Frequently asked questions
What is Leeds Syrup used for?
Leeds Syrup is primarily used to treat various allergic conditions in children, including hay fever (allergic rhinitis), allergic skin conditions like dermatitis and urticaria, and asthma. It helps alleviate symptoms such as sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy eyes, inflammation, and coughing due to allergies.
How does Leeds Syrup work?
Leeds Syrup contains a combination of Levocetirizine and Montelukast. Levocetirizine is an antiallergic that blocks histamine, a chemical messenger responsible for symptoms like runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. Montelukast is a leukotriene antagonist that blocks another chemical messenger (leukotriene), reducing inflammation and swelling in the airways and nose, thereby improving symptoms.
What is the usual dosage for Leeds Syrup?
The dosage of Leeds Syrup varies by age and should be taken as advised by a doctor. For children aged 6 to 11 years, the usual dose is 5 ml once a day in the evening, not exceeding 5 ml in 24 hours. For children aged 2 to 5 years, it's typically 2.5 ml once a day in the evening, not exceeding 2.5 ml in 24 hours. For children younger than 2 years, the use and dose should be strictly as directed by a physician. It can be given with or without food, preferably at a fixed time.
What are the possible side effects of Leeds Syrup?
Common and temporary side effects may include vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, rash, headache, fatigue, and sleepiness. In some cases, abdominal pain, increased liver enzymes, sore throat, or upper respiratory tract infection have been reported. If these effects persist or worsen, a doctor should be consulted.
Is Leeds Syrup safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Leeds Syrup is generally considered safe during pregnancy, with animal studies showing low or no adverse effects, though human studies are limited. It is probably safe to use during breastfeeding, as limited human data suggests it does not pose a significant risk to the baby. However, it is always best to consult a doctor before using any medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Can Leeds Syrup be taken with other medications?
It is important to inform your doctor about all medicines your child is currently taking, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and herbal supplements, to avoid potential interactions. Leeds Syrup should not be combined with other cold and flu medicines as this may lead to double dosing of active ingredients and serious side effects. Levocetirizine, one of its components, may increase the sedative effects of medications like sedatives, hypnotics, opioid pain medications, and CNS depressants, leading to increased drowsiness.
What precautions should be taken when using Leeds Syrup?
Precautions include:
- Inform the doctor about any history of allergies, heart problems, blood disorders, liver impairment, or kidney malfunction.
- Use with caution in patients with kidney disease, and it is not recommended for those with severe kidney disease.
- Avoid giving to children allergic to any components of the syrup.
- Be aware that it may cause dizziness and sleepiness; hence, caution is advised if the child is involved in activities requiring alertness.
- Some studies indicate it can cause mood disorders; consult a doctor if your child has a mood disorder.
- It is used to prevent asthma attacks, not to stop an attack that has already started.
What happens if a dose of Leeds Syrup is missed?
If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as it is remembered, unless it's almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
How should Leeds Syrup be stored?
Leeds Syrup should be stored at room temperature in a cool and dry place, away from direct heat and light. It should always be kept out of the reach and sight of children to prevent accidental intake.
