BRIMODIN EYE DROP 5 ML

BRIMODIN EYE DROP 5 ML is an ophthalmic solution manufactured by Cipla Health Limited, primarily used to manage elevated intraocular pressure.

Name

  • Brand Name: Brimodin Eye Drop

Composition

  • Active Ingredient: Brimonidine (0.2% w/v)

Uses

Brimodin Eye Drop is prescribed for the treatment of:

  • Ocular Hypertension: A condition where pressure inside the eye is higher than normal.
  • Glaucoma: Specifically open-angle glaucoma, which involves damage to the optic nerve often due to high eye pressure. It helps lower intraocular pressure, reducing the risk of vision loss.

Dosage and Administration

The recommended dose is typically one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily, approximately 8 hours apart.

  • It is for external use only.
  • Wash hands before use.
  • Tilt the head back slightly, pull down the lower eyelid, and squeeze the drop into the eye.
  • Avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface or the eye to prevent contamination.
  • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications.
  • Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Eye itching, burning sensation, and redness (conjunctival hyperemia).
  • Blurred vision.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis, inflammation, or allergic reaction in the eye.
  • Fatigue or drowsiness.

Serious Side Effects: While rare, severe allergic reactions or worsening of pre-existing conditions may occur. Seek immediate medical attention if persistent or severe symptoms arise.

Precautions

  • Children: Not recommended for children under two years of age due to increased risk of serious side effects like slowed heart rate and lowered body temperature. Use with caution in children above two years.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor. Animal studies have shown harmful effects, and it's not known if it's excreted in human milk.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: May cause blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness; exercise caution.
  • Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with depression, severe cardiovascular disease, cerebral or coronary insufficiency, Raynaud's phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension, liver or kidney problems.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, especially tricyclic antidepressants, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and other blood pressure medicines.
  • Do not discontinue use abruptly as it may increase eye pressure.

Storage

Store Brimodin Eye Drop at a temperature below 25°C in a cool and dry place. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Ensure to use within 4 weeks of opening the bottle.

Frequently asked questions

What is Brimodin Eye Drop used for?

Brimodin Eye Drop is primarily used to reduce elevated pressure inside the eye, a condition known as intraocular pressure (IOP). This medication treats conditions such as open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve and subsequent vision loss.

How does Brimodin Eye Drop work?

Brimodin Eye Drop contains Brimonidine, which works as an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It lowers eye pressure through a dual mechanism: initially by decreasing the production of aqueous humor (the clear fluid in the front part of the eye) and, with prolonged use, by increasing the drainage of this fluid from the eye (uveoscleral outflow).

What is the usual dosage for Brimodin Eye Drop?

The typical recommended dosage for Brimodin Eye Drop is one drop in the affected eye(s) three times daily, with doses administered approximately 8 hours apart. It is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions precisely regarding dosage and frequency.

What are the possible side effects of Brimodin Eye Drop?

Common side effects may include eye itching, burning sensation, redness (conjunctival hyperemia), watery eyes, irritation, abnormal taste, blurred vision, dry mouth, and conjunctival folliculosis (small bumps on the inner eyelid). Some individuals may also experience headache, drowsiness, or fatigue. Most of these side effects are temporary. If they persist or worsen, consult your doctor.

Is Brimodin Eye Drop safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Brimodin Eye Drop should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit clearly outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Animal studies have shown some evidence of fetal harm, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are not available. Always consult your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy.

Breastfeeding: Use of Brimodin Eye Drop is generally not recommended during breastfeeding. It is not known whether brimonidine tartrate is excreted in human milk, although it has been shown to be excreted in breast milk in animal studies. Some medical opinions advise against its use due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants. To minimize systemic absorption, apply pressure to the inner corner of the eye for at least one minute after instilling the drops and remove any excess solution with a tissue.

Can Brimodin Eye Drop be taken with other medications?

Brimodin Eye Drop can be used concomitantly with other topical ophthalmic drug products to lower intraocular pressure. However, if more than one eye drop is used, they should be instilled at least 5 to 10 minutes apart to prevent one medicine from washing out the other.

Caution is advised when using Brimodin Eye Drop with certain systemic medications. These include antihypertensives and/or cardiac glycosides (due to potential blood pressure reduction), CNS depressants (like alcohol, barbiturates, opiates, sedatives, or anesthetics, as it may cause an additive or potentiating effect), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and herbal products.

What precautions should be taken while using Brimodin Eye Drop?

Before using Brimodin Eye Drop, remove contact lenses and wait at least 10 to 15 minutes before reinserting them. Avoid touching the tip of the dropper to your eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Do not stop using the eye drops abruptly, as this may lead to an increase in eye pressure. If you experience blurred vision, drowsiness, or fatigue, avoid driving or operating machinery. Use with caution if you have a history of depression, heart problems, cerebral or coronary insufficiency, Raynaud's phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension, or liver/kidney problems. Brimodin Eye Drop is not recommended for children below 2 years of age, and caution is advised for children above 2 years.

What happens if a dose of Brimodin Eye Drop is missed?

If you miss a dose of Brimodin Eye Drop, instill it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply extra drops to compensate for the missed dose.

How should Brimodin Eye Drop be stored?

Store Brimodin Eye Drop in a closed container at room temperature, ideally below 30°C, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Do not freeze the medicine. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use and keep it out of the reach of children. Ensure to use the eye drops within 4 weeks after opening the bottle.
