Description

SITA OD MET 50/500 MG by MACLEODS PHARMACEUTICALS LTD.

Name: SITA OD MET 50/500 MG (Common name: Sitagliptin and Metformin combination)

Composition: Each tablet contains Sitagliptin Phosphate 50 mg and Metformin Hydrochloride 500 mg.

Uses: SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is prescribed as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is used when treatment with both sitagliptin and metformin is appropriate. Sitagliptin works by increasing the body's natural substances that lower blood sugar when it is high, while metformin reduces glucose production in the liver, delays glucose absorption from the intestines, and increases the body's sensitivity to insulin. This dual action helps to control blood sugar levels and prevent serious diabetes complications like kidney damage, nerve damage, and eye problems.

Dosage and Administration: SITA OD MET 50/500 MG tablets are taken orally, typically twice daily with meals. The dosage is individualized based on the patient's current regimen, effectiveness, and tolerability, with gradual dose escalation recommended to minimize gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. For patients not currently on metformin, a common starting dose is 50 mg sitagliptin and 500 mg metformin twice daily. The maximum recommended daily dose is 100 mg of sitagliptin and 2000 mg of metformin HCl. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not split or divided.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, weakness, metallic taste in the mouth, runny nose, sore throat, and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
  • Serious: Lactic acidosis (rare but serious, symptoms include unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain with nausea/vomiting/diarrhea, feeling cold, dizziness, irregular heartbeat), pancreatitis (severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting), severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat, difficulty breathing), bullous pemphigoid (large, hard skin blisters), and kidney problems.

Precautions:

  • Not recommended for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
  • Caution is advised in patients with kidney or liver disease, heart failure, a history of pancreatitis, or excessive alcohol use.
  • Patients should be monitored for signs of heart failure and pancreatitis.
  • Limit alcohol consumption as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia.
  • May need to be temporarily discontinued before major surgery or diagnostic tests involving iodinated contrast dye.
  • Close monitoring of blood sugar and kidney function is essential.
  • Inform your doctor about all medications being taken, especially insulin secretagogues (e.g., sulfonylureas) or insulin, as dosage adjustments may be needed to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.

Storage: Store at room temperature (20-25°C), away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing and out of reach of children.

Frequently asked questions

SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is a medication containing a combination of Sitagliptin (50 mg) and Metformin (500 mg), primarily used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It works by regulating blood sugar levels through different mechanisms.

Here are some frequently asked questions about SITA OD MET 50/500 MG:

What is SITA OD MET 50/500 MG used for?

SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is used to treat Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in adults. It helps to control high blood sugar levels by enhancing insulin release and reducing glucose production by the liver. When used alongside diet and exercise, it can help prevent serious complications of diabetes, such as kidney damage, nerve injury, blindness, and cardiovascular risks.

How does SITA OD MET 50/500 MG work?

This medicine combines two active ingredients: Sitagliptin and Metformin. Sitagliptin (50 mg) is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that increases insulin release from the pancreas and reduces glucagon secretion, which helps regulate blood sugar. Metformin (500 mg) is a biguanide that works by decreasing glucose production in the liver, reducing glucose absorption from the intestines, and enhancing the body's sensitivity to insulin. Together, these components improve blood sugar control.

What is the usual dosage for SITA OD MET 50/500 MG?

The dosage of SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is determined by your doctor based on your individual condition, kidney function, and response to treatment. It is typically taken once or twice daily with meals to help reduce gastrointestinal side effects. You should swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water and not crush or chew it.

What are the possible side effects of SITA OD MET 50/500 MG?

Common side effects may include upper respiratory tract infection, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, joint pain, weakness, flatulence, metallic taste in the mouth, sore throat, and stuffy nose. Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) is also a possible side effect, particularly if taken with other diabetes medications like insulin or sulfonylureas. Symptoms of low blood sugar include dizziness, sweating, hunger pangs, dry mouth, and rapid heartbeat. A serious but rare side effect associated with metformin is lactic acidosis, characterized by stomach discomfort, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fast breathing, muscle pain, and unusual tiredness. Pancreatitis and bullous pemphigoid (large skin blisters) have also been reported.

Is SITA OD MET 50/500 MG safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Caution is advised during pregnancy. SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is generally not recommended for pregnant women, and its components can potentially harm an unborn baby. Similarly, it is not recommended for breastfeeding women. It is crucial to discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding before starting this medication.

Can SITA OD MET 50/500 MG be taken with other medications?

SITA OD MET 50/500 MG can interact with other medications. Taking it with insulin or insulin secretagogues (e.g., glimepiride, glibenclamide) can increase the risk of low blood sugar. Diuretics (e.g., furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide) may increase the risk of lactic acidosis. Corticosteroids like prednisone may reduce its blood sugar-lowering effect. Other medications such as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, NSAIDs, and certain beta-blockers can also interact. Always inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal products you are currently taking.

What precautions should be taken while using SITA OD MET 50/500 MG?

It is important not to stop taking SITA OD MET 50/500 MG without consulting your doctor, even if your blood sugar levels improve. You should also follow a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise. Limit or avoid alcohol consumption, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis and affect blood sugar control. Inform your doctor about any pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, pancreatitis, severe infections, or dehydration. Regular monitoring of your blood sugar and kidney function may be required during treatment. This medication is not for Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis. You may need to stop the medication before major surgery or diagnostic tests involving contrast dyes.

What happens if a dose of SITA OD MET 50/500 MG is missed?

If you miss a dose of SITA OD MET 50/500 MG, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Always consult your doctor before making any changes to your dosage.

How should SITA OD MET 50/500 MG be stored?

SITA OD MET 50/500 MG should be stored at room temperature, generally not exceeding 30°C (or between 20-25°C). It is important to protect the medication from light and moisture, and it should not be stored in the bathroom. Always keep SITA OD MET 50/500 MG out of the reach of children and pets.
