Frequently asked questions
PANKURA 40MG TAB contains the active ingredient Pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid.
What is PANKURA 40MG TAB used for?
PANKURA 40MG TAB is used to treat acid-related conditions of the stomach and intestine. These include heartburn, acid reflux (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to prevent stomach ulcers and acidity that may occur with prolonged use of painkillers.
How does PANKURA 40MG TAB work?
PANKURA 40MG TAB is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking the "acid pump" within the gastric parietal cells in your stomach, which significantly reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces. This helps to relieve symptoms and promote healing of acid-related damage.
What is the usual dosage for PANKURA 40MG TAB?
For many conditions, the typical dosage is 40mg once a day. It should usually be taken one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning. The exact dosage and duration of treatment will be determined by your doctor based on your specific condition and response to the medicine. For conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, higher doses may be prescribed.
What are the possible side effects of PANKURA 40MG TAB?
Common side effects can include headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, flatulence (gas), and dizziness. If these effects persist or become bothersome, consult your healthcare provider. Long-term use (more than 3 months) may lead to low magnesium levels in the blood, and use for over a year may increase the risk of bone fractures and vitamin B12 deficiency.
Is PANKURA 40MG TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pantoprazole (the active ingredient) is not usually recommended during pregnancy due to limited information on its use. Your doctor may suggest alternative treatments like omeprazole, which has more safety data. During breastfeeding, pantoprazole passes into breast milk in tiny amounts and is considered unlikely to cause adverse effects in breastfed infants. However, it's important to monitor the baby for any unusual symptoms.
Can PANKURA 40MG TAB be taken with other medications?
PANKURA 40MG TAB can interact with certain medications. It is not recommended with some HIV drugs like atazanavir, nelfinavir, and rilpivirine, as it can reduce their effectiveness. If you are taking warfarin (an anticoagulant), pantoprazole may increase the risk of bleeding. It can also affect drugs whose absorption depends on stomach pH, and may increase methotrexate levels. Antacids can generally be taken concurrently. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using PANKURA 40MG TAB?
Do not chew, crush, or split the tablet; swallow it whole with water. Inform your doctor if you have severe liver issues, a history of allergic reactions to similar medications, or conditions like osteoporosis. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, vitamin B12 deficiency, and a type of severe diarrhea (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea).
What happens if a dose of PANKURA 40MG TAB is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
How should PANKURA 40MG TAB be stored?
PANKURA 40MG TAB should be stored at room temperature, typically below 25°C (77°F), away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep the medicine in a tight, light-resistant container and out of the reach of children.
