- Dosage may be gradually increased by a doctor after several weeks if no clinical improvement is observed.

- Caution is advised with other CNS active drugs, lithium, antipsychotics (like haloperidol, clozapine), and anticonvulsants (like phenytoin, carbamazepine).
- Co-administration with Linezolid can also lead to serotonin syndrome.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have diabetes, liver problems, kidney problems, a history of seizures (epilepsy), glaucoma, heart problems, or a history of mania/bipolar disorder.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the last 3 months, as it may harm the unborn baby. Use with caution during breastfeeding as it is excreted in human milk. Consult a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption as it may aggravate side effects like dizziness, drowsiness, and increased heart rate.
- Activities requiring alertness: May cause side effects like dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
- Suicidal Thoughts: Depressed patients, especially young adults, should be carefully supervised during treatment due to the risk of suicidal thoughts.

Frequently asked questions
PRODEP CAPS by SUN PHARMA-SYMENTA DIV FAQs
What is Prodep Capsule used for?
Prodep Capsule is an antidepressant medicine primarily used to treat major depressive episodes. It is also prescribed for mental health conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder), and panic disorder, including those with or without agoraphobia. In some cases, it may also be used to manage symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and is used in children and adolescents aged eight years and above for moderate to severe major depressive disorder.
How does Prodep Capsule work?
Prodep Capsule contains Fluoxetine, which belongs to a class of medicines called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It works by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin at the presynaptic neuronal membrane, leading to increased levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger, in the brain. This enhanced serotonin concentration helps to improve mood, relieve anxiety and tension, and alleviate symptoms of panic and obsessive disorders.
What is the usual dosage for Prodep Capsule?
The usual initial dose recommended for adults is 20 mg per day, administered in the morning. If no clinical improvement is observed after several weeks, a dose increase may be considered. Doses above 20 mg/day are typically administered on a twice-daily (morning and noon) schedule and should not exceed a maximum of 80 mg/day. For bulimia nervosa, a daily dose of 60 mg is common. Dosage may be adjusted for patients with impaired kidney or liver function, or for elderly patients, where a maximum recommended dose is 60 mg per day. It is crucial not to change the dose or stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor.
What are the possible side effects of Prodep Capsule?
Common side effects of Prodep Capsule include nausea, indigestion, dry mouth, fatigue, loss of appetite, increased sweating, sinusitis, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), yawning, and abnormal dreams. Other potential side effects can include headache, diarrhea, nervousness, anxiety, decreased libido, delayed ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, blurred vision, frequent urination, and skin rashes. If you experience a sudden worsening of mood or suicidal thoughts, or if any side effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor immediately.
Is Prodep Capsule safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Prodep Capsule is generally considered unsafe to use during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and limited human data suggests potential risks. When taken during the last three months of pregnancy, it may increase the risk of a serious condition in babies called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN).
For breastfeeding, Prodep Capsule is probably unsafe as limited human data indicates the drug may pass into breast milk and could harm the baby. It is important to consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Can Prodep Capsule be taken with other medications?
Prodep Capsule can interact with several medications. Serious reactions, sometimes fatal, have been reported when taken with Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs). It can also affect the levels of lithium, antipsychotics like haloperidol and clozapine, and anticonvulsants like phenytoin and carbamazepine. Combining it with certain drugs like doxepin, dronedarone, cyclobenzaprine, or desvenlafaxine can increase the risk of side effects, including serotonin syndrome. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins, to avoid potential interactions.
What precautions should be taken while taking Prodep Capsule?
Before taking Prodep Capsule, inform your doctor if you have epilepsy (seizure disorder or fits), diabetes, liver or kidney disease, heart problems, or glaucoma. Caution is advised as Prodep can affect glycemic control in diabetics and may precipitate mania in patients with bipolar illness. Alcohol consumption is not recommended during treatment due to the increased risk of side effects like dizziness and drowsiness. Do not discontinue the medicine abruptly, as it can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety and sleep disturbances; dose reduction should be gradual under medical supervision.
What happens if a dose of Prodep Capsule is missed?
If you miss a dose of Prodep Capsule, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should Prodep Capsule be stored?
Prodep Capsule should be stored below 30°C. Keep it in a cool and dry place, protected from light and moisture. Always keep all medicines out of the reach of children.
