupboard at least one-and-a-half meters above the ground.
