Frequently asked questions

What is Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid used for?

Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid is an antacid medicine primarily used to manage symptoms associated with stomach distress, including acidity, heartburn, indigestion, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach), flatulence (gas), and stomach upset. It can also be beneficial for peptic ulcer pain.

How does Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid work?

This medicine contains a combination of active ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, Magnesium Trisilicate, and Simethicone. Calcium Carbonate, Magnesium Hydroxide, and Magnesium Trisilicate work by neutralizing excess stomach acid, which helps to relieve symptoms like heartburn and indigestion. Simethicone acts as an anti-foaming agent, reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, allowing them to combine into larger bubbles that are easier to pass and thereby relieving bloating and discomfort caused by trapped gas.

What is the usual dosage for Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid?

The recommended dosage is typically 2 teaspoonfuls (10 mL) taken ½ to 1 hour after meals and at bedtime, or as directed by a doctor. It is important to shake the bottle well before each use and to use a measuring cup or spoon for accurate dosing. Do not exceed the recommended daily dosage.

What are the possible side effects of Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid?

Common side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, weakness or tiredness, stomach cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Less common effects can include headaches, dizziness, or allergic reactions such as skin rashes, itching, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If any side effects persist or become severe, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

Is Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

It is generally recommended to consult your doctor before taking Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. While some sources suggest its use in pregnancy is generally acceptable at prescribed doses with limited human data showing no or low adverse effects on the developing baby, and it is likely safe during breastfeeding, other information indicates it is contraindicated in pregnancy and lactation. Your doctor will weigh the benefits and risks based on your specific condition.

Can Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid be taken with other medications?

Antacids, including those containing magnesium and calcium salts, can interact with the absorption of several other medications by altering gastric pH or forming complexes. These can include bisphosphonates, fluoride, fluoroquinolones, tetracyclines, ketoconazole, azithromycin, digoxin, naproxen, and dexamethasone. To minimize potential interactions, it is generally recommended to take Gastracid Liquid and any other medications 2 to 3 hours apart. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines, supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking.

What precautions should be taken while using Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid?

Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, liver problems, low phosphate levels, high magnesium levels, malabsorption, intestinal obstruction, fructose intolerance, or acute porphyria, as dosage adjustments or avoidance may be necessary. It is also advisable to avoid consuming alcohol, as it can increase acidity. Additionally, avoiding smoking, eating smaller, more frequent meals, and not lying down immediately after eating can help manage acidity symptoms.

What happens if a dose of Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid is missed?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.

How should Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid be stored?

Gastracid (Sugar Free) Liquid should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and heat sources, typically at room temperature (below 25°C or between 15-30°C). It should not be refrigerated. Always keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
