LOTEL EYE DROPS GEL

LOTEL EYE DROPS GEL is an ophthalmic medication manufactured by Ajanta Pharma Limited, primarily used to manage various inflammatory and painful eye conditions.

  • Name: Lotel Eye Drops Gel (Brand Name: Lotel Gel)

  • Composition:

    • Active Ingredient: Loteprednol Etabonate (0.5% w/v)
    • Preservative: Benzalkonium Chloride (0.003%)
  • Uses: LOTEL EYE DROPS GEL is prescribed for:

    • Managing eye conditions involving inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort due to infection or allergy.
    • Treating post-operative inflammation and pain following ocular surgery.
    • Relieving symptoms such as pain, itching, watery eyes, and soreness of the eyes.
    • Providing relief from dry eye symptoms by lubricating and moisturizing the ocular surface.
  • Dosage and Administration:

    • This medicine is for external ophthalmic use only.
    • Always wash hands thoroughly before application.
    • Shake the bottle gently before use.
    • Tilt the head back, gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Instill the prescribed number of drops into this pocket without touching the applicator tip to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
    • Close the eyes for 1-2 minutes and gently press on the inner corner of the eye (near the nose) to help prevent the medication from draining out.
    • If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 to 15 minutes between applications.
    • Remove contact lenses before applying the gel and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
    • The typical dosage guidance is as advised by a physician, often 1-2 drops into the affected eye, which may be 2 to 4 times a day, depending on the condition and doctor's instructions.
    • Do not discontinue the use of this medicine suddenly without consulting your doctor, as symptoms may worsen or return.
  • Side Effects:

    • Common Side Effects: Eye irritation, temporary blurred vision, watery eyes, foreign body sensation in the eye, burning sensation, dry eyes, eye redness, and itching.
    • Serious Side Effects (with prolonged use): Increased intraocular pressure (which can lead to glaucoma and optic nerve damage) and posterior subcapsular cataract formation.
  • Precautions:

    • Consult a doctor for the correct dosage and duration of treatment; Lotel Eye Drops Gel is not for long-term use.
    • Prolonged use can increase the risk of glaucoma and cataracts.
    • Avoid use if allergic to Loteprednol or any other ingredients in the formulation.
    • Use with caution in patients with active ocular infections (viral, fungal, or mycobacterial) as it may worsen the infection due to its immunosuppressive properties.
    • It may delay healing after cataract surgery.
    • If vision is blurred after application, avoid driving or operating machinery until vision clears.
    • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use this medicine only after consulting their doctor, as caution is advised.
    • Do not use other eye medications concurrently without a doctor's consultation.
    • For children, the use and dosage must be determined by a doctor; it may not be recommended for those under 18 years of age in some instances.
    • Regular monitoring of intraocular pressure is advised during prolonged treatment.
  • Storage:

    • Store in a closed container at room temperature, ideally below 30°C.
    • Keep away from heat, moisture, direct light, and do not freeze.
    • Keep out of reach of children.
    • Dispose of any outdated or unused medicine properly.
    • Once opened, the medicine should generally be used within 4 weeks.
Frequently asked questions

1. What is Lotel Eye Drops Gel used for?

Lotel Eye Drops Gel is primarily used to manage eye conditions involving inflammation, redness, swelling, and discomfort caused by infection or allergy. It is also prescribed for post-operative inflammation and pain following ocular surgery, and can help relieve symptoms like pain, itching, watery eyes, and soreness.

2. How does Lotel Eye Drops Gel work?

Lotel Eye Drops Gel contains Loteprednol etabonate, which is a corticosteroid. It works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers (prostaglandins) in the body that cause inflammation (redness, swelling, pain, and itching). Some formulations also include Benzalkonium chloride, an antimicrobial preservative that disrupts bacterial cell membranes, helping to prevent bacterial growth.

3. What is the usual dosage of Lotel Eye Drops Gel?

The specific dosage and frequency should always be determined by your doctor. Typically, for conditions like eye allergies, a common recommendation might be one drop into the affected eye(s) four times daily, for a duration as directed by the doctor. For post-operative inflammation and pain, some products containing loteprednol etabonate are instilled once or twice daily, or four times daily, starting 24 hours after surgery and continuing for about two weeks. It is crucial not to use more than the prescribed dose.

4. What are the possible side effects of Lotel Eye Drops Gel?

Common side effects include eye irritation, temporary blurred vision, watery eyes, a foreign body sensation in the eye, and burning sensation. More serious, though less common, side effects with prolonged use can include increased intraocular pressure (potentially leading to glaucoma) and posterior subcapsular cataract formation. If any serious side effects occur or symptoms worsen, consult your doctor.

5. Is Lotel Eye Drops Gel safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Caution is advised when using Lotel Eye Drops Gel during pregnancy. Animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and there are limited human studies. It should only be used if the potential benefit outweighs the risks, as determined by your doctor.

For breastfeeding mothers, caution is also advised. Lotel Eye Drops Gel is probably unsafe to use during breastfeeding as limited human data suggests the drug may pass into breastmilk and harm the baby. It's best to discuss this with your doctor. To minimize potential transfer, applying pressure to the inner corner of the eye for one minute after instilling the drops and removing excess solution with a tissue can help.

6. Can Lotel Eye Drops Gel be taken with other medications?

Lotel Eye Drops Gel can interact with other medications. When used concurrently with other corticosteroids (oral or topical), it may increase overall exposure to corticosteroids, potentially leading to enhanced effects or side effects. Immunosuppressants like cyclosporine might amplify the immunosuppressive effect and increase susceptibility to infections when used with Lotel Gel. It is important to wait at least 5-10 minutes before using any other eye medication to avoid dilution and to consult your doctor before combining with other eye medications.

7. What precautions should be taken while using Lotel Eye Drops Gel?

  • Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before applying the gel and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Contamination: Do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including your eye, to prevent contamination.
  • Driving/Operating Machinery: Lotel Eye Drops Gel may cause temporary blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery until your vision is clear.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of glaucoma, cataracts, or eye infections (especially viral, fungal, or mycobacterial), as prolonged use of corticosteroids can worsen these conditions, increase intraocular pressure, or delay healing.
  • Children: Lotel Gel is generally not recommended for children under 18 years of age.
  • Duration of Use: Do not use for longer than the prescribed duration without consulting your doctor, as prolonged use can lead to serious eye problems.

8. What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not double up on doses without consulting your doctor.

9. How should Lotel Eye Drops Gel be stored?

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep it from freezing and out of the reach of children. It should generally be stored below 30°C. Do not use the eye drops for more than 28 days after first opening the bottle.
