Description
DUOLIN LD RESPULES
DUOLIN LD RESPULES, manufactured by Cipla Ltd., is a bronchodilator medication used to manage respiratory conditions.
Composition Each 2.5 mL or 3 mL unit-dose vial contains:
- Levosalbutamol Sulphate: 1.25 mg or 0.63 mg
- Ipratropium Bromide: 500 mcg
- Normal Saline Solution, IP: q.s.
Uses DUOLIN LD RESPULES are indicated for the management of symptoms associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It helps to relieve bronchospasm, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath by relaxing and widening the airways in the lungs.
Dosage and Administration DUOLIN LD RESPULES are for oral inhalation only and should be administered by nebulization using a standard jet nebulizer with a face mask or mouthpiece.
- Adults & children more than 12 years: One respule three times a day, every 6 to 8 hours (maximum recommended daily dose).
- Children aged 6-12 years: One respule (3 ml) administered via nebulization three times a day. For children under six, the dosage should be determined by a pediatrician. Do not exceed the recommended dose.
Side Effects Common side effects may include headache, dizziness, cough, sore throat, dry mouth, nausea, stomach pain, shakiness, and nervousness. Serious side effects, though less common, can include paradoxical bronchospasm (worsening of breathing problems), cardiovascular effects (e.g., fast heart rate, chest pain), and immediate hypersensitivity reactions. Seek immediate medical attention if breathing problems worsen or any severe allergic reactions occur.
Precautions
- Hypersensitivity: Do not use if allergic to levosalbutamol, ipratropium bromide, or atropine and its derivatives.
- Medical Conditions: Use with caution in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, bladder-outflow obstruction, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or an overactive thyroid gland.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, especially other anticholinergics, beta-agonists, beta-blockers, diuretics, or medicines for depression (MAOIs, tricyclic antidepressants), as interactions can occur.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult a doctor before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Dizziness/Blurred Vision: May cause dizziness or blurred vision; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.
Storage Store DUOLIN LD RESPULES below 25°C, protected from light. Do not use after the expiration date. Open the foil pouch just prior to administration and keep unused vials in the foil pouch or carton. Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
What is DUOLIN LD RESPULES used for?
DUOLIN LD RESPULES is a combination medication primarily used for the treatment and prevention of symptoms associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which includes conditions like chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It helps alleviate respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and chest tightness by improving airflow to the lungs. It is also used in the management of asthma.
How does DUOLIN LD RESPULES work?
DUOLIN LD RESPULES contains two active ingredients: Levosalbutamol and Ipratropium. Levosalbutamol is a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the airways, causing them to widen. Ipratropium is an anticholinergic agent that blocks certain natural substances in the body, preventing the constriction of the airways. By acting together, these components effectively relax and open the air passages in the lungs, making breathing easier.
What is the usual dosage for DUOLIN LD RESPULES?
For adults and children over 12 years, the typical dosage is one respule (2.5 ml or 3 ml) administered via nebulization three times a day, usually every 6 to 8 hours. The maximum recommended daily dose is one respule three times a day. For children aged 6-12 years, the standard dosage is also one respule (3 ml) administered via nebulization three times a day, but for children under six, the dosage must be determined by a pediatrician based on their weight, age, and medical condition. It is administered by nebulization using a standard jet nebulizer.
What are the possible side effects of DUOLIN LD RESPULES?
Common side effects include dry mouth, cough, throat irritation, headache, dizziness, tremors, palpitations (fast heart rate), muscle cramps, back pain, chest pain, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, taste changes, and a runny or stuffy nose. More serious, though less common, side effects can include a worsening of airway narrowing (paradoxical bronchospasm), which is life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention if breathing problems worsen. It can also cause or worsen a serious eye problem called narrow-angle glaucoma.
Is DUOLIN LD RESPULES safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
During pregnancy, DUOLIN LD RESPULES may be unsafe to use. Limited human studies exist, but animal studies have shown harmful effects on developing babies. Your doctor may prescribe it only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks.
Regarding breastfeeding, it is unknown if the components of DUOLIN LD RESPULES pass into breast milk. While some sources suggest it is probably safe if prescribed, others advise against breastfeeding while taking this medicine or recommend consulting a doctor to decide whether to take the medication or breastfeed, but not both.
Can DUOLIN LD RESPULES be taken with other medications?
Concomitant use of DUOLIN LD RESPULES with certain other medications should be avoided or approached with caution. These include other anticholinergic agents, beta-adrenergic agents, beta-blockers (used for high blood pressure and heart problems), diuretics, digoxin (used for heart problems), MAO inhibitors, or tricyclic antidepressants (used for psychiatric illness), as they may alter the effects of DUOLIN LD RESPULES or increase the risk of side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements you are taking.
What precautions should be taken while using DUOLIN LD RESPULES?
Do not use DUOLIN LD RESPULES if you are allergic to ipratropium bromide, levosalbutamol, atropine, or any of its derivatives. It should be used with caution if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention due to conditions like an enlarged prostate or bladder problems, heart problems (such as coronary insufficiency, cardiac arrhythmias, or high blood pressure), diabetes, epilepsy, an overactive thyroid gland, or cystic fibrosis. If you experience worsening breathing problems or paradoxical bronchospasm, discontinue the medication immediately and seek emergency medical help. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may cause excessive drowsiness or dizziness. It is important not to exceed the recommended dosage. Additionally, rinse your mouth with water after each inhalation to help prevent oral fungal infections. The first dose should ideally be taken under medical supervision. DUOLIN LD RESPULES may cause dizziness or blurred vision, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. It is not generally recommended for children under 12 years of age unless specifically advised by a pediatrician.
What happens if a dose of DUOLIN LD RESPULES is missed?
If you miss a dose of DUOLIN LD RESPULES, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
How should DUOLIN LD RESPULES be stored?
DUOLIN LD RESPULES should be stored below 25°C in a clean and dry place, protected from moisture, direct sunlight, and heat. Do not use the medicine after the expiration date stamped on the container. Open the foil pouch containing the respules just prior to administration, and keep any unused vials in the foil pouch or carton. Always keep DUOLIN LD RESPULES and all other medicines out of the reach of children.
