Frequently asked questions
SIZODON 4 contains Risperidone as its active ingredient. It is an atypical antipsychotic medication.
Here are some frequently asked questions about SIZODON 4 (Risperidone):
What is SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) used for?
SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) is primarily used to treat schizophrenia in adults and teenagers aged 13 and older. It is also prescribed for acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder in adults and teenagers aged 10 and older. Additionally, it can be used to manage irritability linked to autistic disorder in children aged 5 to 16 years.
How does SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) work?
SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) belongs to a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics. It works by balancing the levels of certain natural chemical messengers in the brain, specifically dopamine and serotonin. This action helps to improve mood, behavior, and thoughts.
What is the usual dosage of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone)?
The dosage of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) varies based on the condition being treated, the patient's age, and individual response. It is typically started at a low dose and gradually increased by a doctor. For adults with schizophrenia, a common starting dose is 2 mg per day, with a target range of 2-8 mg per day, not exceeding 16 mg daily. For bipolar disorder in adults, the initial dose is often 2-3 mg once daily, with a maximum of 6 mg per day. For irritability associated with autistic disorder in children (5-16 years), initial doses are usually 0.25 mg or 0.5 mg daily, adjusted based on weight.
What are the possible side effects of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone)?
Common side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, weight gain, constipation, dry mouth, headache, fatigue, insomnia, and restlessness. Some individuals may also experience elevated prolactin levels, which can lead to symptoms like breast enlargement or discharge. More serious side effects, though less common, can include tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a severe reaction with fever and muscle stiffness), high blood sugar or increased risk of diabetes, low blood pressure (causing dizziness or fainting), and seizures.
Is SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Pregnancy: Limited information is available regarding the safety of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) during pregnancy. While some studies suggest a potentially small increased risk of birth defects, others do not. If used during the third trimester, newborns may experience temporary withdrawal-like symptoms such as stiff or floppy muscles, tremors, breathing difficulties, and feeding problems. It is generally advised to discuss treatment with a doctor, weighing the benefits against potential risks, as stopping the medication may pose a greater risk to maternal health. Breastfeeding: Risperidone passes into breast milk in small amounts. While side effects are not commonly reported in breastfed infants, monitoring the baby for drowsiness, poor feeding, fussiness, or unusual movements is recommended. Some sources suggest caution or alternative medications, especially for newborns or premature infants, due to limited long-term data. The product label may advise against breastfeeding.
Can SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) be taken with other medications?
SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) can interact with many other medications, so it is crucial to inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking. It should not be taken with medications like dextromethorphan, quinidine, dronedarone, metoclopramide, pimozide, or thioridazine. Caution is advised with alcohol and other central nervous system depressants (due to increased sedation), blood pressure medications (due to increased risk of low blood pressure), and medications for Parkinson's disease like levodopa (as risperidone may reduce their effectiveness). Other interactions include certain antidepressants (e.g., fluoxetine, paroxetine) and anti-seizure medications (e.g., carbamazepine), which can affect risperidone levels in the body.
What precautions should be taken while taking SIZODON 4 (Risperidone)?
Regular medical check-ups and blood tests (to monitor blood sugar, cholesterol, and prolactin levels) are important. You should avoid sudden changes in position to prevent dizziness or fainting, and be cautious in extreme temperatures as this medication can affect your body's ability to regulate temperature. Do not consume alcohol while on this medication. SIZODON 4 can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how it affects you. It is not recommended for behavioral problems in older adults with dementia due to an increased risk of death and stroke.
What happens if a dose of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) is missed?
If you miss a dose of SIZODON 4 (Risperidone), take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you miss multiple doses, contact your doctor for advice.
How should SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) be stored?
SIZODON 4 (Risperidone) tablets and oral solution should be stored at room temperature, typically between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F). It should be kept away from excessive heat, moisture, and direct light. Protect it from freezing and keep it out of the reach of children.
