Description
DAPLO M 5
DAPLO M 5 is a medication manufactured by DR REDDY'S LABORATORIES LTD, primarily used for the management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults.
Composition Each tablet of DAPLO M 5 contains two active ingredients:
- Dapagliflozin (5 mg): This belongs to the class of Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. It works by blocking the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, leading to the excretion of excess glucose through urine, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
- Metformin (500 mg): This is a biguanide antidiabetic medicine. It reduces glucose production in the liver, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin.
Uses DAPLO M 5 is prescribed for:
- Treating Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
- Lowering high blood sugar levels.
- Reducing the risk of heart disease in diabetic patients.
- Slowing the progression of kidney disease in diabetic patients.
- Assistance in weight management in some patients.
- It can also be used in combination with other diabetes medications like insulin or GLP-1 receptor agonists for better blood sugar control.
Dosage and Administration
- DAPLO M 5 is typically taken orally, usually once daily, preferably with food, especially the first main meal.
- It is recommended to take the tablet at the same time each day to maintain consistent blood levels.
- Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush, chew, or break it.
- The dosage is determined by your doctor based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Do not alter the dosage or stop the medication without consulting your doctor. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it's almost time for the next dose; in that case, skip the missed dose.
Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, weakness, fatigue, skin rash, itching, metallic taste, upper respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, increased thirst, increased urination, and genital infections (in both men and women). Nasopharyngitis (common cold symptoms like runny nose, sore throat) may also occur.
- Serious Side Effects (Seek immediate medical attention if experienced): Symptoms of lactic acidosis (e.g., severe stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, difficulty breathing, low body temperature, low blood pressure), ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, liver problems, kidney problems, dehydration, and angioedema.
Precautions
- Contraindications: Do not take DAPLO M 5 if you are allergic to dapagliflozin, metformin, or any other ingredients. It is also not recommended for patients with severe renal impairment or those undergoing dialysis, metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis), hepatic impairment, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, severe infection, dehydration, recent heart attack, heart failure, hypoxemia, or uncontrolled diabetes.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally, DAPLO M 5 is not recommended during pregnancy (especially the second and third trimesters) or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for alternative treatment options.
- Alcohol: Avoid or limit alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of lactic acidosis and worsen your diabetic condition.
- Driving and Operating Machinery: Your ability to drive or operate machinery may be affected if your blood sugar levels are too low or too high, or if you experience dizziness.
- Other Warnings: Inform your doctor about any pre-existing medical conditions (e.g., heart, kidney, liver disease), urinary tract infections, or if you are taking other medications, including diuretics, insulin, sulfonylureas, carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, or medicines that reduce metformin clearance (e.g., ranolazine, vandetanib, dolutegravir, cimetidine). Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is crucial. Maintain good genital hygiene to prevent fungal infections. This medication is generally for adults aged 18 years and older and not recommended for those 85 years or older.
Storage Store DAPLO M 5 in a cool, dry place at room temperature (10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC), away from moisture and heat. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
DAPLO M 5, manufactured by Dr Reddy's Laboratories Ltd, is a combination medication primarily used for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains two active ingredients: Dapagliflozin and Metformin. This medication is often prescribed when diet and exercise alone are insufficient to control blood sugar levels, or when other diabetes medications don't provide adequate control.
Here are some frequently asked questions about DAPLO M 5:
What is DAPLO M 5 used for?
DAPLO M 5 is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps to control high blood sugar levels, which can reduce the risk of serious diabetes complications. It may also help reduce the risk of heart disease and may contribute to weight loss in some individuals.
How does DAPLO M 5 work?
DAPLO M 5 combines two distinct mechanisms of action:
- Dapagliflozin is a Sodium-Glucose Co-Transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. It works by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream, leading to the excretion of excess glucose through urine and thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
- Metformin is a biguanide that primarily decreases glucose production in the liver and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin, allowing cells to utilize glucose more effectively. This dual action provides a comprehensive approach to managing blood sugar.
What is the usual dosage of DAPLO M 5?
The typical starting dose is usually one tablet daily, taken orally. Your doctor may adjust the dosage based on your response to treatment and tolerance. It can be taken with or without food, but it is often recommended to take it at the same time each day, preferably with your first main meal, to maintain consistent blood levels and minimize gastrointestinal side effects. It should be swallowed whole and not crushed, split, or chewed.
What are the possible side effects of DAPLO M 5?
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, increased urination, increased thirst, and fatigue. Some individuals may also experience urinary tract infections and genital infections. In rare cases, more serious side effects like ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, liver or kidney problems, dehydration, and lactic acidosis can occur.
Is DAPLO M 5 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
DAPLO M 5 is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to insufficient safety data and potential risks to the unborn baby's kidney development. Similarly, it is not advised during breastfeeding as it may pass into breast milk and could affect the infant's developing kidneys. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
Can DAPLO M 5 be taken with other medications?
DAPLO M 5 can interact with certain other medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. Notable interactions include:
- Insulin and insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas): May increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
- Diuretics (water pills): May increase the risk of dehydration and low blood pressure.
- Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (e.g., acetazolamide): May increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Medicines that reduce metformin clearance (e.g., ranolazine, cimetidine): May increase metformin accumulation.
What precautions should be taken with DAPLO M 5?
- Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and worsen side effects.
- Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels and kidney function as directed by your doctor.
- Maintain good hydration by drinking plenty of fluids, especially due to increased urination.
- Practice good hygiene, particularly in the genital area, to prevent infections.
- Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, heart problems, severe infections, or a history of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- DAPLO M 5 is not recommended for individuals with type 1 diabetes.
What happens if a dose of DAPLO M 5 is missed?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose (typically within 12 hours for a once-daily medication), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should DAPLO M 5 be stored?
Store DAPLO M 5 in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. The medication should be stored at room temperature, typically between 20-25°C.
