Description
PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML
PULMOSMART PULMULES is a combination medication used to manage long-term respiratory conditions. It is manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd. - Pulmocare Division.
-
Composition PULMOSMART PULMULES contains two active ingredients:
- Formoterol (20mcg/2ml): A long-acting bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the airways, widening them and making breathing easier.
- Budesonide (0.5mg/2ml or 1mg/2ml): A corticosteroid that reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways by stopping the release of chemical messengers that cause inflammation.
-
Uses PULMOSMART PULMULES is prescribed for the maintenance treatment of obstructive airway diseases, including:
- Asthma: It helps prevent the onset of asthma attacks and controls symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness.
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): It helps keep airways open, relieving symptoms such as tightness in the chest, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, making daily activities easier. This medicine is for long-term control and does not relieve sudden, acute symptoms; a rescue inhaler should be used for such instances.
-
Dosage and Administration PULMOSMART PULMULES is for inhalational use only and is typically administered via a nebuliser.
- Gently shake the respule before use.
- Twist open the top of the respule and pour the entire contents into the nebuliser reservoir.
- Breathe normally through the mouthpiece or mask until the medicine is finished.
- Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after each use to help prevent fungal infections. Do not swallow the rinsing liquid. The exact dose and duration should be determined by a doctor, based on individual factors like age, body weight, and severity of the condition. Do not discontinue use without medical advice.
-
Side Effects Common side effects may include:
- Headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, and dizziness.
- Cough, nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the throat and nasal passages), upper respiratory tract infection, sinus inflammation.
- Oral thrush (fungal infection in the mouth/throat), voice change, pharyngolaryngeal pain.
- Tremors, palpitations, increased heart rate, shaking, muscle cramps.
- Influenza, back pain, blurred vision, difficulty sleeping, changes in taste, dry mouth, and throat irritation. Most side effects are usually mild and self-resolving. Rinsing the mouth after use can prevent oral thrush.
-
Precautions
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Caution is advised. Consult a doctor as safety data is limited, and some sources recommend use only if necessary. While some sources say it is generally considered safe during pregnancy or probably safe during breastfeeding when prescribed by an expert, others advise caution or state it's contraindicated unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
- Alcohol: Avoid consuming alcohol with Pulmosmart Pulmules.
- Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver diseases, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid problems, osteoporosis, immune disorders, or eye problems like glaucoma or cataracts.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially antifungals (ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole), antibiotics (clarithromycin, telithromycin), antidepressants (nefazodone, tricyclic antidepressants, MAO inhibitors), HIV protease inhibitors (indinavir, ritonavir), beta-blockers, and diuretics.
- Not recommended for children below 6 years of age.
-
Storage Store PULMOSMART PULMULES in its original container, tightly closed, and follow the storage instructions on the label. It is generally recommended to store it in a refrigerator (2 - 8°C) and not to freeze it. Dispose of unused medicine safely.
Frequently asked questions
PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML (by ALKEM LAB-PULMOCARE DIV) is a medication primarily used for the long-term management of respiratory conditions. It contains a combination of two active ingredients: Budesonide and Formoterol.
What is PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML used for?
PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML is used for the long-term management and prevention of symptoms associated with asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in adults and children over 6 years. It helps alleviate symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. This medication is not for immediate relief of sudden breathing difficulties.
How does PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML work?
This medication combines two active ingredients: Formoterol and Budesonide. Formoterol is a long-acting bronchodilator that works by relaxing the muscles in the airways, helping to widen them and make breathing easier. Budesonide is a corticosteroid (steroid) that reduces inflammation and irritation in the airways by stopping the release of chemical messengers that cause swelling. Together, they improve airflow and manage respiratory symptoms.
What is the usual dosage?
The dosage of PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML should be followed exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is typically administered via a nebulizer. Your doctor will determine how often you need to use it. It's crucial to use this medicine regularly for it to be effective, even if you don't have symptoms, and not to stop unless advised by your doctor.
What are the possible side effects?
Common side effects may include headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, respiratory tract infection, cough, sore throat, and oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth/throat). Other reported side effects include tremors, palpitations, voice changes, and dizziness. Rinsing your mouth and gargling with water or brushing your teeth after each use can help prevent oral thrush. If any side effects persist or worsen, consult your doctor.
Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Using PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML during pregnancy or breastfeeding requires caution. While some sources suggest it is generally considered safe if prescribed, others advise consulting your doctor, as there may be limited human studies or potential risks. Your doctor will weigh the benefits against potential risks to the baby before prescribing it.
Can it be taken with other medications?
PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML can interact with certain medications. Inform your doctor about all medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking. Particular care should be taken if you are on strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir), beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol), tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline), or certain diuretics.
What precautions should be taken?
This medicine is not for relieving sudden shortness of breath; always use a separate rescue inhaler for acute attacks. Inform your doctor if you have any pre-existing conditions such as kidney or liver diseases, heart problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, eye conditions (like glaucoma or cataracts), or any active infections (e.g., fungal, viral, bacterial). Avoid consuming alcohol with this medication.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If you miss a dose of PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
How should it be stored?
Store PULMOSMART PULMULES 2ML in its original container, tightly closed, and according to the instructions provided on the pack or label. Keep it in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, and out of the sight and reach of children and pets.
