  • Brand Name: Momate Ointment
  • Common Name: Mometasone Furoate Ointment

Composition

  • Active Ingredient: Mometasone Furoate 0.1% w/w
  • Mometasone furoate is a synthetic corticosteroid known for its anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties.

Uses Momate Ointment is a topical corticosteroid prescribed for the relief of inflammatory and itchy manifestations of various skin conditions. It helps reduce symptoms like swelling, itchiness, and redness associated with:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Dermatitis (including atopic dermatitis)
  • Rashes

Dosage and Administration

  • For external use only.
  • Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected skin area once daily, or as directed by a doctor.
  • Wash hands before and after application (unless treating hands).
  • Do not use more often or for longer than advised by your doctor.
  • Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings (e.g., bandages) unless specifically instructed by a doctor, as this may increase systemic absorption and risk of side effects.
  • Not recommended for children under 2 years of age. For children 2 years and older, use should be limited to the least amount compatible with an effective regimen and for no more than 3 weeks unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

Side Effects Common side effects may include:

  • Burning sensation at the application site
  • Itching
  • Stinging sensation
  • Skin atrophy (thinning of the skin)
  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Acne
  • Hypopigmentation (changes in skin color)

Serious side effects, though rare, can occur, especially with prolonged or extensive use, including adrenal suppression.

Precautions

  • Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, or open wounds.
  • Do not use on the face for prolonged periods without consulting a doctor.
  • Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or other corticosteroids.
  • Exercise caution when using in children, as they may be more susceptible to systemic side effects like growth retardation.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before use, as safe use has not been established and there is potential risk to the fetus.
  • Discontinue use and consult a doctor if irritation or sensitization develops.
  • In the presence of a skin infection, an appropriate antifungal or antibacterial agent should be used concurrently.
  • Avoid using on skin conditions such as rosacea, acne, perioral dermatitis, viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, chickenpox, shingles), fungal infections, and bacterial infections unless specifically advised by a doctor.

Storage

Frequently asked questions

What is Momate Ointment used for?

Momate Ointment, containing Mometasone furoate, is a topical corticosteroid used to treat various inflammatory and itchy skin conditions. These include eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and rashes. It helps reduce symptoms like swelling, redness, and itching associated with these conditions.

How does Momate Ointment work?

Momate Ointment works as a potent corticosteroid by reducing inflammation in the skin. It does this by blocking the production and activity of chemical messengers in the body that are responsible for causing red, swollen, and itchy skin during allergic reactions or irritations.

What is the usual dosage of Momate Ointment?

For adults and children aged 2 years and older, a thin film of Momate Ointment should be applied to the affected area of the skin once daily. The amount needed can sometimes be measured in "fingertip units" – typically, one fingertip unit covers an area twice the size of your handprint. It should not be used for longer periods than advised by a doctor, generally not exceeding 3 weeks, especially in children.

What are the possible side effects of Momate Ointment?

Common side effects at the application site include burning, itching, stinging, irritation, redness, and dryness. Less common or with prolonged use, side effects can include skin thinning (atrophy), stretch marks, acne, boils, and changes in skin color (hypopigmentation). If systemic absorption occurs with extensive or prolonged use, especially in children, it can affect hormone balance.

Is Momate Ointment safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Momate Ointment should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and only when advised by a doctor, as there is definite evidence of risk to the developing baby with extensive application of potent corticosteroids. Very little of the medicine gets into the blood and almost none to the baby when used topically. Breastfeeding: Use Momate Ointment with caution while breastfeeding. It is not known how much mometasone passes into breast milk, but it is likely to be a tiny amount. It's advisable to apply it to the smallest possible area and avoid long-term use. If treating the breasts, wash off any ointment thoroughly before feeding to prevent the baby from ingesting it. Ensure the infant's skin does not come into direct contact with treated areas.

Can Momate Ointment be taken with other medications?

It is very unlikely that other topical medicines will significantly affect the way Momate Ointment works. However, you should inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are using other corticosteroid medications (including creams, inhalers, tablets, or nasal sprays) or medicines that treat HIV (like ritonavir or cobicistat) or fungal infections (like itraconazole), as these might increase systemic exposure to mometasone. Consistent consumption of grapefruit or grapefruit juice should also be avoided, as it may increase systemic exposure.

What precautions should be taken while using Momate Ointment?

Momate Ointment is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and open wounds. Do not apply it to the face for prolonged periods without medical advice (usually no more than 5 days), nor on broken or infected skin, rosacea, acne, nappy rash, or around genital/perianal areas unless specifically directed by a doctor. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings or bandages unless advised by your doctor, as this can increase absorption and the risk of side effects. It is not recommended for children under 2 years of age, and long-term use in children should be avoided as it may interfere with growth and development.

What happens if a dose of Momate Ointment is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double amount or use it twice in one day to make up for a missed application.

How should Momate Ointment be stored?

Momate Ointment should be stored in a cool and dry place, protected from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat. The storage temperature should generally not exceed 25°C or 30°C. Do not refrigerate or freeze the ointment. Keep it in its original container with the cap tightly closed after each use, and out of the reach of children and pets. Discard any remaining ointment in an opened tube after 12 weeks.
