Description
SUMO L DROPS
SUMO L DROPS is an oral suspension manufactured by Alkem Laboratories Ltd., primarily used as an analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer) for children.
Composition
SUMO L DROPS contain Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) at a concentration of 100 mg/mL.
Uses
This medicine is commonly prescribed to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce fever in children. It is effective in treating conditions such as headaches, toothaches, body aches, sore throats, earaches, and fever associated with the common cold and flu. It also helps with post-immunization pyrexia in neonates and infants.
Dosage and Administration
SUMO L DROPS are administered orally, preferably at a fixed time each day. While it can be taken with or without food, it is best given after food to prevent stomach irritation. The dosage and duration depend on the child's age, body weight, and the severity of the condition, and should strictly follow the doctor's prescription. Generally, a dose of 15mg/kg per dose is recommended, with a maximum of four doses in a 24-hour period and a minimum dosing interval of 4 hours. Do not exceed the prescribed dose to avoid dangerous side effects. If a child vomits within 30 minutes of administration, the same dose can be repeated after they calm down; however, redosing is not recommended if vomiting occurs more than 30 minutes after the dose.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious, but rare, side effects can include liver damage, allergic reactions, and Steven-Johnson syndrome. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms like skin rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, or breathing difficulty occur.
Precautions
SUMO L DROPS should be used with caution in children with malnutrition, G6PD deficiency, or liver or kidney disease, as dose adjustments may be necessary or the medicine might not be suitable. It is crucial not to administer SUMO L DROPS with other medicines containing paracetamol to avoid overdose and potential liver damage. Inform the doctor about any existing medical conditions or other medications being taken. Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment, especially for adults, as it can increase the risk of liver damage.
Storage
Store SUMO L DROPS in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat, and moisture. Keep the medicine out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine beyond its expiry date or if any particles are floating in it.
Frequently asked questions
SUMO L DROPS by Alkem Laboratories Ltd. are a commonly prescribed medication primarily used for pain relief and fever reduction in children. It contains Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) as its active ingredient.
Here are some frequently asked questions about SUMO L DROPS:
What are SUMO L DROPS used for?
SUMO L DROPS are used to relieve mild to moderate pain and reduce high body temperature (fever) in children. This includes pain associated with headaches, toothaches, body aches, muscle aches, sore throats, and fever often accompanying conditions like the common cold and flu.
How do SUMO L DROPS work?
SUMO L DROPS contain Paracetamol (Acetaminophen), which works by blocking the production of certain chemical messengers in the brain called prostaglandins. These prostaglandins are responsible for transmitting pain signals and causing fever. By inhibiting their production, Paracetamol helps to increase the pain threshold and regulate the body's temperature.
What is the usual dosage for SUMO L DROPS?
The dosage of SUMO L DROPS depends on the child's age, body weight, and the severity of their condition. It is crucial to follow the dose and duration precisely as prescribed by a doctor. Generally, the recommended dosage of Paracetamol for children is 10-15 mg/kg per dose, given every 4 to 6 hours. A child should not receive more than four doses in a 24-hour period, and there should be at least a 4-hour gap between doses.
What are the possible side effects of SUMO L DROPS?
While SUMO L DROPS are generally well-tolerated, some children may experience temporary and mild side effects. These can include stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and abdominal discomfort. More serious, but rare, side effects can include blood disorders (like thrombocytopenia) or, with prolonged use or overdose, liver damage (hepatotoxicity) or kidney damage. If side effects persist or worsen, consult a doctor.
Are SUMO L DROPS safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
SUMO L DROPS are primarily intended for pediatric use. However, paracetamol, the active ingredient, is often considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when used at recommended dosages. Epidemiological studies in human pregnancy have shown no ill effects when paracetamol is used as advised, and it is excreted in breast milk in clinically insignificant amounts, generally not contraindicating breastfeeding. Nonetheless, individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding should always consult their doctor before using any medication.
Can SUMO L DROPS be taken with other medications?
It is crucial to inform your doctor about all other medications your child is taking, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, and vitamins. Avoid giving SUMO L DROPS along with other medicines that also contain paracetamol (many cold and flu medicines and other painkillers), as this can lead to an overdose and potentially dangerous side effects such as liver damage. The absorption of Paracetamol may be affected by certain medications like metoclopramide, domperidone, or colestyramine. Regular, prolonged use of Paracetamol can also enhance the effect of blood thinners like warfarin.
What precautions should be taken when using SUMO L DROPS?
Care should be taken when administering SUMO L DROPS to children with severe kidney or liver impairment, malnutrition, or G6PD deficiency. Do not exceed the prescribed dose, as an overdose can lead to serious liver damage. Always use the measuring dropper or cup provided with the pack to ensure accurate dosing. Avoid alcohol consumption with paracetamol-containing products due to the increased risk of liver damage.
What happens if a dose is missed?
If a dose of SUMO L DROPS is missed, administer it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one, as this can be dangerous.
How should SUMO L DROPS be stored?
SUMO L DROPS should be stored below 25°C or 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and in a tightly closed container. Keep all medicines out of the reach and sight of children.
