Frequently asked questions

OFLIN O TAB, manufactured by ZYDUS HEALTHCARE - FORTIZA DIV, is a combination antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial and parasitic infections. It contains Ofloxacin (200 mg) and Ornidazole (500 mg).

Here are some frequently asked questions about OFLIN O TAB:

1. What is OFLIN O TAB used for?

OFLIN O TAB is used to treat a wide range of bacterial and parasitic infections. These include gastrointestinal infections like diarrhea, dysentery, and gastroenteritis, as well as urinary tract infections, respiratory infections (such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis), eye and ear infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain sexually transmitted and gynecological infections. It may also be used as a preventive measure during surgical procedures.

2. How does OFLIN O TAB work?

OFLIN O TAB combines two active ingredients: Ofloxacin and Ornidazole. Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, an enzyme crucial for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent that disrupts the DNA structure and protein synthesis in susceptible organisms, causing cell death in anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Together, these components work synergistically to combat infections.

3. What is the usual dosage for OFLIN O TAB?

The usual dosage of OFLIN O TAB is typically one tablet, taken twice daily, or as prescribed by your doctor. It can be taken with or without food, but taking it with food may help reduce stomach discomfort. It is often recommended to take it on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals. Always swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, and do not crush, chew, or break it. It is crucial to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor, even if your symptoms improve earlier, to ensure the infection is fully eradicated and to prevent resistance.

4. What are the possible side effects of OFLIN O TAB?

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and difficulty falling asleep (insomnia). Other potential side effects may include mild skin rash, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, itching, vaginal inflammation, dry mouth, and changes in taste or smell. If you experience any severe or persistent side effects, or signs of an allergic reaction (like rash, itching, swelling, or breathing difficulties), seek immediate medical attention.

5. Is OFLIN O TAB safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

No, OFLIN O TAB is generally not recommended and is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is due to potential risks to the developing baby or infant. It is essential to consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding, as they will assess the potential risks and benefits in your specific situation.

6. Can OFLIN O TAB be taken with other medications?

OFLIN O TAB can interact with several medications. It should be used with caution or avoided with:

  • Alcohol: Strictly avoid alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after the last dose due to a potential disulfiram-like reaction (severe nausea, vomiting, headache).
  • Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin): May increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Cyclosporine: May lead to increased cyclosporine levels and potential kidney problems.
  • NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen): May heighten the risk of seizures or convulsions.
  • Tricyclic antidepressants: Can increase side effects like dizziness and confusion.
  • Certain heart rhythm medications: Such as quinidine, amiodarone, and sotalol, due to the risk of affecting heart rhythm.
  • Antacids, dairy products, and calcium-fortified juices: These can reduce the effectiveness of OFLIN O TAB if taken at the same time. It's advisable to take the medicine a few hours before or after consuming these. Always inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking to avoid potential interactions.

7. What precautions should be taken while using OFLIN O TAB?

  • Allergies: Do not take OFLIN O TAB if you are allergic to Ofloxacin, Ornidazole, or any quinolone or nitroimidazole antibiotics.

  • Driving & Machinery: This medication may cause dizziness or fatigue, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
  • Sun Exposure: OFLIN O TAB may increase sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and use protective measures.
  • Tendon Problems: There is a risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, especially in older patients and those with a history of tendon issues. Report any tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation to your doctor.

8. What happens if a dose of OFLIN O TAB is missed?

If you forget to take a dose of OFLIN O TAB, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
