VOVERAN EMULGEL

Voveran Emulgel, manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., is a topical nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) designed for localized pain and inflammation relief.

  • Composition The active ingredient is Diclofenac Diethylamine, typically 1.16% w/w, which corresponds to 1% diclofenac sodium.

  • Uses Voveran Emulgel is prescribed to alleviate pain and inflammation associated with various musculoskeletal conditions. These include sprains, strains, bruises (contusions), post-traumatic pain, low back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, muscle pain, and joint conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and tendonitis (e.g., tennis elbow). It helps reduce swelling and stiffness, supporting overall joint and muscle health.

  • Dosage and Administration This medicine is for external use only. Apply a thin layer of the gel to the affected area 3 to 4 times daily and gently massage until fully absorbed. Do not apply on broken, diseased, infected, inflamed, irritated skin, open wounds, cuts, or scrapes. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Do not use with occlusive dressings (e.g., airtight bandages).

  • Side Effects Common side effects at the application site include itching, irritation, redness, burning sensation, skin rash, eczema, erythema, and dermatitis (including contact dermatitis). Rarely, more serious skin reactions like bullous dermatitis or pustular rash, hypersensitivity (urticaria), asthma, or photosensitivity reactions may occur. While systemic side effects are less common with topical use, they can manifest if applied over large areas for prolonged periods.

  • Precautions Voveran Emulgel is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to diclofenac, other NSAIDs, or any of its excipients. It should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy or during the perioperative period in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. Exercise caution and consult a doctor if you have kidney failure, severe heart conditions (increased risk of heart attack or stroke), asthma, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, stomach infection, existing skin rash, liver problems, bleeding disorders, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. If breastfeeding, avoid application on the breast. Avoid excessive sun exposure on treated areas.

  • Storage Store Voveran Emulgel in a cool, dry, and dark place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at a temperature below 30°C. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed and out of reach of children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Voveran Emulgel: Frequently Asked Questions

Voveran Emulgel, manufactured by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd., is a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for targeted pain relief. It contains diclofenac diethylamine, which works to reduce pain and inflammation at the application site.

What is Voveran Emulgel used for?

Voveran Emulgel is primarily used to relieve pain and inflammation associated with musculoskeletal disorders. This includes conditions such as sprains, strains, arthritis (like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis), contusions (bruises), post-traumatic pain, neck pain, back pain, and joint pain.

How does Voveran Emulgel work?

Voveran Emulgel works by delivering diclofenac diethylamine, an NSAID, directly to the affected area. Diclofenac works by blocking the effect of cyclo-oxygenase (COX) enzymes, which are responsible for producing prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemical messengers that cause pain and inflammation. By reducing prostaglandin production, Voveran Emulgel helps to alleviate mild to moderate pain and inflammation. The emulgel formulation allows the diclofenac to penetrate deeply into the skin and accumulate in the synovial tissue, providing a sustained analgesic effect.

What is the usual dosage of Voveran Emulgel?

For adults and adolescents 14 years and over, Voveran Emulgel is typically applied 3 to 4 times daily to the affected area, and gently rubbed into the skin until absorbed. A thin layer, approximately 2 to 4 grams (cherry- to walnut-sized amount), is usually sufficient to treat an area of about 400 to 800 cm². It is important not to exceed the recommended dose.

What are the possible side effects of Voveran Emulgel?

Common side effects are generally mild and local to the application site. These can include itching, irritation, redness, a burning sensation, skin rash, eczema, or contact dermatitis. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and often resolve over time. However, if side effects persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Rarely, more severe allergic reactions or blistering rashes can occur, in which case medical attention should be sought immediately. Systemic side effects are less likely with topical application due to low systemic absorption, but cannot be entirely excluded if applied to large skin areas for prolonged periods.

Is Voveran Emulgel safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Voveran Emulgel is generally not recommended during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester, as it may harm the unborn child or cause delivery complications. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks, and under a doctor's guidance.

For breastfeeding mothers, Voveran Emulgel is probably unsafe to use. While tiny amounts of diclofenac may pass into breast milk, it is generally advised to consult a doctor, and if used, to avoid applying the gel to the breast area.

Can Voveran Emulgel be taken with other medications?

While systemic absorption is low, Voveran Emulgel may interact with other medications, particularly other NSAIDs (like aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen), blood thinners, and certain medications for high blood pressure or heart conditions. It is important to inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking to avoid potential interactions, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal products. Concomitant use with other NSAIDs or anticoagulants may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding.

What precautions should be taken when using Voveran Emulgel?

  • External Use Only: Voveran Emulgel is for external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes. If accidental contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water and consult a doctor if discomfort persists.
  • Avoid Broken Skin: Do not apply the gel to open wounds, cuts, scrapes, damaged, diseased, infected, inflamed, or irritated skin. Discontinue use if a skin rash develops.
  • No Occlusive Dressings: Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings or bandages, as this may increase the risk of side effects.
  • Underlying Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have underlying medical conditions such as peptic ulcers, heart problems (including recent heart surgery), high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, bleeding problems, asthma, fluid retention, inflammatory bowel disease, or kidney or liver problems.
  • Children: Voveran Emulgel is not recommended for children under 14 years of age.
  • Sunlight: Voveran Emulgel may increase the risk of sunburn, so keep the treated area out of direct sunlight.
  • Other Topical Products: Avoid using other topical products like lotions or sunscreens on the same area, as they might affect absorption.

What happens if a dose is missed?

If you miss an application of Voveran Emulgel, apply it as soon as you remember. Then, continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply a double quantity to make up for the missed dose.

How should Voveran Emulgel be stored?

Store Voveran Emulgel in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at temperatures between 10ºC to 25ºC or below 30ºC. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiry date.
