Description
GLYCIPHAGE VG2
Name: Glyciphage-VG2 Tablet SR, Glyciphage VG2 Tablet. Manufactured by FRANCO ZINDA (Franco Indian Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd.).
Composition: Glyciphage VG2 contains a combination of three active ingredients:
- Glimepiride (2mg)
- Metformin (500mg)
- Voglibose (0.2mg)
Uses: Glyciphage VG2 is prescribed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. It helps control high blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are insufficient. The medicine works by increasing insulin release from the pancreas (Glimepiride), reducing glucose production in the liver and improving insulin sensitivity (Metformin), and delaying carbohydrate absorption from the intestines (Voglibose). It also helps reduce the risk of serious diabetes complications such as kidney damage, eye damage, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and cardiovascular disease.
Dosage and Administration: Glyciphage VG2 should be taken orally, typically once or twice daily, with or immediately before meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not chewed, crushed, or broken. Consistent use at the same time each day is recommended for optimal benefits. The dosage is determined by a doctor based on the patient's condition and blood sugar levels.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, altered taste, flatulence, stomach pain, headache, skin rash, and respiratory tract infection. Some individuals may experience weight gain.
- Serious Side Effects: Severe hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis (a rare but serious condition that can damage the liver and kidneys), and bullous pemphigoid (a serious skin reaction). Symptoms of hypoglycemia include sweating, dizziness, headache, and shaking.
Precautions:
- Contraindications: Glyciphage VG2 should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver disease, acute conditions like dehydration or severe infection, severe ketosis, severe trauma, lung or heart problems, or known allergy to any of its components or other sulfonylureas/sulphonamides. It is not recommended for children under 18.
- Warnings: Consult a doctor if you have heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or G6PD deficiency. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor as it may be unsafe. Alcohol consumption should be avoided as it increases the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis. The medicine can make skin more sensitive to the sun, so sunscreen use is advisable. Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels, blood cell counts, and liver function is recommended. Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all other medications, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal tonics, and supplements. Glyciphage VG2 can interact with antihypertensives (e.g., captopril, enalapril), antianginal agents (e.g., ranolazine), anticonvulsants (e.g., phenytoin), certain antibacterials (e.g., rifampicin, ciprofloxacin), antifungals (e.g., fluconazole), other oral antidiabetics and insulin, anticancer drugs (e.g., cyclophosphamide), disopyramide, fenyramidol, NSAIDs (e.g., diclofenac, ibuprofen), anti-clot medicines (e.g., phenprocoumon), cimetidine, trimethoprim, acetazolamide, propranolol, thiazides, iodinated contrast media, gatifloxacin, and furosemide.
Storage: Store Glyciphage VG2 in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, at room temperature (between 10ºC to 30ºC, or specifically 20-25°C). Keep it out of sight and reach of children.
Frequently asked questions
Here are the most frequently asked questions about GLYCIPHAGE VG2:
What is GLYCIPHAGE VG2 used for?
GLYCIPHAGE VG2 is a combination medication used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It is prescribed when diet, exercise, and other single or two-drug anti-diabetic therapies are not sufficient to adequately control blood sugar levels. It helps prevent serious diabetes complications like kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and the risk of heart attack or stroke.
How does GLYCIPHAGE VG2 work?
GLYCIPHAGE VG2 contains three active ingredients:
- Glimepiride: This works by increasing the amount of insulin released from the pancreas.
- Metformin: This reduces the production of glucose by the liver, decreases the absorption of glucose from the intestines, and improves the body's sensitivity to insulin.
- Voglibose: This delays the digestion and absorption of complex carbohydrates from food in the intestines, thereby preventing a sharp rise in blood sugar levels after meals. Together, these actions help to effectively lower and control blood glucose levels.
What is the usual dosage for GLYCIPHAGE VG2?
The dosage of GLYCIPHAGE VG2 should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is typically taken once or twice daily with meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and not crushed or chewed. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose based on your condition and blood sugar levels.
What are the possible side effects of GLYCIPHAGE VG2?
Common side effects of GLYCIPHAGE VG2 include hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, altered taste, flatulence, and loss of appetite. Some individuals may also experience dizziness, blurred vision, or a metallic taste. Side effects often improve as your body adjusts to the medicine.
Is GLYCIPHAGE VG2 safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: GLYCIPHAGE VG2 is generally not recommended and is considered unsafe during pregnancy, as it may cause harm to the developing fetus. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, your doctor will likely review your treatment and may suggest safer alternatives like insulin. Breastfeeding: It is not recommended to breastfeed while taking GLYCIPHAGE VG2 as the medicine may pass into breast milk and could potentially lower the baby's blood sugar level. Your doctor will need to review your treatment to determine the best course of action for you and your baby.
Can GLYCIPHAGE VG2 be taken with other medications?
GLYCIPHAGE VG2 can interact with several other medications. It is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines you are currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and prescription medications. Some known interactions include those with anti-clot medicines, other diabetes medications (like insulin and pioglitazone), certain anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., diclofenac, ibuprofen), antihypertensives, antianginal agents, anticonvulsants, antibacterials, antifungals, steroids, and thyroid hormones.
What precautions should be taken while taking GLYCIPHAGE VG2?
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol during treatment with GLYCIPHAGE VG2 as it significantly increases the risk of low blood sugar and a serious condition called lactic acidosis.
- Medical Conditions: This medicine is not suitable for Type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or severe kidney or liver problems. It is also contraindicated in patients with acute metabolic acidosis, severe heart conditions, or severe infections.
- Driving: GLYCIPHAGE VG2 may cause dizziness or visual disturbances, so caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery.
- Sudden Stoppage: Do not stop taking GLYCIPHAGE VG2 abruptly without consulting your doctor, as this can lead to an increase in blood sugar levels and potential complications.
- Sun Sensitivity: This medication may make your skin more sensitive to the sun; use sunscreen if necessary.
What happens if a dose of GLYCIPHAGE VG2 is missed?
If you miss a dose of GLYCIPHAGE VG2, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
How should GLYCIPHAGE VG2 be stored?
GLYCIPHAGE VG2 should be stored in a cool and dry place, ideally below 25°C or between 20-25°C, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
