Description

FERONIA XT DROPS 15 ML by ZUVENTUS HEALTHCARE LTD.

Feronia XT Drops is an iron supplement specifically formulated for pediatric use. It is manufactured by Zuventus Healthcare Ltd..

  • Composition: Each 1 ml of Feronia XT Drops contains Ferrous Ascorbate IP equivalent to Elemental Iron 10 mg and Folic Acid IP 100 mcg.

  • Uses: This medicine is primarily prescribed for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children. It aids in increasing iron absorption and the formation of new red blood cells, thereby boosting hemoglobin levels and reducing associated symptoms like weakness and fatigue. It is also used for iron deficiency resulting from chronic blood loss, low iron intake, or worm infestations.

  • Dosage and Administration: Feronia XT Drops are for oral administration. The dosage varies based on age and medical condition, and should be determined by a healthcare professional. For prevention of iron deficiency, typical pediatric dosages range from 0.5 ml/day for premature infants to 6 ml/day for older children. For treating iron deficiency, full-term infants and children may receive 3 to 6 mg elemental iron/Kg/day in 2 to 3 divided doses, not exceeding 180 mg elemental iron daily. It can be taken with meals to minimize gastrointestinal discomfort, but avoid consuming it with tea, eggs, or milk as these may reduce iron absorption.

  • Side Effects: Common side effects include gastrointestinal irritation such as nausea, epigastric pain, constipation, or diarrhea. Other reported side effects include vomiting, stomach upset, and dark-colored stools. Long-term use may lead to an increased risk of dental caries and blackish discoloration of teeth.

  • Precautions: This medicine contains iron, and an overdose can be fatal, especially for young children, so it must be kept out of their reach. Do not exceed the recommended dose. It is contraindicated in cases of known hypersensitivity to its ingredients, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria, haemosiderosis, haemochromatosis, repeated blood transfusions, or anaemias not caused by iron deficiency. Caution is advised for patients with peptic ulcers, intestinal narrowing, diverticular disease, or difficulty absorbing certain sugars. Feronia XT Drops may interact with certain antibiotics, calcium and magnesium salts, thyroid hormones, and medications for Parkinson's disease, among others.

  • Storage: Store the drops below 25°C. Keep the bottle in its outer carton to protect it from light. Ensure it is kept out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine if the bottle is damaged or after its expiry date.

Frequently asked questions

What is FERONIA XT DROPS used for?

FERONIA XT DROPS is primarily used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia in children. It addresses anemia caused by factors such as poor diet, inadequate food absorption, chronic blood loss, or increased folate requirements. It can also be used to manage iron deficiency due to worm infestations.

How does FERONIA XT DROPS work?

FERONIA XT DROPS contains two active ingredients: Ferrous Ascorbate (an iron supplement) and Folic Acid (Vitamin B9). Iron is vital for the formation of hemoglobin and the normal development of red blood cells, which are responsible for carrying oxygen throughout the body. Folic acid is essential for red blood cell synthesis, DNA synthesis, cell division, and overall growth. The ascorbic acid component in Ferrous Ascorbate also helps enhance iron absorption in the body.

What is the usual dosage of FERONIA XT DROPS?

The dosage of FERONIA XT DROPS varies depending on the age of the child and whether it's for prevention or treatment of iron deficiency, and should always be determined by a doctor. For prevention of iron deficiency in pediatric populations:

  • 6-24 months of age: 1-2 ml/day
  • 2-5 years of age: 2-3 ml/day
  • 6-11 years of age: 3-6 ml/day
  • Older children: 6 ml/day
  • Premature infants: 0.5 ml/day, with higher doses up to 2mg/kg elemental iron per day potentially needed for exclusively breastfed low birth weight infants, starting 4-6 weeks after birth.

For treatment of iron deficiency in full-term infants and children, the dose is typically 3 to 6 mg elemental iron/Kg/day, given in 2 to 3 divided doses, not exceeding a total daily dose of 180 mg elemental iron.

What are the possible side effects of FERONIA XT DROPS?

Common side effects can include gastrointestinal irritation such as nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, epigastric pain, constipation or diarrhea. Stools may also become darker in color, which is a normal occurrence with iron preparations. Long-term use might increase the risk of tooth decay and cause blackish discoloration of the teeth. Rarely, more severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis or bronchospasm can occur.

Is FERONIA XT DROPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

FERONIA XT DROPS is generally considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding if clinically indicated and prescribed by a doctor. Folic acid is particularly important during pregnancy for the healthy development of the baby's brain and spinal cord. No adverse effects have been observed in breastfed infants of mothers taking ferrous ascorbate.

Can FERONIA XT DROPS be taken with other medications?

Yes, but it's important to be aware of potential interactions. Iron can reduce the absorption of certain medications, including some antibiotics (like tetracyclines, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin), antacids, levothyroxine (for thyroid problems), and medications for Parkinson's disease (like levodopa and entacapone). It's advisable to take FERONIA XT DROPS at least two hours apart from these medications. Avoid taking it with dimercaprol. Additionally, oral iron may reduce the hypotensive effect of methyldopa. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medications your child is taking.

What precautions should be taken while using FERONIA XT DROPS?

It is crucial not to exceed the recommended dose. Keep FERONIA XT DROPS out of the reach and sight of children, as an overdose can be dangerous. This medicine should not be used for anemias other than those caused by iron deficiency. Exercise caution if your child has conditions such as peptic ulcers, narrowing of the intestine, diverticular disease, diabetes, or has had stomach surgery. Maintaining good dental hygiene is recommended with long-term use. Do not stop administering the medicine without consulting your doctor.

What happens if a dose of FERONIA XT DROPS is missed?

If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a forgotten one.

How should FERONIA XT DROPS be stored?

FERONIA XT DROPS should be stored in a cool and dry place, away from direct heat and sunlight, and not above 25°C. Keep the bottle in its outer carton to protect it from light. Always keep it out of the sight and reach of children.
