NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML by AJANTA PHARMA LTD

NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is an ophthalmic solution prescribed to alleviate pain and inflammation in the eyes, particularly following cataract surgery. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of macular edema in diabetic patients undergoing cataract surgery.

  • Composition: The active ingredient in NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is Nepafenac (0.1% w/v). Nepafenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by blocking the production of certain natural substances called prostaglandins, which are responsible for causing pain, swelling, and redness in the eye.

  • Uses:

    • Relief of eye pain and inflammation after cataract surgery.
    • Reduction of the risk of macular edema and swelling in the back of the eye following cataract surgery in diabetic patients.
  • Dosage and Administration: For adults, the recommended dosage is one drop applied to the affected eye(s) three times daily. It is typically started one day before surgery and continued for two weeks after surgery, or as prescribed by an ophthalmologist.

    • Wash hands thoroughly before use.
    • Tilt the head backward and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket.
    • Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pocket.
    • Close the eyes for 1-2 minutes.
    • Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
    • If using other eye drops, allow at least five minutes between applications.
    • If wearing contact lenses, remove them before using the drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common: Blurred vision, burning or stinging in the eyes, dry eyes, eye irritation, eye discomfort, decreased vision, foreign body sensation in the eye, increased intraocular pressure, eye redness, sensitivity to light, and itching of the eyes.
    • Serious: Persistent or worsening symptoms, vision changes, or signs of an eye infection require immediate medical attention.
  • Precautions:

    • Do not use if allergic to Nepafenac, other NSAIDs (like aspirin or ibuprofen), or any other ingredients.
    • Inform your doctor if you have a history of bleeding disorders or are taking blood thinners, as NEPAFLAM may increase the risk of bleeding.
    • Caution is advised for individuals with NSAID-induced asthma due to the risk of recurrent asthma attacks.
    • Prolonged use may increase the risk of corneal damage or slow healing.
    • Avoid driving or operating machinery if experiencing temporary blurred vision.
    • Not recommended for children under the age of ten.
    • Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Storage: Store below 30°C in a clean and dry place. Keep out of the sight and reach of children. Discard the medicine 4 weeks after first opening.

Frequently asked questions

What is NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML used for?

NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is primarily used to relieve eye irritation, pain, and redness after cataract eye surgery. It is also indicated to reduce the risk of macular oedema (swelling in the back of the eye) that can occur after cataract surgery, especially in diabetic patients.

How does NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML work?

This medicine contains Nepafenac, which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) prodrug. After being instilled into the eye, Nepafenac penetrates the cornea and is converted by ocular tissue enzymes into its active form, amfenac. Amfenac works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, primarily COX-2, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are natural substances in the body that cause pain, redness, and inflammation. By blocking their production, NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML helps to reduce these symptoms.

What is the usual dosage of NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML?

The recommended adult dosage is one drop in the affected eye three times daily. Treatment typically begins one day before cataract surgery, continues on the day of surgery, and for the first two weeks following the procedure, or as directed by your ophthalmologist. It should generally not be used for more than 14 days after surgery unless specifically recommended by your doctor.

What are the possible side effects of NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML?

Common side effects can include blurred vision, vision changes, reduced vision, eye irritation, itching, discomfort, or a temporary stinging or burning sensation in the eyes. More serious but less common side effects can include headache, runny nose, pain or pressure in the face, nausea, vomiting, foreign body sensation in the eye, sensitivity to light, red or bloody eyes, decreased visual acuity, seeing specks or spots, teary eyes, or eye discharge or crusting. If any side effects persist or worsen, you should consult your doctor.

Is NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

During Pregnancy: NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the last three months, as it may potentially harm the fetus. Women who could become pregnant are advised to use appropriate birth control measures during treatment. During Breastfeeding: It should be used with caution and only if prescribed by a doctor, as it is unknown whether the medication passes into breast milk.

Can NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML be taken with other medications?

It is crucial to inform your doctor about all prescription and non-prescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is not recommended for use with certain glaucoma medications like Latanoprost and Travoprost. Caution is advised when used with blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, aspirin) due to an increased risk of bleeding. Concomitant use with other topical NSAIDs (e.g., diclofenac) or steroids (e.g., hydrocortisone) should also be approached with caution as it may increase the potential for healing problems. If you are using other eye drops, instill them at least 5 minutes apart.

What precautions should be taken when using NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML?

This medicine is for ophthalmic (eye) use only. Always wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops. Avoid touching the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the medicine may change the color of the lenses. Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as dry eye syndrome, arthritis, diabetes, or a bleeding/blood-clotting disorder. Do not use NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML if you are allergic to nepafenac or other NSAIDs (like aspirin or ibuprofen) or if they previously caused asthma or a skin allergy. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery immediately after use, as it can cause temporary blurred vision. It is also advisable to avoid excessive sunlight exposure to the eye during treatment.

What happens if a dose of NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

How should NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML be stored?

Store NEPAFLAM EYE DROP 5ML below 30°C in a clean and dry place. Keep it out of sight and reach of children and pets. It is important to discard the bottle 4 weeks after first opening it, even if some medicine remains. Do not use the eye drops if the contents appear discolored, if particles are present, or if the expiry date has passed.
