Description
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET (3 TAB)
Name
- Brand Name: Idrofos 150 Tablet
- Common Name: Ibandronic Acid Tablet
Composition
- Active Ingredient: Ibandronic Acid (150 mg)
Uses Idrofos 150 Tablet is primarily used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in women after menopause. It strengthens bones by inhibiting osteoclasts, cells responsible for bone breakdown, thereby reducing bone loss and increasing bone density. This action helps to lower the risk of fractures. It may also be used to prevent bone complications in patients with breast cancer that has spread to the bones and to manage hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels) in some cases.
Dosage and Administration Typically, one Idrofos 150 mg tablet is taken once a month, preferably on the same date each month. It should be taken first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before the first food, drink (other than plain water), or any other oral medication or supplement (including calcium). Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of plain water (180-240 ml) while sitting or standing upright. Do not chew, crush, or suck the tablet. Patients should not lie down for at least 60 minutes after taking the medicine. If a dose is missed, take it the morning after it is remembered, unless the next scheduled dose is within 7 days. If the next dose is within 7 days, wait for the next scheduled dose; do not take two 150 mg tablets within the same week.
Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, joint pain, flu-like symptoms, indigestion, heartburn, muscle pain, back pain, and dizziness.
- Serious Side Effects: Severe pain in the chest or after swallowing, severe nausea or vomiting, difficulty swallowing, severe inflammation or sores in the food pipe, persistent eye pain, new pain or weakness in the thigh, hip, or groin (potential unusual fracture), and hypocalcemia (low calcium levels in the blood).
Precautions
- Allergies: Do not take if allergic to ibandronic acid or any components of the tablet.
- Kidney Problems: Use with caution in patients with severe kidney problems.
- Hypocalcemia: Low blood calcium levels must be corrected before starting treatment.
- Gastrointestinal Disorders: Exercise caution with conditions like Barrett's esophagus, dysphagia, or peptic ulcers, as they may increase the risk of esophageal irritation.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy and generally advised to avoid while breastfeeding.
- Interactions:
- Food/Drinks: Should be taken on an empty stomach. Food, especially dairy products and calcium-rich foods, significantly reduces absorption.
- Medications: Avoid taking antacids, calcium supplements, or other mineral supplements for at least 60 minutes after Idrofos 150 Tablet. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines (NSAIDs) may increase the risk of stomach irritation. Corticosteroids may increase the risk of bone loss.
- Osteonecrosis of the Jaw: Poor dental health can increase the risk of jawbone problems.
Storage Store in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture, at a temperature below 30°C. Keep out of reach and sight of children.
Frequently asked questions
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET contains Ibandronic acid, a bisphosphonate medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis. It is primarily prescribed for postmenopausal women to strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fractures.
Here are some frequently asked questions about IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET:
What is IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET used for?
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in women who have undergone menopause. It helps to strengthen bones, increase bone density, and reduce the risk of bone fractures. It may also be used to prevent bone complications in patients with breast cancer that has spread to the bones and to treat hypercalcemia (elevated blood calcium levels).
How does IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET work?
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET contains Ibandronic acid, which belongs to a class of medicines called bisphosphonates. It works by inhibiting the activity of osteoclasts, which are cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue (bone resorption). By slowing down bone breakdown, it helps maintain bone density, allows bone-building cells to work more effectively, and ultimately strengthens bones.
What is the usual dosage for IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET?
The recommended dosage for IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET is one 150 mg tablet taken once a month, preferably on the same date each month. It should be taken in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before the first food or drink (other than plain water), or any other oral medication or supplement (including calcium). The tablet should be swallowed whole with a full glass of plain water (180 to 240 ml) while sitting or standing upright. Patients should not lie down for at least 60 minutes after taking the tablet to prevent esophageal irritation.
What are the possible side effects of IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET?
Common side effects can include headache, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, and musculoskeletal (bone, muscle, or joint) pain. Some serious side effects, though less common, can include kidney problems, low levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia), and pain in the mouth or jaw (osteonecrosis of the jaw). If you experience severe chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or severe nausea/vomiting, seek immediate medical attention.
Is IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use during pregnancy as animal studies have shown harmful effects on the developing baby, and there are limited human studies. It should also be avoided by breastfeeding women as it is not known if it passes into breast milk and could affect the baby. It's crucial to consult your doctor for safer alternatives if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET be taken with other medications?
It is likely that calcium supplements, antacids, and other oral medications containing multivalent cations (such as aluminum, magnesium, or iron) can interfere with the absorption of IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET, making it less effective. Therefore, you must wait at least 60 minutes after taking IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET before taking any other oral medications or supplements. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen or aspirin, and corticosteroids, should be used with caution as they may increase the risk of stomach irritation or bone loss. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.
What precautions should be taken when using IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET?
Before starting IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET, any existing low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia) or other disturbances of bone and mineral metabolism must be corrected. It is contraindicated in patients with abnormalities of the esophagus that delay emptying (e.g., stricture or achalasia) or those unable to sit or stand upright for at least 60 minutes after taking the tablet. Caution is advised for patients with kidney problems, active upper gastrointestinal issues (like ulcers or gastritis), or poor dental health, as it may increase the risk of jawbone problems. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is important, often through supplements. Avoid consuming mineral water with the tablet as it may have high calcium content. Limiting or avoiding alcohol and quitting smoking can also improve bone health.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a once-monthly dose of IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET, take it the morning after you remember, unless your next scheduled dose is within 7 days. If the next scheduled dose is within 7 days, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular monthly schedule. Do not take two 150 mg tablets within the same week.
How should IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET be stored?
IDROFOS 150 MG TABLET should be stored in a cool and dry place, below 30°C, and protected from moisture and heat. Keep it out of reach and sight of children.
